ASHLY PEMA™ POWERED PROCESSORS IN THE BIG HOUSE

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK – MARCH 2012: Although the universe of institutions that require professional sound reinforcement includes churches, schools, and other places that can make a sound integrator feel warm and fuzzy at the end of the day, it is also populated by places like the Yaphank Correctional Facility (YCF) on Long Island, New York. The new $133-million building will house 650 inmates when it is finally commissioned for operation in the spring of 2012. To deliver both routine and safety-related information, Pro Sound Alliance (Troy, New York) a division of Live Sound, Inc., provided a three-tiered redundant paging system centered on the (figuratively) bulletproof Ashly Pema™ powered processor.

The new YCF is designed around six “pods,” each of which will house one-hundred, or so, inmates in a way that maximizes the efficiency with which they can be guarded. Beyond the pods, common areas, food preparation quarters, medical facilities, etc. require dedicated paging zones as well. Pro Sound Alliance general manager Dominick Campana served as project engineer at YCF. “It was a little bit complicated, as we were a subcontractor to a subcontractor to a subcontractor to a prime contractor for the owner, Suffolk County Department of Public Works,” he laughed. “They were counting on our expertise to design and install a system that would deliver the functionality and performance required by the Sheriff’s department together with the architect and engineer’s specifications and concept drawing.”

He continued, “Acoustics are seldom addressed in such facilities. There are little or no absorptive surface materials. All of the speakers are hindered by heavy-duty vandal-proof hardware. The potential background noise is extremely loud. Most input signals are generated from telephone-quality paging and security systems. And so, with all that stacked up against me, I had to find a processor and amplifier capable of multi-layer priority ducking, matrix routing, extensive signal processing, and significant output power to make sure that all pages and announcements are heard loud and clear.” The Ashly Pema multi-channel amp with on-board Protea(tm) DSP processor met all of those requirements at a fair price-point and with Ashly’s reliability and support.

The system covers thirty-plus zones with one Ashly Pema 8250.70 and six Pema 4250.70s powering over 600 Lowell 805-T72 loudspeakers. Both Pema models provide full-blooded 8×8 DSP together with eight (8250) or four (4250) 250-watt amplifier channels in just two rack spaces. Three redundant paging systems at different priority levels provide input.

An industrial-grade Black Creek security intercom system provides top-priority paging: any Black Creek handset or computer-controlled announcement or alarm will immediately take control of the PA system. The most commonly used paging source occupies the second level – a comprehensive Stentofon IP telephone paging system with sixteen microphone stations located throughout the facility. Finally, built-in microphones and program sources at each of seven head ends provides the third-level input.

“We were introduced to the Ashly Pema through our extensive use of the Ashly ne24.24M modular DSP,” said Campana. “We love the flexibility, simplicity, and power of the Protea software platform. Moreover, Ashly’s ‘network-enabled’ equipment is vastly easier to use than other equipment in its class. Instead of opening up control panels, messing with ‘COMM-this’ and ‘PORT-that’ for two hours, the Ashly equipment plugs into the computer and just works.” While Campana says he welcomes that speed and simplicity at any job, it was especially important at YCF. “Getting in there for any changes will not be easy,” he laughed. “The process can take quite awhile! With the Ashly Pema in place, I was able to make efficient use of my time. It will be even trickier to go back for any updates or a service call when the inmates are in residence, so I’m glad, first, that the Ashly gear is so solid, and, second, that it’s so quick to work with in case I have to go back.” Campana reported that the sales support from Charlie Eaton at Eaton Sales and Marketing was exemplary.

Campana commissioned the system in the presence of prison officials and security system integrators. “They were stunned at how wonderful it sounded,” he said. “They’re not used to working with people from a true audio background. I wasn’t just trying to make the pages intelligible, I was trying to make them pleasingly so!” Where most security integrators might tap a loudspeaker at 0.5 or 1 watt, Campana leveraged the muscle of the Ashly Pema units to tap loudspeakers at between 5 and 7.5 watts. “I know that people are under the impression that there are tons of powerful amps out there,” he said. “But I defy anyone to come close to the Pema’s eight channels at 250 watts each with full DSP in just two rack spaces at the price point Ashly manages. It’s a godsend. It’s perfect.”

ViewPoint™ Console Key To Medical Center Surveillance Upgrade

Abilene, TX––Hendrick Medical Center is one of the largest hospitals in the West Texas area serving referrals from 16 smaller hospitals in the surrounding counties. Known for its sophisticated trauma center and high level of care, the flagship 500-bed acute care center is undergoing a multi-million dollar expansion.

The center’s expansion also includes the upgrade of its surveillance operation, which features a totally new workspace and technology transition from analog to IP, a new CCTV system that will eventually include 200 cameras, and a conversion from barcode to Proximity card readers. “A huge project,” as Roger Dickey, Director of Security at Hendrick, rightfully describes it.

Assisting Dickey on the project is system integrator James Holden of Siemens. Holden explains that, along with providing the newer technology, he and Siemens were tasked to design a new workspace for the security guard monitoring staff with first destination radio, video, access control and alarm management. A new console was the starting point.

“Roger and I visited a security trade show in Dallas and looked at different furniture products,” Holden explains. “We decided on Middle Atlantic’s ViewPoint console because it was flexible, attractive and offered a lot of ergonomic options.”

Dickey adds, “I’d never seen the Middle Atlantic furniture, but their staff was very helpful. I could sit down at their console and get a feel for what my guys were going to be looking at. I was also interested in their cable management system and how easy it would be for repair people to access the console.

“Because of the console’s flexibility, I was able to try something very different this time around in terms of training my staff. I told them, ‘you are the ones who’re going to have to use this, so I need you to set up the camera views and how you want to use the console, not me.’

“This definitely put the challenge on my staff in terms of designing the views they receive and optimizing the console for their use. We have an event monitoring system tied to all of our alarms. Whether it‘s a motion or alarm activation of some sort, the system brings the event up to the spot monitor so the operator can decide whether or not it’s a problem. This helps us manage these situations.”

Reflecting Dickey’s staff’s criteria, the ViewPoint installed in the Center’s surveillance workspace includes a console-mounted VisionFrame system to mount three large 46” monitors behind three 23” monitors attached to the console itself. The console also includes top-mount turret racks on both ends, which his staff uses to store an 800 MHz frequency police/fire radio. When covered, these also provide additional surface space on the console for printers and other devices.

In terms of ergonomics, “my staff really likes it,” Dickey explains. “The way we’ve set up the console, we’re not trying to watch all the cameras at a specific time. When someone hits an alarm alerting us to a problem, we can hit a salvo of multiple views and depend on that before moving on to the event monitoring system.”

Dickey also wanted to display Hendrick’s CCTV system in an ergonomically sensible and productive way in terms of how many cameras his team could view at one time.

“ViewPoint just seemed to work best for what the client wanted to do,” adds Holden. “They needed more space horizontally. In changing over to IP we were converting from all of the older analog monitors, PCs and analog DVRs, so we needed a cohesive new approach for the guard personnel to manage the video and other systems.

“The actual installation worked out well. We went back and forth and made sure that we measured twice and cut once to ensure the monitors were at the right height and overall width. We talked about a variety of customization options including additional articulating arms when we saw how flexible they were.”

Also facilitating the installation, Middle Atlantic Designer™ software allowed Holden to show several different renditions of the console to Dickey and his staff. Once they had agreed on the final design, he was able to forward laminate samples of the finish so Dickey could totally envision what the console was going to look like. According to Holden, “Designer eliminated any surprises, which made everyone’s job easier.”

“They had a very crowded one-man console before, and even if there’s only one operator at the ViewPoint console, it can be quickly and easily accommodated to hold two operators because it’s long enough at 12 feet to let them expand and grow as the shifts change.

“When I sell a console like ViewPoint, it’s usually part of a pretty big project,” Holden concludes. “We’re happy, Roger and his staff are satisfied, and so is the hospital board. When the boards asks what they spent money for, seeing a black bulb in the ceiling doesn’t mean much to them. They may not know the difference between an old camera or new camera, or an analog and an IP system, but they know when they go into the new surveillance facility and see the console, because that’s the kind of thing that makes them respond a lot better.”

Dickey also underscores the console’s impact: “Let’s face it, this is a $92 million building project, and we needed a system that would still be in the game three to five years down the road. We went strictly with IP because of all the videos that are available to our staff. There’s no way a single or several security officers sitting at a console can view all of those cameras and do justice to that. So we really like to take the view the ViewPoint console gives us and spread it out, so if we have an event going on we can quickly push up the perimeters we want to view at the push of a button.

“ViewPoint has been so successful in getting our officers involved in the development of these protocols that they’ve created different views for the day shift, evening shift and night shift because each one of those shifts actually looks at things differently.

“And my guys really like the layout of this console,” Dickey explains. “The new 46” monitors give them a much larger and more effective view of what they’re looking at. They used to have 4” picture when they did multiple views. With this system, they have a much more identifiable picture that they can zoom in on to isolate a person they want to identify, blow that up on replay and capture it on DVD for evidence. The three smaller monitors include our computer dispatch, access control, and event monitoring systems. And we have two other spots for monitors that haven’t been mounted yet that we will use for internal communications.”

Summarizing, Dickey concludes, “The ViewPoint console has turned out to be the stepping-stone to doing all of the other things we had to do in order to build the security features into this new building. We’re very happy with the way things have worked out.”

Technomad Mass Notification System Powers Outdoor Audio at Western Washington University

Technomad Berlin narrow dispersion loudspeakers and PowerChiton amplifiers deliver intelligible voice to three outdoor zones on campus

BOSTON, February 22, 2012Western Washington University‘s sprawling campus in scenic Bellingham stretches 215 acres, with nearly 15,000 students walking the grounds during the fall and spring semesters. The university gives prominence to campus safety, recently upgrading its fire alarm system in 47 buildings and adding a mass notification system to improve audio quality and long-distance coverage.

Mills Electric Co., a Bellingham-based electrical and systems contractor serving the commercial and industrial markets, installed the multi-zone audio system in conjunction with Western Washington University support staff. Technomad Berlin narrow dispersion loudspeakers exclusively power three outdoor zones at campus-designated “gathering areas.”

Technomad PowerChiton high-power waterproof amplifier modules drive live and pre-recorded messages to the loudspeakers for campus-wide broadcast. The project also marries all indoor/outdoor PA points and associated pan/tilt/zoom cameras to an existing Edwards EST-3 campus-wide fire alarm system, programmed and upgraded by Performance System Integration, an Edwards EST Life Safety and Communications Strategic Partner.

The complete system ties to a central network infrastructure, enabling administration, campus police and other offices to deliver voice notifications to any single location, multiple zones, or every PA point in an “all-call” scenario.

Cory Kovacevich, a service and project manager at Mills Electric Co., notes that the Technomad loudspeakers produce intelligible voice over long distances, ensuring that students, staff and visitors hear emergency notifications loud and clear. Each gathering area includes two Technomad Berlin 90×40 loudspeakers, mounted between 20 and 90 feet from the ground depending on the location. Weatherproof construction ensures long-term durability and protection from the outdoor elements in rainy northwest Washington.

Kovacevich adds that the PowerChiton modules deliver 500 watts of clean power to each Berlin loudspeaker in a simple, easy-to-install package. Though IP66-rated and designed for permanent outdoor installation, Kovacevich installed the PowerChitons indoors at the central audio headend for easier accessibility.

“The PowerChitons come in small, non-metallic enclosures and take up minimal space, which is important because we have limited room to add equipment,” says Kovacevich. “The PowerChitons tie directly to the fire alarm system, and are mounted next to the fire alarm panels. This keeps everything but the loudspeakers and cameras in one building.”

Kovacevich notes that the overall system represents a major upgrade for the campus, enabling text-to-speech translation and remote access to make announcements over the system from off campus — in addition to video integration, multi-zone capability and superior audio quality.

“The Berlins put out some serious sound,” says Kovacevich. “We had recently broadcast a test message from the rooftop and saw people more than 100 yards away stop, turn around and look directly toward the loudspeakers. The university is very happy with the power, sound quality and clarity of the voice.”

New JVC Bullet Security Camera with Built-in IR LED Technology Delivers True Day/Night Operation

Middle Atlantic and Extron Electronics Initiate New Half Rack Standard for AV Integration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 2, 2012 Middle Atlantic Products, in conjunction with Extron Electronics, is initiating and supporting the establishment of a new standard for half-width rack systems for AV integration.

Working in cooperation with the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA), Extron and Middle Atlantic are seeking to establish and maintain a specific ECIA standard for what has typically been offered as a custom rack offering until now. To further strengthen the quality and application of the standard, the two companies are inviting manufacturers of compact-format devices to join a communication and working group for this effort.

Both manufacturers have recently developed product families – the Extron Half Rack Shelf System and Middle Atlantic’s new HR Series Half Racks – which, respectively, fit within and incorporate the proposed 10 5/8” overall width defined in the proposed new standard.

Commenting on the introduction and standard effort, Middle Atlantic Director of Marketing Kevin Handerson stated, “We are pleased to be working with device manufacturing partners to seize the initiative for establishing an ECIA standard for AV half rack systems. Compact 1RU HDcctv 16X16 Routing Switcher

Huntsville, Alabama – December 27, 2011 – PESA® today unveiled the new 16X16 PESA HDcctv Routing Switcher, the world’s first HDcctv routing switcher with full compliance to the HDcctv Alliance™ high-definition video interface standard for security and surveillance systems. With just a single RG-59 coax cable for each port, users can connect up to 16 HDcctv-compliant video cameras to the PESA HDcctv Routing Switcher and output up to 16 individual coax connections for HDcctv DVR or display devices. Designed specifically for high-definition video over coax, PESA’s new 16X16 HDcctv Routing Switcher features a compact 1RU enclosure, local or remote network control options and a redundant power supply and control card option.

With a compact frame design, the PESA HDcctv Routing Switcher uses full uncompressed video technology to distribute brilliant high resolution images from devices as far away as 100m over traditional RG-59 coax cable. With the 1.5Gbps enabled transport for each port, video resolutions for 720p and 1080p are evenly distributed without compression. Unlike IP-based switches and hubs using distributed 10Gbps backbone, PESA’s HDcctv Routing Switcher allocates a dedicated 1.5Gbps for each device connected to the router. In aggregate comparison to IP solutions, PESA’s 16X16 HDcctv compliant routing system provides over 24Gbps of non-blocking, non-compressed video switching.

Based on the HDcctv Alliance standard, all inputs are auto-equalized and outputs reclocked to transmit 720p25/30, 720p50/60, or 1080p25/30 video resolutions distances up to 100m (300ft). Two independent reference inputs allow easy selection of gen-lock from black burst or a tri-level sync source. The frame assembly features a front load / hot swappable matrix card and includes space for an optional redundant power supply and control module. Each HDcctv Routing Switcher provides control interfaces for PESA’s Ethernet control system or can be configured to support many third-party control systems. Additionally, the PESA HDcctv Routing Switcher easily supports an optional local pushbutton control panel, up to 80 remote control panels, or control via a unique PESA soft-panel – a software emulated version of control panels.

Barix to Introduce Compact Master Paging Station at ISE

Bi-directional audio path also supports intercom communications

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, December 6, 2011Barix AG unveils its Annuncicom PS1 Paging Station at the ISE show in Amsterdam early next year (January 31-February 2, RAI Center, Booth 2E70). The compact, elegant device gives commercial businesses, office buildings, educational institutions, medical facilities and others a simple, fully-integrated hardware solution for paging and intercom over IP.

The PS1 features two backlit push-to-talk buttons, volume control and a built-in speaker and microphone, giving security guards, receptionists and other operators a simple way to make announcements to an entire facility. The device’s IP addressability enables a simple connection to the network, allowing systems integrators and end users to take advantage of existing infrastructure, reducing costs and equipment requirements. Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability further simplifies installation, requiring only a single cable to the device.

The PS1 can also merge with background music systems — ideal for retailers, restaurants, hotels, clubs and other entertainment venues that wish to break into a stream with announcements. Bi-directional capability enables intercom for facility-wide, two-way communications — taking the PS1 beyond a basic paging device for ski areas, university campuses and other large areas that require talkback capability.
