SSL ‘Live’ Console Comes to the 2014 NAMM Show

“Initial industry response to the SSL Live console has been phenomenal… we are expecting a very busy demo schedule at the show.”

ANAHEIM – Solid State Logic, the world’s leading manufacturer of creative tools for audio professionals, is featuring Live, the company’s first console for live sound production, at the 2014 NAMM Show (Booth 6900). This will be the first west coast presentation of the console in a trade show and thus the first opportunity for hands-on demos for the professional live audio engineer community in the region.

“The initial industry response to the SSL Live console has been phenomenal,” says Piers Plaskitt, CEO of Solid State Logic, Inc. “We have been continuously busy at each event where we have shown the console, and we expect NAMM to follow the trend. It is extremely satisfying to see the responses of engineers during product demonstrations as feature after feature exceeds their expectation, and the realization grows that this console is really rather special. It is going to be another exciting show for SSL.”

About the SSL Live console:
Live is all about power and control and is perfectly suited to touring or installation, FOH or monitor systems for venues, arenas, houses of worship and concert halls. Featuring complete flexibility and an intelligent user interface, it is especially ideal for any situation in which audio quality is important.

Based on SSL’s new Tempest processing platform, Live is deployed in a uniquely versatile way. The headline numbers are as impressive as the price, with 976 inputs and outputs and 192 full processing audio paths at 96kHz. How those paths are configured is extremely flexible with power allocated to Channels, Auxes, Stem Groups and Masters, configured to suit the needs of each show. All processing is built into the console surface as well as a collection of I/O connectivity built into the frame. A full range of Stagebox I/O connects to the console via MADI, with the potential for larger systems to make use of SSL’s own Blacklight technology that carries up to 256 channels of bi-directional audio and control via a single fibre connection.

Console power is really nothing if it can’t be controlled and Live offers a truly excellent control surface. It combines a tablet-style multi-gesture touch screen with elegant hardware ergonomics, excellent visual feedback and a collection of innovative new features. It enables engineers to work exactly how they work today, whether they prefer new touch screen or classic hardware technology, or a combination of both, and offers new and better ways of doing things that will make the operator’s life less stressful and more creative.

Being an SSL, Live has legendary audio performance as standard. Impeccable audio quality is a primary design feature from studio-grade SuperAnalogue™ mic preamps, 24bit/96kHz A/D D/A conversion, to 64bit internal processing and 96kHz operation throughout. An obsession with quality also shines through an array of Live’s channel processing tools that bear the classic SSL tone, but bring a completely new level of precision, flexibility and usability. Live features an impressive collection of 30 new effects and audio analysis tools that take SSL’s acclaimed studio-grade processing and re-crafts it for live, with the additional benefit of giving the effects and analysis tools its own dedicated processing power.

As has been the case so many times in the last few decades, SSL has taken a new approach to the way professional engineers work and created an inspired console that builds upon the way things are done today while offering the potential for a new, exciting and more creative way to work tomorrow.

Live is now shipping.

DPA Microphones Makes Some Noise at the 2014 NAMM Show

Company to feature its latest “d:” branded mic offerings and host performances by SHEL

ANAHEIM, JANUARY 8, 2014 – Folk pop band SHEL will once again be the headlining act for DPA Microphones at the 2014 NAMM Show (Booth 7119). Longtime fans of the company, SHEL is made up of four sisters (Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza Holbrook) who will perform using DPA’s d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Mics and d:facto™ II Vocal Microphones equipped with a variety of adapters. Additionally, the company is announcing a full product “d:” branding, which includes the absorption of the current 4060, 4071, 4080 and 4090 Miniature Mics into the d:screet™ Miniature Microphones group and the addition of the ever-popular 4066 and 4088 Miniature Headsets to the d:fine™ Headset Microphone category.

In addition to watching full performances from the group, attendees will have the unique opportunity to hear the true quality of the mics employed in SHEL’s setup at personal listening stations located throughout the DPA Microphones booth. Hailing from the artistic community of Fort Collins, Colorado, these classically trained musicians blend classical music with pop elements for an eccentric sound that is youthful and upbeat, yet highly emotive.

Announced at DPA Microphones’ recent Partner Conference, the unveiling of the new d:screet Miniature Microphone name is another step in the company’s plans for full “d:” branding. With the company’s 4080 Miniature Cardioid Lavalier, 4060 Miniature Omni-series and 4090/91 Recording/Measuring Microphones and the new 4098 Podium Microphones now part of the d:screet line, customers have the ultimate set of solutions.

“A few years ago, we decided to change the names of our new products to make them more recognizable and easy to remember,” says Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones. “In the past, our products were branded with numbers, which were difficult to understand and remember unless you were a DPA aficionado. We wanted names that were more meaningful and more interesting, so we found words starting with the letter ‘d’ that fit the significance to the ‘d:’ (colon) branding. Starting product lines with a ‘d’ makes it easier for fans to remember what they are using as it connects the mics to the DPA name. We also felt that leaving out the second letter gave it a graphic element that worked well with our new DPA design.”
Created for use with wireless systems in theater, television and close-miked instrument applications, the d:screet 4060 omni capsule is highly unobtrusive, which lends itself to an exceedingly accurate omnidirectional pattern, while the d:screet 4080 cardioid is acoustically pre-equalized and well suited for broadcast, conference and other live performances in the studio or in the field. The DPA d:screet 4090 is a high-quality omnidirectional condenser microphone with a uniquely natural and open sound, that is suitable for instrument miking applications in the studio, on stage or for system alignment.
Also on display is the company’s d:dicate Recording Microphone line, which combines the company’s best new and existing capsules and preamplifiers to deliver superior sound across many applications where the microphones have not been widely used before, such as live sound applications for touring and installation purposes. Included in the range are the new modular MMC4018 Supercardioid Capsule and the well-known MMC4007 High-SPL Omnidirectional Capsule, now re-launched for modular use.

Rounding out the d:dicate line are microphones from the familiar and well-loved DPA former Reference Standard series, including the modular 4000 and 2000 Series. All of the d:dicate capsules can be combined with the company’s state-of-the-art preamps, including the A, which is a Class A transformerless design; the B, a low cut and high boost filter version; the compact C option for visual unobtrusive miking; and the new modular active MMP-E cable for hanging or table applications. An MMP-F modular boom pole is available for podium or floor stand use of the d:dicate capsules.

In addition to the 4066 and 4088 Headset Microphones, which are available as both classic and d:fine options, users will have a chance to check out the d:facto II Vocal Microphone and d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones.

Christie and Corning Showcasing Video Wall Custom Display Solution with Durable Corning® Gorilla® Glass Cover Solution at CES 2014

Christie’s high performing, versatile ultra-narrow bezel LCD flat panels, with optically bonded Corning® Gorilla® Glass, will be on display at the Corning Incorporated booth (#11612) at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, January 7-10, 2014. Designed for tiled video wall installations, the Christie LCD flat panels, available in sizes 46 or 55 inches, deliver crisp, detailed images and high brightness with full HD resolution for retail environments, museums, universities, broadcast and monitoring applications such as control rooms and security and surveillance.

Christie FHD461-X Flat Panel

The 2-unit wide by 2-unit high Christie FHD461-X flat panels, customized with optically-clear Gorilla Glass, create an unprecedented level of durability for applications where interactivity and damage resistance are paramount. Corning’s thin, lightweight chemically-strengthened glass solution retains the LCD flat panel’s sleek, narrow-bezel design that empowers a wide variety of tiled video-wall applications. A variety of content will be shown to demonstrate the flat panels’ dynamic visual capabilities as well as Corning Gorilla Glass’ durable, scratch-resistant abilities.

“Corning Gorilla Glass provides an innovative solution for digital signage applications due to the thin profile and optical clarity of the glass, making it an ideal cover solution to pair with direct bonding,” said David Loeber, business director of Corning Large Cover Glass. “Directly bonding Gorilla Glass to the LCD panel gives the display superior protection in high-traffic public spaces and it is ideal for touchscreen applications.”

“We continue to work with Corning to offer custom solutions and are pleased to partner with them to display the flat panel and Gorilla Glass option at CES,” said Sean James, vice president, Managed Services for Christie.

Recognized for its collaborative consulting and system design abilities, which also include installation, 24/7 remote monitoring, phone support, preventative maintenance and onsite emergency service of displays, Christie’s Managed Services works with a national dealer network to offer bundling options and customized digital signage solutions to meet customers’ goals.

JVC Announces Rugged, All-Weather Camcorders

LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2014 – JVC injects action into the camcorder market with the introduction of a line of rugged, weather-proof Everio models that allow video to be shot in most any weather and offer opportunities for creating unique videos that can’t easily be captured with a smartphone or traditional camcorder. The new models also feature an internal, long-life battery – 4.5 hours on a single charge – for even more versatility.

The two new JVC Everio camcorders, the GZ-R70 and GZ-R10, feature JVC’s Quad-Proof structure – water resistance to a depth of 5m/16.4ft, the ability to withstand a drop from 1.5m/4.9ft, as well as dust-proof and freeze-proof down to –10˚C/14˚F – packaged in a familiar camcorder form factor.

The new line offers a combination of performance capabilities and innovative features for those who want to take their videos beyond what a smartphone or other camcorders can deliver. In addition to their weather- and shock-proof attributes, JVC’s new Everio camcorders feature a 40x optical zoom, 2.5 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, audio that zooms with the picture, and compatibility with third-party editing software, including iMovie and Final Cut Pro X.

The new Everio line’s Quad-Poof technologies were first offered in JVC’s ADIXXION action cameras, designed for shooting point-of-view action video. Bringing the technology to the Everio series means that all kinds of videos can be created under a wide range of weather conditions. There’s even the “oops-proof” factor – no need to worry if the camcorder is accidently dropped onto the ground or even into a pool. Contributing to the camcorders’ IPX8 certified water resistance and IP5X dust resistance is the internal high-capacity battery, which eliminates the risk of damaging the camera while changing batteries in bad weather. Moreover, Everio is compatible with third-party portable batteries (the type used with smartphones for emergency charging). Video can be shot while charging to go beyond the internal battery’s 4.5 hours, or Quick Charge for one hour and add an extra 1.3 hours of recording time if the portable battery current is over 1.0A.

The definitive advantage that Everio camcorders offer over smartphones is quality optics. Everio is equipped with a large-caliber KONICA MINOLTA HD LENS with high-quality 40x Optical Zoom. With 60x Dynamic Zoom, the 2.5M Back-illuminated CMOS Image Sensor maintains the picture’s HD resolution even when exceeding the optical zoom range. And the JVC FALCONBRID engine provides efficient video and audio processing to deliver beautiful images and sound. Adding to audio quality is JVC K2 Technology applied during recording for effective sound restoration during playback. Outdoors, gusts of wind won’t spoil the soundtrack thanks to an original algorithm that effectively attenuates wind noise picked up at the mic.

The two new JVC Everio camcorders are differentiated by internal memory capacity, a built-in LED light is included in the GZ-R70, and the GZ-R10 is available in black, blue and red. They will be available at the following prices:

GZ-R70: $499.95 (Available April 2014)
GZ-R10: $399.95 (Available March 2014)

Funky Junk Takes On UK Distribution For Sandhill Audio

Funky Junk, Europe’s leading supplier of new and refurbished professional recording equipment and services, has been appointed exclusive UK distributor by Finnish microphone manufacturer Sandhill Audio.

Established in 2008 by sound engineers Riku Pasanen, Petteri Taponen and Sammy Roiha, Sandhill Audio launched its first product in 2011 – the 6011A ribbon microphone.

“We’re continuously working on new designs and prototypes and eventually the range will grow,” says co-founder Petteri Taponen. “However, any product we release has to justify its existence. We will not put out anything just to have more items in the catalogue.”

Taponen adds that Funky Junk was chosen to handle Sandhill’s UK distribution because it has a strong reputation for handling innovative pro audio products.

“Funky Junk’s catalogue is exceptional and, being a high-end studio microphone, the Sandhill 6011A fitted nicely into their product range,” Taponen says. “I was also really impressed with Mark Thomson (Funky Junk’s Managing Director), who sent me a long email in response to my initial enquiry even though he was on holiday in Italy at the time. His straightforward way of communicating suited our approach to doing business and it also helped that the company came highly recommended by a number of our contacts.”

Sandhill Audio’s 6011A Ribbon Microphone is designed to sound exceptional while being free of the usual limitations of ribbon microphone technology. Although primarily designed for high end studio applications, the microphone is sufficiently versatile that it can also be used in live environments.

Mark Thompson, Managing Director of Funky Junk, adds: “The guys at Sandhill have achieved the seemingly impossible; they’ve designed a microphone that retains the airy warmth of the best ribbon mics with a rugged construction capable of coping with a kick drum, a jumbo jet or a producer screaming at a tape op. The Sandhill 6011A isn’t cheap, but great performances demand great microphones. We carry demo stock for discerning tests.”

ASHLY AUDIO’S NETWORK MATRIX PROCESSOR AND AMP SIMPLIFY USER CONTROL DURING STRESSFUL TIMES AT MICHIGAN FUNERAL HOMES

ROYAL OAKS, MICHIGAN: A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Directors have been serving families in suburban Detroit, Michigan for nearly a century. The family-owned business has maintained a commitment to serving the bereaved and the community as a whole through counseling, grief recovery groups, and other educational programs, earning A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Directors multiple Pursuit of Excellence awards from the National Funeral Directors Association and induction into the association’s Hall of Excellence. This is not a firm that operates by half measures, and so the small frustrations that accumulated from their sound system at the Royal Oaks location motivated them to hire Abel Electronics of St. Clair Shores, Michigan to build a state-of-the-art sound reinforcement system with intuitive operator controls. Now, an Ashly Audio ne24.24M matrix processor, a ne4250.70 multi-channel amplifier, and (critically) three WR-5 programmable remote controls give the funeral home robust, easy-to-use sound reinforcement.

“They used to have to go into the equipment closet to select input sources or change the gain for music or microphone inputs,” explained Mark Monarch, owner of Abel Electronics. “Different people would be in there, and none of them were necessarily technically inclined. It was easy for the gain structure to get messed up.” With an improper gain structure, of course, the sound quality wasn’t commensurate with the caliber of service that Desmond is known for. In addition, the sound system was old and ready for replacement. With Ashly’s modern user control solutions, Abel Electronics could robustly and inexpensively supply each of the home’s three visitation rooms with its own customized control.

At its heart, the new system consists of an Ashly ne24.24M processor outfitted with eight inputs and four outputs paired with a four-channel Ashly ne4250.70 amplifier. The amplifier delivers 250W per channel to new 70-volt SoundTube in-ceiling loudspeakers. In addition, a Marantz USB recorder allows loved ones to record a funeral service. Four new AudioTechnica wireless microphones (two handheld and two lavalier) join two existing CD players and two auxiliary inputs (suitable for iPods and the like) on the input side. Perhaps the most important improvement from the user’s perspective is the addition of three Ashly WR-5 programmable remote controls – one for each sub-dividable space. Monarch programmed them to allow appropriate selection of inputs, input volumes, and output volumes. In addition, they allow simple room combining functionality.

“We love working with Ashly equipment,” said Monarch. “It’s easy to use, easy to program, and we have zero problems with it. We have no customer call backs on account of Ashly gear. Once it’s set, it’s set, and the sound quality is excellent. Desmond loves the new user control because no one has to go into the equipment closet anymore. The closet is now under lock and key! They understand the WR-5 and are happy to have all of the relevant controls so accessible.”

ABOUT ASHLY AUDIO Ashly Audio Inc. is recognized as a world leader in the design and manufacturing of high quality & high performance signal processing equipment and power amplification for use in the commercial sound contracting and professional audio markets. The 37-year old company is headquartered in Webster, New York U.S.A.

Symetrix Zone Mix 761 and ARC-WEB Add Functionality, Sound Quality and Smartphone Control to Hampton’s Upscale Dockers Waterside

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: Although it is one of the premier dining and entertainment establishments in the upscale resort villages of the Hamptons, Dockers Waterside went without a fully-integrated professional sound system until only recently. The attractions that draw vacationers, weekenders, and residents to Dockers Waterside include regular live music, two outdoor “living rooms,” three bars, scores of tables that overlook the bay, and, of course, five-star cuisine. Taylor Sound of Holtsville, New York dramatically improved the sound system with a cost-effective and comprehensive Symetrix Zone Mix 761 fixed-architecture processor and the owner and management are enjoying convenient control from their smartphones via Symetrix ARC-WEB.

“Dockers Waterside previously had some amplifiers and music-store-grade analog and digital processors,” explained Bill Taylor, owner of Taylor Sound. “Some of the components had gone bad, but the real motivation for upgrading the system was the owner’s inability to manage the inconsistent levels coming out of his music players. His solution was to try to compress the signal so as to achieve uniform output, but the compression sucked the life out of the music and killed the low end. It just didn’t sound good.” The automatic gain control (AGC) in the Symetrix Zone Mix 761, together with the rest of its processing power, produced vastly better results.

Inputs to the 12-input Zone Mix 761 include an iPod, a Sonos music player system, output from the live music system, and a wireless microphone for parties and other events. Taylor used all six of its outputs to feed six separate zones in Dockers Waterside via three new Crown XLS 1000 amplifiers and the existing loudspeakers. Additional improvements include a collection of AudioTechnica paddle antennas that provide coverage for the wireless microphone throughout the establishment. The owner and management select zone inputs and adjust volumes via Symetrix ARC-WEB, which they access from their smartphones. Staff can also make necessary changes using a hardwired Symetrix ARC-2e wall-mounted, menu-driven remote located near the main bar.

“We got the system up and dialed in very quickly,” said Taylor. “We were able to give Dockers so much more functionality than it had previously. Symetrix’ AGC algorithm is great, and the owner is very pleased with the quality and consistency of the sound now. Being able to hand him ARC-WEB put the installation over the edge. He loves having that kind of convenient, cutting-edge control!”

ABOUT SYMETRIX Symetrix is dedicated to making life sound better. As a world leader in the development and manufacturing of digital audio signal processing (DSP) systems and accessories, Symetrix provides best in class audio management solutions to businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations.
