Christie and USIS Partnership Inspire AppNexus Employees with High Tech Office Spaces

Christie® and USIS AudioVisual Systems achieved grand success at AppNexus in creating additional space on a floor that includes both open plan office space and a basketball court.

AppNexus Basketball Court uses Christie Projector

AppNexus Basketball Court uses Christie Projector

AppNexus is a high tech company occupying three floors of office space on 23rd Street in New York City. As part of its culture, AppNexus holds employee motivational meetings called “Razzles.” Razzles include the use of Christie projectors and other tools to ignite excitement and motivate the team. At the end of a Razzle, employees can head from the fourth floor (where the Razzles are held) down to the second floor where the basketball court is located to work off the day’s stress.

According to Todd Hutchins (CTS-D), chief technology officer, USIS AudioVisual Systems, AppNexus needed additional Razzle space. The answer was to equip the second floor  where the basketball court is located  with technology on par with the fourth floor Razzle space where three Christie DS+6K-M projectors are located, ultimately creating an extension of the fourth floor. This included the installation of one Christie HD10K-M projector and the ability to do high-end video collaboration.

“AppNexus is critical when it comes to the projected image and audio quality,” said Hutchins. “When they use the room for presentations, there may be 400 people in the space that connect between several floors, plus others from international offices  it has to be perfect.”

When it came time to make a decision on the projector requirements, USIS AudioVisual Systems turned to Christie to fulfill its projection needs.

“We chose Christie not only because their products are superior but because they have always held true to our partner relationship. Whether we’ve needed technical support, sales assistance, or demonstrations, Christie has never let us down,” added Hutchins. “With Christie  it’s all about support. If our team has any issues, all we have to do is call and someone from Christie will be at our side to help, as any true partner should be. Because of what we do and how we do it, we will partner only with manufacturers who fully support their products.”

Christie Launches First National Experiential Network for Cinema Lobbies

Christie® today announced the launch of its new media initiative, Christie Experiential Networks® (CEN). Based on the theme “From the Street to the Screens™,” the network features unique digital destinations such as the Christie double-sided digital standee, the experiential video wall and the hero screen; some of which will be introduced during ShowEast, Oct. 27-30, in Hollywood, Florida.

Christie Experiential Networks Standee Rendering

“Christie was at the forefront leading the conversion of film to digital projection, and we are today the first to deploy a refined experiential strategy that will transform the way exhibitors, brands, agencies and studios connect with moviegoers across the country,” said Kevin Romano, senior director, Global Media, at Christie. “From projection mapping to mobile, to augmented reality and gesture interactions, we are committed to delivering superior, content-driven experiences for the cinema industry.”

New Role, New Business Model
Christie Experiential Networks (CEN) adds a new layer to how Christie brings value to the cinema industry. With this new initiative, Christie becomes a network operator that supplies technologies and digital content to exhibitors’ lobbies. Christie provides standard track installations at no cost to the exhibitor and can also provide personalized concepts for a competitive investment. CEN’s team of media specialists will manage advertising sales, in a revenue-share model with the exhibitors.

Experiential, Mass Media Style
From a brand and studio perspective, Christie’s new CEN provides access to a large-scale network of refined, multi-platform digital experiences for the consumer. Technologies and content strategy will, for example, enable studios to transform a trailer into a 4K gesture experience; or brands to create an interactive experience from an app, such as a 30-second ad or a static poster. Then the experience can be distributed on a national scale in top designated market areas. A variety of experience options are available for brands and studios.

More Entertainment Value Means More Guest Engagement, and More Revenues

CEN’s mission is to create new revenue streams for exhibitors, deliver refined media opportunities for brands and studios, and offer high-impact digital experiences for the consumer. Denys Lavigne, senior director, Experience Strategy and Creative Services, at Christie: “It is time that exhibitor lobby spaces become a legitimate part of the cinema experience and growth strategy for the industry. Experiential is growing everywhere; brands and studios are embracing it, and consumers expect it. With similar experiential projects that we’ve created for other industries, we observed that when customers are engaged there is more dwell time, which means higher brand impact, and a better overall experience.”

The Christie Experiential Networks programming will also integrate promotional elements such as discounts, special promotions and giveaways. Romano added, “Guests who interact with the digital displays will gain a direct and immediate benefit that makes their experience that much better.” These opportunities extend to studios, product marketers, advertisers, and exhibitors, who will be showcased on the new network as well as on the legacy systems Christie plans to integrate as one high-impact digital media within the exhibitor environment.

From the Street to the ScreensTM – a 360-Degree Perspective

Christie is delivering this new media initiative as part of its 360-degree digital solution capabilities. Sean James, vice president, Global Professional Services, at Christie, said “The industry might not be fully aware but Christie has developed a solid track record over the past five years in delivering next generation digital signage applications for our clients and partners. Our recent acquisition of Arsenal Media reinforced our unique position as a total solutions provider from strategy, hardware and software, to content, enterprise-level network operations center, maintenance and ongoing technical support. Now, with the addition of our media sales services, headed by Kevin Romano who has played a key role in the development of brand advertising in cinema, we feel we have built the ideal team to accompany the cinema industry in this next phase of innovation and growth.”

In this context, Mr. Lavigne will share his knowledge of digital planning, content and technology on the ‘Monetizing Your Digital Investment-New Technologies to Serve the Exhibition Community’ panel, scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 8.30 a.m. – 9.30 a.m.

Registration for the 21st HPA Tech Retreat Now Open

The Bellwether Entertainment Technology Event Returns to Indian Wells
HPA Tech Retreat

(Los Angeles, CA) Today at the SMPTE Symposium, produced by the Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA(r), registration for the 2015 HPA Tech Retreat officially opened. For the 21st consecutive year, a veritable who’s who of engineering, technology, creativity and strategic business leaders will gather in the desert to discuss the trends and technologies of the future, while tackling head-on the issues of the present. The HPA Tech Retreat takes place at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells, near Palm Springs, CA, from February 9th to the 13th, 2015.

The HPA’s preeminent event enjoys a global reach, bringing together the thought leaders and senior practitioners driving the rapidly advancing entertainment technology landscape. The HPA Tech Retreat has consistently proven to be a crucial gathering where technological developments in production, post production and broadcast are unveiled, discussed and debated. During the Tech Retreat, attendees from the media and entertainment industries are uniquely able to share time and ideas with academics from around the world, scientists, and experts in technology from various disciplines. The environment is one of discovery and exploration.

Mark Schubin, who has led the programming for the HPA Tech Retreat for many years, notes, “Each year, we receive submissions from all over the world – about six times more than we can possibly use – and, based on what I’ve seen so far, it’s going to be hard to choose. So many new technologies have been introduced at the Retreat over the years that it’s tough to count them all.”

Over the course of its history, the HPA Tech Retreat has seen a number of breakthrough products and processes previewed in advance of their actual debuts. Surround headphones, full-color full-motion holograms, Sony’s HDCAM SR, SR Memory, targeted-ad production and distribution systems, Panasonic’s Varicam and stereoscopic cameras, Dolby’s high-dynamic-range video monitors, Pencil-beam microphones, and OLED monitors to name just a few of the many “firsts” to be unveiled at the Tech Retreat.

Leon Silverman, President of HPA, notes, “The Tech Retreat is the place you go to see history before it’s made, and to move and shake with the movers and shakers across the technology community. The subjects are always topical, but the real value of this event is the ability to share ideas and challenges, to understand from those who really know and get inspired. While I take away so much from this event each year in program content, an equally important take away comes from mingling with this amazing group – the teachers who teach the teachers. If you have not been to the Tech Retreat, you owe it to yourself to make a pilgrimage to the desert. If you have been, you know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Breakfast roundtables are also a popular part of every HPA Tech Retreat. Schubin comments, “Participants begin hashing out the future of media at the lively breakfast roundtables. Among the topics already confirmed for the 2015 event are net neutrality, content security, workflow complications, and a review of the legislative and regulatory environment.”

The HPA Tech Retreat is a not to be missed opportunity for industry professionals. The five day, multifaceted event includes dynamic conference sessions, a curated Demo Room with leading-edge technologies, networking events, and parties. The session schedule and programming information will be announced soon.

Earlier this year, SMPTE and HPA became official partners, moving forward with plans for full organizational consolidation by May 2015. Today’s Symposium is the first jointly produced HPA/ SMPTE event, an auspicious time to open registration for the HPA Tech Retreat.

The event has a history of selling out, and timely registration for the 2015 HPA Tech Retreat is recommended. Registration at Early Bird rates is now available, REGISTER. For more information on the event and sponsorship opportunities, visit www.hpaonline.com, call the HPA office at (213) 614-0860, or email Eileen Kramer at ekramer@hpaonline.com.

Christie’s Donation to CHOC Children’s Hospital Helps Create Movie Theater for Young Patients

Christie, a global leader in advanced cinema technologies and visual display solutions, has continued its philosophy of giving back to the community by donating a state-of-the-art digital projector, screen, and audio solution to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children’s). With this donation, inpatients will have their very own, special movie theater to view movies in.

Children's Hospital of Orange County

Children’s Hospital of Orange County

The grand opening of the movie theater took place on October 16 at CHOC with a ribbon cutting ceremony, activities for the children, and culminated with a screening of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, a new release from Disney®.

Christie’s CEO, Jack Kline, a Board member of the Lollipop Theater Network – a non-profit charity organization whose mission is to bring movies to in-patient, ill children who are unable to go to a regular movie theater – is a passionate supporter of this cause.

“On behalf of everyone at Christie, I want to say how pleased we are to be able to contribute to this worthy cause,” said Jack Kline, CEO, Christie. “Personally, it’s a cause near and dear to my heart as well, given my involvement with LOLLIPOP, and I’m excited about providing the CHOC Children’s movie theater with our top-notch equipment.”

Lollipop Theater Network (LOLLIPOP) coordinates with studios to bring new release, current release, and past release movies to children too ill to travel to a theater on their own. Often, it is one of the children’s final wishes to be able to see a certain movie, and that wish is granted through the efforts of Lollipop Theater Network.

“We are incredibly grateful to Christie for its role in CHOC’s new movie theater, which will allow our patients to escape – a little – from the hospital routine and enjoy being kids. We can’t wait to see our patients gather in our theater, enjoy popcorn and settle in to watch a new movie together,” said Stephanie DeMello, child life manager, CHOC Children’s.

The new theater will be a dedicated room where the patients can go to see these movies. With movie theater seating, a popcorn machine, velvet drapes, and custom projector, audio system and screen, the room will be a refuge from the standard routines of a hospital environment.

Highlighting the theater will be the Christie DHD555-GS projector, unveiled in June, 2014. This projector boasts 1-chip DLP® technology, renowned for its excellent image quality and reliability, proving roughly 20,000 hours of low-cost operation. The projector outputs a native, high definition resolution of 1920 x 1080, and is rated at 5,000 ANSI lumens of brightness.

STEWART FILMSCREEN ELEVATES RESIDENTIAL THEATER TO COMMERCIAL DIGITAL CINEMA LEVEL WITH “THE 4K+ ULTRA HD EXPERIENCE THEATER” DEMONSTRATION AT CEDIA EXPO 2014

Stewart and Quantum Media Systems partner to provide 4K Ultra HD private theater packages that include advanced Digital Cinema projectors, uncompressed native 4K content, and highly specialized Stewart four-way masking screens

TORRANCE, CA and DENVER, CO – CEDIA BOOTH #136 – SEPTEMBER 10, 2014– Stewart Filmscreen Corp., the leading international manufacturer of projection screens and specialty optical coatings for residential and commercial applications—and the only manufacturer in the category that has been producing 4K+ products since 1947—is thrilled to bring CEDIA Expo attendees some of the best and most immersive visual experiences on the show floor. In collaboration with Quantum Media Systems, Stewart Filmscreen will present “The 4K+ Ultra HD Experience Theater” in booth #136 at the Colorado Convention Center September 11-13, in Denver, Colo.

Quantum Media Systems specializes in creating 4K private theater systems that go beyond typical home theater setups. Exclusively featuring Stewart Filmscreen projection screens, Quantum Media Systems Digital Cinema packages also include commercial-grade Digital Cinema projectors, proprietary Quantum Media Systems servers, and native and uncompressed 4K content for both first-run and home video releases, plus more. The 20’x24’x14’ 4K+ Ultra HD Experience Theater in Stewart Filmscreen’s booth at CEDIA Expo will feature an integrated Quantum Media Digital Cinema system that includes:

·  A 15-foot wide 1.78:1 Stewart Filmscreen Director’s Choice screen.

·  4K Commercial-grade Digital Cinema projectors.

·  Multiple servers running a wide variety of specialized uncompressed native 4K content utilizing the motion picture standard, JPEG 2000 codec.

“The video quality we are achieving in this space is so incredible, we hesitate to even call it ‘home theater’, which could be something as simple as a TV and a pair of speakers. These systems deserve the moniker private theater, because they have the same quality you’d find in a commercial 4K Digital Cinema, in a residential environment,” says Ken Hoffman, CEO of Quantum Media Systems. “Best yet, these systems are available to integrators right now.”

Quantum Media Systems uses standards practiced in commercial Digital Cinemas to deliver the 4K viewing experience, including 10-12 bit DCI P3 color space, DCP delivery (the method for delivering first-run Digital Cinema movies to commercial theaters), high dynamic range, JPEG 2000 encoding, and more. Stewart Filmscreen is used exclusively for these applications as the screens provide superior resolution and pixel density.

“We selected Stewart for Quantum Media Systems Digital Cinema packages because Stewart Filmscreen is not only a household name, it has a rich legacy of manufacturing 4K screen solutions that goes all the back to 1947. Because Stewart works closely with the Hollywood community, the company uniquely understands the complex technologies involved in our offering and delivers best-in-class screens that are ideally suited to the next-level residential theaters dealers are creating,” furthered Hoffman.

Those interested in experiencing, delivering, and learning more about the best possible visual experience are encouraged to connect with the Stewart Filmscreen team, Ken Hoffman, CEO of Quantum Media Systems, or Cesar Guererro, Director of Technology, while visiting the Stewart Filmscreen 4K+ Ultra HD Experience Center at CEDIA Expo in booth #136.

Christie Brings Pedigree Cinema Experience to Home Entertainment at CEDIA 2014

Christie®, the global leader in visual display and audio technologies, now brings its illustrious pedigree and 85 years’ experience to home entertainment at CEDIA 2014, September 10-13 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. The tradeshow floor opens September 11 at 9:00 a.m. with Christie showcasing a variety of 3-chip DLP®, 1-chip DLP®, flat panel and audio solutions available for home entertainment, all bearing the celebrated Christie name and backed with the quality, reliability and service of the distinguished Christie brand.

Using DCI and alternative 4K content, the inviting 1,200 square foot booth features a premium home-entertainment theater where audiences will enjoy the exhilarating and memorable Christie experience with the thundering sounds and vibrant images previously available only in commercial theaters or to A-list celebrities. Additional alternative content will also be featured on secondary displays at the booth.

Additional presentations by Christie home entertainment experts will take place throughout the show, which will also include a ‘Who is Christie?’ quiz. Visitors to the booth who complete a survey can win a pair of M1 Vive Audio speakers and other special giveaways will be available.

The Christie Experience comes to your home
A trailblazer in Digital Cinema® technology, event marketing, and both large and small venue display applications, Christie is now expanding its expertise and scaling it to fit the home environment. George Walter, director of Home Entertainment, Christie, will be attending the show, participating in presentations, and giving media interviews.

“Now, the Christie cinema experience you’ve enjoyed at your local theater is available in the comfort and convenience of your home,” said Walter. “Working with an elite dealer system, Christie will orchestrate the delivery, installation and servicing of a wide-range of projectors, flat panel displays, processors and audio solutions to strengthen and complement the services of these high-end integrators.”

Christie home entertainment customers can also connect with the Christie Network Operations Center (NOC) to monitor their systems and components, receive software updates, and have access to 24/7 concierge support.
