IMT Delivers Media Private Cloud for Visual Data Media Services

Rhozet and EMC Isilon Scale-out NAS Essential in New Transcoding Workflows with Big Data Storage

Sierra Video Announces Aspen™ 3232 Multi-format Routing Switcher

GRASS VALLEY, CA – Sierra Video today announced the release of the Aspen 3232, the first model in a new line of compact video 3G HD-SDI routing switchers. The Aspen line will be a line of general utility 3G HD-SDI routing switchers ideal for use in any video installation, including rental and staging applications, higher education facilities, houses of worship, hospitals, broadcast facilities and post production facilities. The Aspen 3232 is a multi-rate router compatible with 3G, HD-SDI and SDI signals from 19 Mb/s to 2.97 Gb/s (3G).

The Aspen 3232 is compact at only 2.5” deep and takes up just 2RU in a standard equipment rack. The Aspen 3232 is also tremendously energy efficient, requiring less than 32 Watts of power including the power consumed by its standard built-in routing switcher control system and front panel panel..

A unique feature of the Aspen 3232 is that, due to its advanced technology, this router can drive signals farther than most typical 3G HD-SDI routing switchers. The Aspen 3232HD3G can drive 3G signals over 500ft (155 meters using Belden 1694A cable).

The Aspen 3232 routing switcher is a format-flexible 3G HD-SDI routing switcher capable of handling all SMPTE serial digital video signal formats on every input of the router including SMPTE 424M, SMPTE 259M, SMPTE 344M and DVB-ASI up to 540 Mbps and 3G and HD-SDI video signals conforming to SMPTE 292M (1.485GBps single link). The Sierra Video Aspen 3232 router also provides user control of the Input Equalization and Output Re-clocking circuitry. When using non-SMPTE signals the Re-clockers can be bypassed if required, so they do not interfere with the signal.

The introduction of the Aspen 3232 coincides with the introduction of Sierra’s new control system architecture based on IP, SNMP, and a web interface. The Aspen 3232’s embedded controller can be accessed via the TCP-IP or RS 232/422 serial interface making it easy to integrate into any automation or control system. The built-in web server offers convenient control and setup functions and works with any OS, browser and most handheld devices.

The Aspen 3232 includes a front panel control lockout and offers the ability to create and launch salvos. Companion audio routers are also available for the Aspen 3232 and are controllable by the embedded controller. A redundant power supply option is also available.

The Aspen 3232 multi-format routing switcher is the first model in a line of compact Aspen routers to be introduced in coming months and it is currently available from Sierra Video Systems and its worldwide reseller network.

College of the Canyons Anchors Remodeled Studio with Broadcast Pix Granite 5000 Live Video Production System

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced that College of the Canyons, a community college in Valencia, Calif., that serves the Santa Clarita area, has installed a Granite™ 5000 live video production system as part of an upgrade to HD production for its studio and control room facilities. The system is used for classroom instruction as well as the production of Cougar News, a student-produced news program that is streamed live to www.cougarnews.com.

Part of the Division of Fine and Performing Arts, the Department of Media Entertainment Arts (MEA) has more than 400 students, including more than 85 broadcast students. Ron Entrekin, broadcast lab technical engineer, said part of the certification offered through the department is based on providing training on professional equipment. The move to HD production was a must, he added, because “HD is where a lot of broadcast and high-end production houses are going.”

Local bond funds allocated for upgrading the college campus paid for the $1 million renovation. In addition to a new Granite 5000, which was installed in February by the Garden Grove, Calif.-based offices of VMI, Inc., the facility now features a Yamaha LS9 digital audio mixer and three new JVC GY-HD250U ProHD cameras with studio configurations on Libec pedestals.

Entrekin praised the 2 M/E workflow of the Granite 5000. With its DVI output, one M/E is used to feed background monitors on the set and change them on the fly during a show. “It did exactly what we wanted at a price we could afford,” Entrekin said. “The 2 M/E workflow is how we want to teach in the control room, and Broadcast Pix works better than any other system out there.”

For Entrekin, one of the main reasons for choosing the Granite system was Fluent™ Watch Folders, which allows students to import video files over the network, even during a live program. He also said they use the built-in clip and animation stores, as well as the built-in Harris Inscriber GS CG. Entrekin said there are also plans to integrate Fluent Rapid CG into the system to feed a handful of 46-inch monitors across the facility with updated news and weather, along with programming.

Granite 5000 includes support for Fluent-View customizable displays, but MEA added support for an additional two monitors for its facility. Three Fluent-View monitors are used in the control room – one for the director, two 60-inch LCD monitors for the technical director – while the fourth is used in the audio room. “The audio person can see what’s coming before it gets to air,” Entrekin explained. “We couldn’t do that before. Our audio students love being able to see what’s coming next.”

Students produce seven episodes of Cougar News each semester, as well as four specials. Episodes are also shown on SCVTV, the local PEG (public, education, government) channel on Time Warner Cable. The programs are also available on demand on the school’s Web site and www.scvtv.com.

Meanwhile, MEA’s previous production system, a Broadcast Pix Targa 2000 purchased in 2007, is now being used by advanced students to produce live school baseball and basketball coverage, which is streamed to the Web site via Skype. “Our students have found a use for it beyond what we expected,” Entrekin said.

Rock Church Produces Live Video Streaming with Broadcast Pix Granite 5000

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced that the Rock Church and World Outreach Center, based in San Bernadino, Calif., is using its new Granite™ 5000 integrated live video production system to distribute live video of its religious services for a growing Web-based audience, while simultaneously producing an image magnification (I-MAG) video presentation in its sanctuary.

Rock Church upgraded to Granite in May 2011, replacing a Slate™ system that was installed in 2010. According to Luke Cobrae, Rock Church’s video director and young adult pastor, the 2 M/E capability of the Granite 5000 was a primary reason for the upgrade. Both Broadcast Pix systems were installed by VMI, Inc., a systems integrator with offices in California and Washington. The Slate replaced an aging Video Toaster, which had been used since the church relocated to its current campus in 2003.

Established in 1988 in one of the most impoverished big cities in the United States, the non-denominational Rock Church has more than 20,000 members and regularly draws up to 7,000 each week for services Wednesday night, Friday night, Saturday morning, Sunday morning, and Sunday evening. “Video has always been a want, but budget is always a challenge,” said Cobrae. “Broadcast Pix completely opened the door for video production at the church. Our quality instantly skyrocketed.”

The church conducts 10 weekly services; two are streamed live and three others can be accessed at www.rockchurch.com, while a separate I-MAG presentation is produced for the congregation in the sanctuary and distributed across the 25-acre campus, which includes a school, café, and bookstore. The move to Granite also allows Rock Church to send a native HD signal directly to its two Christie LW600 projectors for I-MAG in the church, which significantly cut delay.

“Broadcast Pix went out of their way to make sure we were satisfied and the switcher suited our needs,” Cobrae added. “There’s a big difference between a studio-in-a-box and a Broadcast Pix system.”

Rock Church typically has a six-camera production for its services, including two center cameras, a dedicated camera for the singers and musicians, and a mounted pan/tilt/zoom camera for reaction shots from the congregation. It uses three Sony widescreen digital SD cameras and a combination of other cameras, including Panasonic AG-DVX100 and Sony PMW-EX1 handheld HD cameras. With its integrated frame synchronizers and multi-definition I/O, Granite seamlessly switches between the various sources.

Rock Church also takes advantage of Granite’s built-in Fluent™ workflow tools, including Fluent-View, which is used in conjunction with an Avitech Rainier multi-viewer. Cobrae has replaced the control room’s black-and-white CRT monitors with LCDs that use Fluent-View to display color images and much more information.

During services, Rock Church uses the integrated Fluent Clip Store extensively to provide sermon illustrations and video announcements – and Fluent Watch-Folders provide an easy way to import announcements or last-minute graphic changes. Plus, Granite’s external keyer is used to display lyrics and other graphics from ProPresenter. Cobrae said the production crew is a combination of volunteers and a small team of full-time and part-time staff.

Eventually, Rock Church plans to replace its analog and digital SD cameras with HD studio cameras. Cobrae also wants to explore video distribution to the other four Rock Church satellite campuses in 2012.

Kramer Introduces Unique VP-81KSi Step-In Switcher

Kramer Electronics is pleased to introduce the high−performance VP-81KSi, an analog Step-in switcher for computer graphics video. The unit can switch any one of eight inputs to one computer graphics video, one unbalanced and one balanced stereo audio and one twisted pair output. The VP-81KSi is designed to work with a family of Step-In modules: the SI-1VGA, SI-1VGAT and WSI-1VGA. These Step-in modules are part of Kramer’s Table Mount Solution Products, such as the line of TBUS models, which are mounted in or below conference room tables.

With the VP-81KSi, meeting attendees can connect the computer graphics video and audio from their laptops into the module located in a TBUS at their seat. The module is prewired to the switcher that is connected to the projector. Every attendee can make his laptop the active device on display by pressing a switch in the module.

The VP-81KSi is HDTV compatible and has a very high video bandwidth of 440 MHz (-3dB) to ensure transparent performance for signals with resolutions up to WUXGA. The HVS-300HS offers integrated frame synchronizers; up converters; 2D/3D wipe effects; keyer with chroma key; dual channel P-in-P; DSK and still stores; and 16-way multiviewer.

CAPER 2011 is also an opportunity to exhibit the FA-9500, a 3G/HD/SD multi-purpose signal processor for use in multi-standard, multi-format DTV environments. Besides functioning as a frame synchronizer, the FA-9500 provides up/down/cross/aspect conversion, plus a second converter for down/cross/aspect conversion, a color corrector, Dolby E encoder/decoder, and automatic video optimizer for all types of video and audio signals.

With its 1.5-terrabytes of recording capacity, the FOR-A LTR-100HS video archiving recorder ingests and archives large quantities of HD media cost-effectively using LTO-5 datatape. Equipped with a high-quality MPEG-2 encoder, the LTR-100HS includes an MXF wrapper/un-wrapper so that MXF files recorded in real-time to LTO-5 tape can be used directly by nonlinear editing systems.

Mountain Lake PBS Upgrades Control Room to HD with Broadcast Pix Granite 5000 Live Video Production System

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced that Plattsburgh, N.Y.-based Mountain Lake PBS (WCFE) has installed a Granite™ 5000 live video production system as part of its transition to full HD production and distribution. Completed in March, the updated control room and studio produces a variety of local programs, including the weekly Mountain Lake Journal newsmagazine.

The PBS member station serves the Burlington-Plattsburgh market (DMA #95), which includes areas of Vermont, New York, and Quebec. Director of engineering Charlie Zarbo said the studio and control room upgrades were the final stage of the station’s HD migration, which began with master control in 2007. The Granite 5000, purchased through HB Communications, replaced an aging Grass Valley 200 switcher. The HD upgrade also included new Hitachi Z-HD5000 studio cameras, Clear-Com intercom system, and Yamaha DM2000VCM digital audio mixer.

Zarbo has been very pleased with the Granite 5000 and is a fan of its PixButtons, which dynamically display sources and file names. “The control surface is nice, pretty intuitive. Whatever changes you make are reflected in the PixButtons, which is nice,” he said. “It’s got very good bang for the buck. Broadcast Pix does it all in one box at a very attractive price. We like it a lot.”

Beyond its 2 M/E switcher, Granite 5000 provides Mountain Lake PBS with a number of integrated Fluent™ workflow tools, including a clip store that is used regularly for productions. Although Granite includes a built-in Inscriber GS CG, Zarbo said the station produces its graphics with Adobe Photoshop, then easily transfers them to Granite via Fluent Watch-Folders.

Mountain Lake PBS replaced its CRT monitor wall with two 50-inch LCDs, which are fed by Granite’s built-in Fluent-View, providing a complete display for the technical director and producer. The control room also has smaller monitors for dedicated CG and audio use that are also fed by Fluent-View.

Zarbo said Fluent-View is very easy to arrange, so every TD tends to create their own on-screen look. “It’s very flexible,” he explained. “You can create a layout, save it, and recall it for a specific shoot.”
