New Control Room at Historic Trinity Church Built Around FOR-A Switcher

Cypress, CA – Located in the heart of Wall Street, Trinity Church was the first Anglican church in Manhattan. Founded in 1697, the iconic church has a rich history, including several signers of the Declaration of Independence (Alexander Hamilton is one) being laid to rest in its burial grounds. Aiming to preserve its 17th century roots while using 21st century technology to spread the message ofthe church, Trinity began planning the construction of a new control room early last year. The new control room was completed last month and is centered around a FOR-A 2 M/E HVS-390HS video production switcher.

The switcher first caught the attention of the house of worship’s director of media, production and operations, William Jarrett, at NAB 2013. “The HVS-390HS switcher is a perfect fit for our church,” explained Jarrett. “We appreciate the amount of inputs it offers and its optional video outputs. A frame synchronizer with every channel was also a big draw to us. We found that there’s an elegance about it that inherently made sense. We needed a system that was easy to use, and the flow of the switcher is simple for our operators to understand.”

In addition to using its video technology to perform IMAG (image magnification) production during Trinity’s services, the parish webcasts all of its Sunday morning and weekday services on its website, reaching viewers worldwide. Concerts from its Grammy-nominated choir, conferences, and other special and live events are also webcast. The first major production in the new studio was Handel’s Messiah, a widespread oratorio house of worship Christmas tradition that was first performed in the New World at Trinity Church.

The new control room was commissioned and blessed on December 8. The event was webcast on Trinity’s website, and can be viewed online here. Jarrett estimates that the switcher will be involved in 450-500 events throughout the course of a year.

FOR-A’s HVS-390HS Production Switcher Provides Value and Flexibility to Diverse New Customer Roster

Cypress, CA – Compact and cost efficient, FOR-A’s HVS-390HS video production switcher has proven itself ideal for a wide variety of applications. First introduced last year at NAB, current customers of the 1 M/E to 2 M/E switcher include houses of worship, universities, public access television stations, major newsgathering organizations, government agencies and network news stations.

Located in the heart of Lower Manhattan, Trinity Church, a historic Episcopal house of worship, recently purchased the HVS-390HS as the center of its new control room. Trinity Church regularly webcasts worship services, concerts, and conferences from its iconic Manhattan church, and estimates that the switcher will be used for 450-500 events throughout the course of a year.

“We found FOR-A’s HVS-390HS 2 M/E switcher to be exactly what we needed,” said William Jarrett, Trinity Church’s Director of Media, Production & Operations. “The switcher has an easy-to-understand flow, and the ease of use and layout of the switcher inherently made sense to us. News organization The Washington Post is another recent customer. The D.C.-based company is using the HVS-390HS along with FOR-A’s VTW-330HS character generator for a video wall application.

The HVS-390HS video switcher is also well suited for schools, and has recently been purchased by both the New York Institute of Technology and Worcester State University. NYIT installed the HVS-390HS as part of a control room upgrade in September. The switcher is being used for hands-on production classes and for video produced for the school’s global digital network.

“The switcher offers great value and features that empower our students,” explained Herb Savran, NYIT’s Chief Engineer of the Communication Arts Department. Savran has over 25 years of experience in using FOR-A equipment. “Our 2 M/E switcher provides extensive DVE and keyers options, multi-viewing and routing capabilities, and makes it easy for our students to produce a variety of fast-changing shows.”

Broadcasters ranging from local PEG facilities to worldwide broadcast networks are using the HVS-390HS. Wilbraham Public Access, which serves the local Wilbraham, MA area, recently purchased the FOR-A switcher for use in its television facility. New York’s ABC News is also an HVS-390HS customer, utilizing the switcher for mobile news production for the national network.

Phoenix, AZ-based company Road Dog Show Pros, who specializes in event management and corporate productions, is another new HVS-390HS switcher customer. The company currently has the switcher packaged in a flight pack, where it was first used during a November production in Nashville.

“We purchased the HVS-390HS because of the extensive amount of features it offers at a reasonable price point,” said Andrew Stavro, Road Dog Show Pro’s Technical Director. “A few things that stood out to me are the customizable labels for each source button, the two multi-viewers, and its Web interface. These features make set-up much easier for us. We’ve always found FOR-A products to be high-quality and reliable.”

FOR-A’s HVS-390HS is also ideal for government applications. The switcher is part of the video production setup at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Broadcast Pix Granite Integrated Production System Anchors Creative Video of Washington HD Mobile Productions

Billerica, Massachusetts – From the Kennedy Center to the National Mall, Creative Video of Washington, Inc., a full-service video production company based in McLean, Va., produces a variety of live events across the Washington, DC region. Although the company maintains a very healthy SD production business – a lot of association meetings are driven by PowerPoint presentations that still use the 4:3 aspect ratio – the company made the move to native HD production with its latest mobile package, which is anchored by a Broadcast Pix™ Granite™ 1000 integrated production system.

According to Kirby Whyte, CVW president, the Granite system has been in “almost constant use” since its launch in October 2012. “Frankly, it has become the heart of our HD switcher package,” he added. In addition to meetings, Creative Video regularly provides live video production for trade shows, awards ceremonies, and indoor and outdoor concerts. The company also offers pre-production and post-production services.

Creative Video had been using a Broadcast Pix Slate™ integrated production system since 2006. “The Slate became a real SD workhorse for us,” said Whyte. “When we decided to upgrade the production switcher to Granite, we built a complete mobile production package and then realized how powerful the Granite was. It was the best decision we ever made.”

The Granite is housed in a six-foot rack, along with two 17-inch monitors, intercom equipment, and CCUs for the package’s Sony HXC-100 cameras. “The advantage to the Granite Server is that you can build it into your engineering rack and do all the wiring permanently,” said Matthew Eidemiller, CVW vice president of production. The patch panel on the back of the Granite makes it easy to connect cameras and other inputs during setup.

On location, an engineer is stationed in front of the equipment rack to handle camera shading. The Granite’s control panel is positioned nearby on a work table, along with two 42-inch monitors and a laptop loaded with Granite’s optional Chyron Lyric PRO 8 graphic creation software. The company opted to install the software on a separate computer so the remote package would not need to be accessed to create graphics during pre-production.

For most live event projects, Creative Video relies on a TD, engineer, and perhaps a content manager (formerly known as a tape operator) who handles clips and CG. The Granite provides the flexibility to adjust to each client’s specific crew requirements. “In our business, it’s all budget driven,” Eidemiller explained. “No two jobs are the same. Having a system that you can customize for each individual job makes our lives a lot easier.”

Creative Video relies several of Granite’s built-in workflow tools, including Fluent-View, the customizable multi-view. Eidemiller changes the screen layout based on the type of live program being produced, and will often customize each 42-inch monitor separately to suit the unique viewing needs of the TD and content manager. “Those that have used it on their shows are blown away with how we can set up the screens for both the director and the TD,” Whyte added.

“I’ve always been a big Broadcast Pix proponent,” Eidemiller said. “We beat the system up more than most people. Things get bounced around from moving the system in and out of the truck. I love their customer support. They’re great at talking us through a solution or getting us what we need.”

Spectrum Productions Uses New Broadcast Pix Granite X Integrated Production System for SEC Football Events

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced Spectrum Productions, an AV production and rental services company, used its new Granite™ X integrated production system to produce video presentations for the Regions Bank SEC Coaches Luncheon and SEC Legends Dinner on Dec. 6 in Atlanta. The event staging included two 11×20-foot side video screens for video playback and image magnification (I-MAG), as well as an ultra-wide 52×16-foot,two-projector blend center display positioned behind the stage, all populated exclusively through the Broadcast Pix system.

The luncheon included a preview of the next day’s SEC Championship Game between the Auburn Tigers and Missouri Tigers, including insights from the head coaches of both programs, while the dinner honored 14 former players that were named the SEC 2013 Football Legends Class in September. Both events were held in the same hotel ballroom and featured a three-camera setup. According to Preston MacIntyre, president, Spectrum Productions, all video clips and graphics were accessed from the Granite’s built-in clip server.

Fluent Macros, Granite’s built-in file-based macros system, was used extensively for both programs. Spectrum created a series of complex transitions, which involved layers of motion loops, picture-in-picture compositions, keys, and more. “It really would be impossible to execute so many simultaneous cues without the Broadcast Pix Fluent Macros. That’s a lot of different commands for people to be running manually,” MacIntyre explained. “We wanted the consistency and repeatability of the macros. No matter how many steps, we knew everything was going to be perfect.”

To create content for the main (and unusually sized) screen, graphic images were produced in Adobe After Effects as 3840×1080 images. A reverse anamorphic process compressed the images down to 1920×1080 resolution, which created “squished” images when played back through the Granite. The output from the Granite was fed into a Vista Systems Spyder x20 video processor, which re-created the original aspect ratio and flawlessly fed the blended image into two projectors.

Since Spectrum received its Granite X system in November, it has been used for both SEC events, the NASCAR 2013 Nationwide / Camping World Truck Series Awards Banquet in Miami Beach, Fla., and the Coalition to Salute American Heroes 2013 Road to Recovery Conference in Orlando, Fla. Spectrum upgraded from its Granite 5000 system to the Granite X for its advanced multi-view capabilities, which offers 16 full motion source windows and makes it easier to work with robotic cameras. MacIntyre also praised Broadcast Pix’s constant, one-frame latency, which is important for live event production. “Some competing products have quite a bit of a challenge with video delay,” he added.

The YCbCr proc controls provide lift, gain, saturation, phase, white clip (hard and soft), black clip, and color saturation clip – all with user memory. Parameter updates are smooth and responsive, providing real-time adjustments ideal for use during live events. Even though the card provides extensive control of the signal from the RGB perspective, it will continue to pass those signals that fall outside of the RGB gamut. Pluge and YCbCr limit ramp signals pass without modification. When the CbCr saturation clip is activated, the saturation limiting operation will not affect the color phase.

Extron Announces Contact Closure Control Module for Switchers

Extron Electronics is pleased to introduce the CTR 8, a control module that adds contact closure control to most RS-232 controllable Extron simple or scaling switchers. The CTR 8 accepts up to eight contact closure inputs and converts them to SIS Simple Instruction Set serial commands that select the corresponding input on an Extron switcher. Video can be muted and un-muted by pressing a single switch in sequence, allowing the user to control the viewing of the presentation. Each contact closure input features a +5 VDC output that can be used to light an LED to indicate the active switch. Portland Thorns FC Stream Championship Season with Broadcast Pix

Billerica, Massachusetts – Fans of Portland Thorns FC, a professional women’s soccer team and part of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), were able to watch home games during the team’s 2013 championship season live on the Web via HD streaming video. The coverage was produced through a unique sharing of stadium resources anchored by a Broadcast Pix™ Granite™ 1000 integrated production system.

Both Thorns FC and the Portland Timbers Major League Soccer (MLS) team, owned by Peregrine Sports LLC, play at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, Ore. While Thorns FC wanted an online presence for the league’s inaugural season, the club opted not to invest in an entirely new control room.

Instead, built in a space originally designated as an audio booth for the stadium’s main control room, an area was established specifically for streaming Thorns FC matches. Using video output from the existing Granite 1000 production switcher allocated for in-stadium video wall presentations, combined with audio from the radio broadcast, each Web production was managed by a single operator. Dave Spraker of spraker.tv, who served as the integrator for the project, said it was essential to “leverage the existing Broadcast Pix system to do a second show.”

The Web streaming room, built around a 27-inch iMac, receives an output from the Granite 1000 via HD-SDI cable, which is fed into a Magma ExpressBox 3T Thunderbolt PCIe expansion box equipped with a Blackmagic Design DeckLink Quad HD capture card. Streaming is handled through Telestream’s Wirecast software. The room also includes dual touchscreens that serve as mirror displays of the main control room’s customized multi-view, which is part of the Granite’s built-in toolset.

In an effort to avoid the expense of an additional control panel, streaming productions are managed using iPixPanel, Broadcast Pix’s iPad-based virtual control interface. Matt Smith, director of broadcasting for the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC, said iPixPanel was a far better solution than keyboard and mouse-based control, especially when trying to TD a soccer match with shared resources. “It was a nice solution to be able to use the iPad,” he added. “That was the way to go.”

The system was installed in February, shortly before the Timbers began preseason and well in advance of Thorns FC’s first home game on April 21. Nine of 11 home games were streamed live to www.portlandthornsfc.com during the season. (The additional home games were televised by Fox Soccer.) Smith thought the Thorns FC streaming video game coverage was among the best in the league. He said Thorns FC had a very successful following on the Web that grew as the season progressed. “We knew there would be great interest in the team,” he recalled, “and we wanted to offer a high definition option for fans who wanted to see Thorns FC games online.”

The simultaneous productions were not entirely different, just tailored to suit the two audiences. The main production, designed for the large video wall in the south end of the stadium, included full-screen graphics, sponsorship messages, and extensive replays. The streaming presentation, however, had much fewer replays, as it was aimed at an online audience solely relying on the video stream to follow the action.

While most of the streaming coverage was simply a line cut of the in-stadium production, the Web director could take any source independently using the iPixPanel and coordinate with the stadium director on headset. For example, the streaming production could take the main game camera during replays or commercials, or switch to a stadium “beauty cam” during halftime. “It worked really well,” Smith said.
