Technical Direction Company (TDC) provides the perfect video backdrop for 27th ARIA Awards

Video display experts, Technical Direction Company (TDC) supplied all video technology elements for the 27th ARIA Awards held at The Star, Sydney, Australia on 1 December 2013.

The ARIA Awards are the official awards of the Australian Record Industry Association attended by an audience of over 4,000. The event was broadcast live on Channel 9’s “GO!” with performances from many Australian artists including Birds of Tokyo, Bliss n Eso and Tame Impala as well as special guest appearances from Alicia Keys and Lorde.

The ceremony was produced by Michael Long and Vicki Gerrans. Set design was by Kim Buddee. Stunning screen graphics were produced and operated by Rod Morris.

TDC supplied custom automated rolling screens with ultra-bright 26K HD projectors, that not only provided a uniform, succinct and clean look according to the set design but also acted as a mask for set changeovers. TDC also supplied 200 square metres of high-resolution LED video display as well as video projections and creative and scenic LED elements along with switching, control and technical crew.

ARIA Event Producer, Michael Long said: “We’ve worked with TDC for a number of years because they have quality product, they always deliver on time and within budget meeting our set designer needs and music act requirements. TDC has an excellent logistical and creative team that can cope well with any last minute changes.

“For the Birds of Tokyo, Tame Impala, Jessica Mauboy performances and various DJ’s we used all 4 LED screens on stage along with two side screens. We created a specific look for act changeover where TDC’s two large projection screens came down and covered the stage. Because the venue didn’t have the ceiling height, we had to think of something different and thankfully TDC had some special screens available. TDC suggested early on that we use 6×6 metre screens with custom-built truss to roll them in and out creating a seamless image and transition.”

We were able to utilize some of our highest resolution LED stock for the 27th ARIA Awards which created the perfect backdrop to the Australian and international music performances.”

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Announces Availability of Vi Version 4.8 Software for Vi2, Vi4 and Vi6 Consoles

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom – HARMAN’s Soundcraft today announces the launch of its Vi Version 4.8 software—a substantial new update for Soundcraft Vi1, Vi2, 4 and 6 consoles. Version 4.8 software contains a number of significant new features, with stage monitor applications in particular set to benefit most from the update.. Some of the new features may require the purchase of additional DSP cards for Vi1, Vi2, 4 and 6 consoles.

The most significant of the new features is the upgrade of the bussing system on Vi1, Vi2, 4 and 6 to allow all 32 of the console’s mix busses to work in stereo mode when required—without stealing any other busses–to allow use as in-ear mixes. In addition, a new source selection switch has been implemented that allows each individual aux or group bus send from channels to be sourced from four different points in the signal path—post-fade, post-EQ & Dynamics, pre-Dynamics but post-EQ, and pre-EQ & Dynamics (existing software only allows the first two of these points to be selected). Other features include stereo mode for Matrix busses (including up to eight stereo Matrices on the Vi1), post-fade insert points for automixer insertion on Vi2, 4 and 6, and coloured channel label backgrounds. A new enhanced Aux VCA system allows monitor engineers to selectively use VCA mixing within a monitor mix.

In order to benefit from the new audio features, Vi1, Vi2, 4 and 6 consoles must have at least three DSP cards fitted to the Local Rack. Consoles with only two DSP cards fitted will require the purchase of a third DSP card in order to benefit from the new audio features and in this case will need to choose using an ‘Expansion Mode’ switch between 96 inputs and the old bussing system, or 64 inputs with the new bussing system. In order to have both 96 inputs and the new audio features, a fourth DSP card will need to be purchased.

Vi1 consoles will not receive the ‘All Busses can be mono or stereo’ feature, pre-fade Aux send options or post-fade insert point features, due to DSP restrictions.
A new Contribution Pan function allows each of the Matrix contribution signals, selectable from a multitude of sources including channel direct outs, bus and master outs and direct I/O patches, to be positioned within the Matrix bus’s stereo field.

Also for Vi1 consoles, V4.8 software allows increased flexibility of the Local I/O configuration, so for example one of the line out modules may be exchanged for a third Mic/line input module, giving a total of 48 mic ins and 16 line outs on the back of the console.

For all Vi consoles, it is now possible to select a bus mix as the external key input source for the Gate/Ducker on input channels. This allows more flexibility particularly when using the ducker to control ambient mics for a recording or in-ear monitor mix.

In the works for more than two years — and released last September — the new standard defines a method to assess video image quality through a series of performance based tests that are conducted on production digital cameras.

Cameras are rated (on a scale of 0 thru 100) on the following parameters: image resolution; distortion; relative illumination; dynamic range; maximum frame rate; gray level; sensitivity; bad pixel count and veiling glare.

Melchin to Share Expert Insight on Benefits of Building Information Modeling

Prism Sound’s Titan Is An Instant Hit With Supa Dups

Grammy Award winning producer and DJ, Supa Dups, has just added a Prism Sound Titan USB multitrack audio interface to his equipment roster, complimenting the Prism Sound Lyra 2 audio interface that is already an integral part of his studio set up.

Supa Dups, who began DJ-ing at the age of 11 and producing at 16, has worked with some of the biggest names in the music business. A member of the influential Black Chiney Sound System, a nod to his Chinese Jamaican heritage, Supa Dups’ breakthrough came in 2004 when he produced Nina Sky’s Turnin’ Me On. He is now one of the most sought after writer/producers around and has worked with numerous artists including Eminem (one track on the Grammy Award winning ‘Recovery’), Mary J Blige, John Legend and Bruno Mars.

“Prism Sound is the Rolls-Royce of converters and there’s nothing else that sounds like it,” he says of his kit. “There is other equipment and then there’s Prism Sound. In fact, the Lyra 2 is my mobile rig now.”

Although he is exceptionally busy, Supa Dups prefers not to name the artists he’s currently working with because not everything recorded in his studio always sees the light of day. But he is very keen to talk about his Prism Sound converters – Titan, which he only recently took delivery of and Lyra 2, which he uses all the time.

“I haven’t had a lot of time to play with Titan yet, but I keep having excellent experiences with Lyra,” he says. “The other day I was working with a band and plugged the guitar and bass into it at the same time and used it right there on the spot. It sounded excellent. We finished everything on it, even the demo vocal. Basically it has become the centrepiece of the studio. Everything about it is awesome.”

Supa Dups spends a lot of time working out of Circle House studios in Miami, and credits the city with having a fantastically diverse music scene.

“It’s like London minus the dub-step, but with an additional overall Caribbean influence which collides with the American sounds. It’s definitely got a style all of its own,” he says.

Proving he’s a man of much versatility, Supa Dups recently finished an entire live reggae album. “I didn’t know I could do that,” he says. “It was a challenge for me but I’d definitely like to be involved in more entire projects in the future and writing classic albums that people will be listening to in decades to come.”

And the Lyra 2 and his new Titan will be with him every step of the way. “There is a lot more to explore with them,” he says. “I’ve used the Lyra 2 for hours and hours and technically I’m not sure I’ve broken the back of it yet. There’s still a lot to learn and play with, but it always sounds awesome.”

The front access system is designed to take advantage of the Christie Entero HB systems’ User and Web Interface to enable remote control release of the screen for front service access as well as remotely performing fine geometry alignment by the integrated 6-axis geometry alignment system. Screen and geometry control are provided via the remote control, computer or tablet. The screen is on a slide mechanism and opens up with reliable and consistent positioning, via remote activation of solenoids, providing full access to the internal electronics from the front of the cube array system, allowing for exceptionally quick servicing and minimal downtime during maintenance operations.

Christie’s front access system with motorized six-axis adjuster provides precise alterations for perfect image quality. To access system internals, the installer simply engages the intuitive user interface on the chosen device -PC, tablet or even smart phone, and the system pops the screen away from the cube body, allowing the installer to easily move the screen out of the way for full front access. The internal electronics module has been adjusted to make the LED display viewable from the front. Since no space is required behind the display wall cube, it makes them ideal for control room environments where space is restricted.
