Belkin Receives EAL 4+ Certification for DVI-I KVM and Secure KM Product Portfolio

Belkin’s Award-Winning KVM Switches Receive Common Criteria Certificate, Providing Government Buyers with Assurance Based on Stringent Computer Security Requirements

PLAYA VISTA, CA – Belkin, a trusted leader of technology solutions for office, classroom, IT infrastructure, and mobile environments, today announced that the company has received Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4+ certification for its DVI-I KVM and Secure KM products. Designed to meet the strict requirements of government agencies, the keyboard/video/mouse switches feature the award-winning secure technology of true data path isolation between systems and networks, the hallmark of Belkin’s Advanced Secure KVM product family.

Common Criteria lists seven levels, with EAL 1 as the most basic, and EAL 7 the most stringent. Each EAL corresponds to a package of security assurance requirements, which covers the complete development of a product, with a given level of strictness and control. This Common Criteria certification is globally known as the international standard (ISO/IEC 15408) for computer security certification.

In the U.S., the highest level achievable for Secure KVM is EAL 2. However, Belkin was able to receive certification through Canadian protocol, which tests to EAL 4+. Certification was awarded by the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC).

The CSEC’s Certification Report stated: “The results documented in the Evaluation Technical Report (ETR) for this product provide sufficient evidence that it meets the EAL 4 augmented assurance requirements for the evaluated security functionality.” The report also noted that by awarding a Common Criteria certificate, the Canadian Common Criteria Evaluation and Certification Scheme (CCS) asserts that the evaluated products comply with the security requirements specified in the associated security target.

“Common Criteria ensures that the process of specification, implementation, and evaluation of a computer security product has been conducted in a rigorous, standard, and repeatable manner,” said Luis Artiz, director of product management, Business Division, Belkin International. “Receiving EAL 4+ certification assures our government buyers that they can continue to place a high level of confidence in Belkin’s KVM security features based on the quality assurance process.”

Belkin’s DVI-I KVM switches provide true data path isolation for government workstations in a highly secure environment. The switches can be used to securely connect peripheral devices, including audio equipment and large high-resolution displays, and to switch quickly among multiple PCs and networks with a single keyboard, monitor, mouse, and common access card reader.

The Secure KM Switch portfolio offers users secure switching between isolated networks with simple mouse pointer movement. The switches feature single, unbuffered, dedicated processors for each peripheral port, which allow analysts to work simultaneously on multiple networks at different security levels.

HARMAN Professional Introduces JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ Version 1.6

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN Professional today announced the latest update to its patented, award-winning live sound system configuration and control application software, JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™. Version 1.6 features improved group muting controls and a new library cleanup tool, along with several other updates including the ability to save files with EQ in Line Array Calculator Tapering/Shading mode and open them in multiple arrays.

JBL HiQnet Performance Manager offers reduced design time, simplified networking, and automated control interface configuration in a true workflow-based user experience for live performance installation professionals. Offered in version 1.6 is the new I-Tech 4×3500 HD firmware version 1042, a critical update for front display operation, a new array and ground stack Auto Amplify button to help guide automatic amplification of loudspeakers, and Group Muting and Signal Generator controls are now available in Test System mode. When selecting groups within the Group list, the affected loudspeakers are now highlighted in the main workspace to aid navigation.

In addition, each Array or Ground Stack now has its own mute button to facilitate left/right testing, time alignment and tuning, as well as the ability to amplify speaker groups from the Configure Array dialog. Overall subwoofer array delay is now completely separate from individual subwoofer electronic delay steering (EDS) delays and the delay panels now show these as two separate values. This new feature allows for more sophisticated low frequency steering for either cardioid or front-firing subwoofer arrays while providing a convenient interface for global system time alignment.

The updated version also provides users with a new library cleanup tool, which helps to eliminate the accumulation of inadvertently large files for archived Custom Racks and Generic Speakers. A new “Clean” button has been added to both the Add Speakers and Add Amplifiers modes to remove custom racks and generic loudspeakers not in the current file from the disk library, as well as the file itself.

“JBL HiQnet Performance Manager version 1.6 further proves our commitment to providing the most complete and useful live sound system configuration and control tool,” said Paul Bauman, Associate Director – Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “Our customers want to be able to tweak every aspect of the sound design to optimize performance for the specific requirements of any venue and show. DPA Microphones Takes its Final Leap into the d:ep End

Company renames remaining mics in collection to reflect the popular ‘d:’ branding

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 18, 2013 – DPA Microphones is delighted to announce at the 135th International AES Convention (Booth 2551) that its 4060, 4080 and 4090 Miniature and 5100, 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A Surround Microphones will be joining the ‘d:’ family of names. Building off the success of the company’s new “d:” branding, the current 4060, 4080 and 4090 Miniature Mics now fall into the d:screet™ Miniature Microphones group and the Five-channel surround solutions are henceforth known as the d:mension™ Surround Microphones.

DPA has also chosen to add the ever-popular 4066 and 4088 Miniature Headsets under the d:fine™ Headset Microphone category, and the mics will also receive an upgrade to coincide with the existing d:fines. Additionally, it’s new d:dicate™ Recording Microphone line combines the company’s best new and existing capsules and preamplifiers from the previous Reference Standard series.

“A few years ago, we decided to change the names of our new products to make them more recognizable and easy to remember,” says Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones. “In the past, our products were branded with numbers, which were difficult to understand and remember unless you were a DPA aficionado. We wanted names that were more meaningful and more interesting. After some brainstorming, we decided on the ‘d:’ (colon) names. Starting with a ‘d’ made it easier to remember as it connects the mics to the DPA name, and leaving out the second letter gave it a graphic element that worked well with our new DPA design.”

Announced at DPA Microphones’ recent Partner Conference at the DPA Microphones Denmark headquarters, the unveiling of the new d:screet Miniature Microphone and d:mension Surround Microphone names is another step in the company’s plans for full “d:” branding. Each product category has been carefully planned out by the DPA Microphones team.

With the company’s 5100, 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A Surround Microphone now grouped together under the d:mension Surround Microphone line, customers can easily swap between capsules and boom options. Comprised of the 4080 Miniature Cardioid Lavalier, as well as the 4060 and 4090 Omnidirectional Hi-Sens Microphones, the d:screet line also includes the company’s new 4098 Podium Microphones announced earlier this year.

“We found words starting with the letter ‘d’ that fit the significance to the product line,” continues Poulsen. “For instance, people are devoted to their instrument and to their sound, therefore our d:vote Instrument Microphones. The d:fine name was selected as we felt the microphone would define a new generation of headsets. The d:facto because the mic sets a new standard within vocal microphones and d:dicate for people who are dedicated to superior sound. Each name was introduced as there was significant updates within each product group.”

Now known as the DPA d:mension Surround Microphone, the 5100 is a compact microphone that provides users with ease of use and stunning sound quality. It is ideal for bringing truly engaging surround ambience to sport events, documentaries and other applications that especially require HDTV production. The d:mension 5006A, 5006-11A and 5015A are complete Surround Kits with five carefully factory-matched d:dicate microphones. The 5006A kit features d:dicate 4006A omni mics exclusively, while the 5006-11A is made up of a combination of the 4006A omni and 4011A cardioids mics and the 5015A is comprised of the 4015 wide cardioids.

Originally designed for use with wireless systems in theater, television and close-miked instrument applications, the d:screet 4060 capsule is highly unobtrusive, which lends itself to an exceedingly accurate omnidirectional pattern. Also a member of the d:screet family, the d:screet 4080 is well suited for broadcast, conference and other live performances in the studio or in the field. It is acoustically pre-equalized, which makes the voice more distinguishable and improves speech intelligibility.

The DPA d:screet 4090 is a high-quality omnidirectional condenser microphone with a uniquely natural and open sound, that is suitable for instrument miking applications in the studio or on the stage. Due to its remarkably linear frequency response in the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range, sound system engineers can also use the 4090 for sound system alignment, testing and tuning.

Additionally, the 4066 and 4088 Headset Microphones are being absorbed into the d:fine category while the company’s existing Reference Standard Microphones, new modular MMC4018 Supercardioid Capsule and well-known MMC4007 High-SPL Omnidirectional Capsule are now in the d:dicate line.

ABOUT DPA:

DPA’s ultimate goal is to always provide its customers with the absolute finest possible microphone solutions for all its markets, which include live sound, installation, recording, theatre and broadcast. Christie’s Premium Cinema Solutions Wow ShowEast Audiences with 4K Laser Projector, Christie Duo, Christie Vive Audio and Professional Services

Christie® today announced its ShowEast presence, reinforcing its position as the industry-leading, one-stop shop for all manner of exhibitors – art houses, multiplexes, drive-in and custom cinemas. All these exhibitors across the world turn to Christie when sourcing impressive technologies and unparalleled support and services with which to immerse their audiences in a premium cinema experience.

Complete Christie Vive Audio System

“Christie is the perfect choice for all their cinema needs, including projection and audio solutions, lobby displays and professional services,” said Craig Sholder, vice president of Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “Specific to ShowEast, of which we are a sponsor, exhibitors who were not able to take in our laser projection demos in Burbank, Beijing or Amsterdam over the past 12 months are in for a visual extravaganza, as we’ve brought one of our laser prototypes to ShowEast. As well, we will delight their auditory senses with the combination of Dolby® Atmos™ and Christie® Vive Audio™ systems.”

Specifically, on Wednesday October 23 at 9.30am in the AMC 19 auditorium, the Christie and Dolby 4K laser projection and audio technology demonstration will set new standards for image and sound presentation. Christie’s prototype 4K laser projector will be fronted by a RealD XL Cinema System and accompanied by Christie Vive Audio speakers and amplifiers configured for Dolby Atmos – a new audio solution that revolutionizes the experience of sound in entertainment – to deliver a premium cinema experience.

Christie leads the industry in the development of cinema laser projectors, having announced in August the supply and installation of the world’s first commercial digital laser projection solution for the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, and was the first to receive a US FDA approval of variance allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in a cinema. Exhibitors will finally have the capability to show movies in 3D projected at 14 foot-lamberts, the standard brightness level for 2D presentations, but virtually impossible to achieve with a single projector for 3D on all but the smallest screens.

In the AMC 17 auditorium, Christie has installed two Christie Solaria CP4230 4K projectors in a
Christie® Duo™ configuration, fronted by the RealD XL-DP Cinema System and connected to a
Dolby Atmos system. Again, this configuration allows movies in 3D to be projected at 14 foot-lamberts, a brightness level typical of 2D presentations but seldom achieved with 3D screenings.

Christie SKA-3D Cinema Processor

The combination of two Christie Solaria projectors and the Christie Duo integration kit is significantly less expensive than other branded ‘big screen’ industry solutions. With lower upfront costs, and no ongoing revenue sharing, Christie Duo is the global solution for creating an affordable, premium large screen movie experience. The RealD XL-DP Cinema System is a pair of matched left- and right-eye polarizing filters featuring a patented XL light-recovery technology. It was designed specifically to be used with dual DLP Cinema® projector installations having larger screens, typically greater than 65 feet wide (20 meters).

Christie’s Booth Showcases Choices for Exhibitors
Visitors to the Christie booth #915 will have the opportunity to experience the firm’s cornerstone digital cinema offerings, whose scope encompasses new formats and technologies, backed by turnkey service and support for all of an exhibitor’s operations.

On the product front, visitors can view and hear the merits of the Christie® Solaria® One, Christie Duo, Christie IMB™ and Christie Vive Audio offerings, the latter including the latest LA3, LA3C and LA3S suite of speakers.

A complete projection solution for screens up to 35 feet, the Christie Solaria One comes with a zoom lens, custom-designed Xenon lamp, and a Christie Integrated Media Block (IMB) with its own easy-to-operate Screen Management Software (SMS). The Solaria One is brightest in its class, since it projects 8000 lumens in the DCI color space, 9000 for alternative content and in its Solaria One+ variation, projects 9000 lumens in the DCI color space and 10,000 lumens for alternative content.

Also on display will be the long-awaited Christie® SKA-3D cinema processor, which makes alternative content – such as preshow advertising and content from Blu-ray Disc players, gaming consoles, satellite receivers, computers and multiple 2D and 3D sources – look and sound as spectacular as feature presentations. This powerful audio and video processor can extract the latest, high-quality, lossless audio from HDMI signals, such as Dolby TrueHD® and DTS-HD Master Audio®, for integrating into cinema audio systems. Christie SKA-3D is now shipping in North America and will be available globally next month.

Christie’s Managed Services Exhibits Service Solutions for Cinema
Christie’s Managed Services offer a wide range of options for managing cinema equipment including projection/audio systems and lobby digital signage. Exhibitors partner with Christie at every stage –from system design to staging and testing, onsite maintenance, remote monitoring and transparent real-time reporting.

A Christie® WeatherAll FHD551-W LCD outdoor display with multimedia will highlight eye-catching, in-lobby digital signage displays, including Allure Global Solutions’ digital box office, showing the latest movie trailers, as well as Managed Services’ expertise in designing, building, deploying and supporting a digital signage network that’s right for exhibitors.

Through video on a Christie FHD461-X HD LCD panel, attendees will experience Christie’s state-of-the-art Network Operations Center (NOC), which monitors and services more than 110,000 remote devices for studio and exhibition customers in more than 2,500 locations in North America and several locations globally including Australia, China, Mexico and Russia. The NOC’s combination of around-the-clock remote monitoring and services help to safeguard customers’ visual technology displays.

The Managed Services team will also have video demonstration of their customized turnkey boothless projection lift system as part of a complete customized solution.

Flexible Financing for the Home Stretch Digital Cinema Conversions, Courtesy of Scrabble
For independent theatres that still need to convert to digital cinema, Christie has established a joint venture with Scrabble Ventures LLC. This venture helps exhibitors finance, over time, the purchase of a Christie digital cinema projector, and has already helped many community theatres make the move to digital, including Viva Cinemas, Villagio Cinemas and the Totem & Roxy Cinemas. Scrabble representatives will be at their booth, #918, across from the Christie booth, to assist exhibitors in understanding their options to convert to digital cinema. The annual ShowEast conference, now in its 28th year, is being held at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood, Florida, Oct. 21-25.

Legendary Engineer and Producer Bruce Botnick Outfits His Studio with Three of HARMAN’s JBL Professional M2 Master Reference Monitors

NEW YORK, New York – To anyone in the pro audio industry, it’s not much of a secret that Bruce Botnick is one of the industry’s most accomplished engineers and producers. He secured his reputation in the 1960s as the producer of the Doors’ classic LA Woman album, engineer of the first two Love albums and co-producer of the band’s masterpiece, Forever Changes. Botnick has worked on records by the Rolling Stones, Eddie Money and many others and as an engineer for film composer Jerry Goldsmith on more than 100 movie soundtracks. Recently, Botnick purchased three JBL M2 Master Reference Monitors for use as Left/Center/Right loudspeakers in his studio. The M2 is a 2-way large-format loudspeaker designed to set new standards for sonic accuracy and dynamic range in professional monitoring environments.

Botnick has always kept an eye on recording technology advancements and first encountered the M2 at the 2012 AES Convention, when it was still in the development stage. “I heard these loudspeakers in a less-than-ideal environment and they still sounded amazing,” said Botnick, who then told JBL’s Peter Chaikin he’d like to try them and judge them in his studio as soon as they were in production. In early 2013, Botnick visited the JBL Professional headquarters in Northridge for a second listen and found the sound exceptional. “At that point I made the decision to simply go ahead and buy them without ever having mixed on them in my studio,” he said. After the M2’s arrived, Botnick immediately began a project to mix the score for the historical drama Parkland. In preparation, his newly installed L,C,R M2 system was tuned by the Dolby staff, accessing the filters in the BSS Soundweb London BLU800 processor which in Botnick’s system, serves as the M2 crossovers and also the system’s room EQ. All parameters in the Soundweb London can be accessed from a laptop using HARMAN London Architect™ software. The M2’s system tune-ability ensures an extremely accurate tonal balance in a broad range of mix environments.

“I loved mixing on the M2 system right off the bat,” Botnick added. “I was able to mix for many hours and not get ear fatigue. The sonic images that came out of the M2 were really big, so when we subsequently went into the main dubbing theater at post-production facility Todd AO in Hollywood and put the music up, it translated incredibly well.” The correlation between the sound heard in Botnick’s studio and the Todd AO sound stage meant he could trust his mixes more than ever before in going from the studio to the cinema.

Another advantage Botnick finds is that he doesn’t have to restrict himself to listening in a narrow sweet spot, thanks to the excellent off-axis response made possible by a new Image Control Waveguide, designed specifically for the M2. The Image Control Waveguide provides a seamless transition between the M2’s newly developed D2 high-frequency driver and the woofer and delivers an accurate tonal balance and superlative imaging and detail to a broad area of the listening room. “I can turn sideways to work on something and still hear the balance. It’s not ‘pointy’ and the speakers don’t buzz on the high end,” Botnick noted.

Botnick can play the M2 at a relatively loud level and still be confident of hearing accurate reproduction. “Film music mixing should be done at an 85dB level and I’m very strict about that,” he said. “The image size of the M2 is just breathtaking, and you don’t’ feel like your hearing the speakers as separate entities in the room—you get the sense that you’re hearing everything in the correct proportions behind the screen as you would in the cinema.”

“The M2 speaks to you effortlessly,” Botnick added. “It’s a much easier loudspeaker to listen to than most and I can get a good balance almost instantly. If it doesn’t sound good on the M2, it doesn’t sound good, period—for me a great speaker also lets me hear if something isn’t working.”

In mixing Parkland, Botnick went into the final mix with 10 5.1 surround sound stems. “Even with 10 stems totaling 60 tracks, the M2 let me hear into the mix, perfectly layered on top of one another no matter how complex the mix became. Hearing that deeply into the score enabled me to tailor all the reverbs and ambient sounds so they translated really well and created the perfect sonic environment for every scene.” Parkland had its theatrical release this month.

Botnick recognizes the engineering effort that went into the JBL M2. “I appreciate the fact that the people who worked on the M2 actually listen to music and know what it’s supposed to sound like, and can trust their ears and not just a measurement graph. They know how a good mix should sound.”

Sound Devices Introduces Improved Features for 664 Production Mixer at AES 2013

Latest Firmware Update Offers Enhanced Functionality

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 17, 2013 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, presents expanded recording capabilities, along with greater flexibility and ease-of-use outdoors for the company’s flagship 664 Production Mixer. Sound Devices showcases the benefits of the 664’s latest firmware update, Version 1.05, at the 135th International AES Convention (Gotham Sound and Communications, Booth 2738).

Sound Devices 664 features six ultra-low-noise, high-dynamic-range preamps that accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim control and direct outputs per channel. Featuring full analog audio paths for high-performance audio and superb power efficiency, the 664 also has numerous digital capabilities. Inputs 1 and 6 can be selected as AES3 or AES42 inputs for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking. The 664’s analog output compliment includes four output buses. The L and R buses are on balanced XLR, 10-Pin and TA-3M connectors and on unbalanced TA-3M or 3.5mm connectors. Secondary output buses X1 and X2 are available on balanced TA-3M connectors. Users can route inputs and buses to four AES3 connections for eight digital outputs on the XLR and 10-pin connectors.

Firmware version 1.05 brings additional features to the already-powerful mixer, including greater flexibility and ease-of-use outdoors. The “LCD Daylight Display” mode incorporates a daylight-specific color scheme and solid bar metering option for improved readability in direct sunlight. Sound Devices has also incorporated additional front panel button shortcuts, including “LCD Daylight Display” mode (HP + SELECT encoders) and Phrase list (HP + RTN B/C) for fast entry of metadata notes. Version 1.05 also incorporates the shortcut for activating different setup tone modes. Users also have new “Track Names in Meters” options (without color gradient/ramp) that are selectable for either right- or left-side display.

With version 1.05, 664 now offers users Monophonic Broadcast WAV file support, with the ability to record up to 10 tracks to two cards, with up to three seconds of record pre-roll. If a card not optimized for multi-channel monophonic file recording is used, or if the monophonic 10-track limit is exceeded, a warning message is displayed on the LCD when starting a recording. Polyphonic mode or reducing track count is recommended. In addition, when formatted in the 664, SD cards 64 GB and larger are now automatically formatted as ExFAT (in accordance with the SD Association’s recommendation). All CF cards and lower-capacity SD cards remain FAT32. Version 1.05 also enables a Headphone Volume or Headphone Preset default option, which sets the HP encoder to operate as headphone level or to select HP presets when rotated. Pressing the headphone encoder momentarily activates the alternative function.
