ROSWELL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FIELD COMES ALIVE WITH DANLEY GENESIS HORNS AND SUBS

Roswell_HS_StadiumROSWELL, NEW MEXICO: For too many years, football fans and supporters of Roswell Independent Schools in Roswell, New Mexico suffered the poor performance of small paging horns that squawked announcements no one could understand and that emitted music no one could feel. It was a sad, uninspiring, and yet not uncommon situation. When money finally became available to make improvements, the school hired local firm J&G Electric to oversee the project. Relatively new to the Pro Audio market, Mike McClain of J&G Electric sought, without bias, the very best sounding system for his client at the most reasonable price. A thorough search turned up Danley Sound Labs, and Roswell Schools now benefit from a pair of Danley GH-60 Genesis Horns for vivid full-range output and a pair of beefy Danley DBH-218 subwoofers for low-frequency support.

“The school gave J&G Electric free reign to choose the best audio system they could, given the constraints of the budget,” explained Noel Darby of DarbyReps (Denver, CO), who represents Danley in the Rocky Mountain Region and who consulted on the design. “They had heard great things about Danley – that Danley’s designs are uniquely efficient, natural sounding, and easy to work with. I’ve been selling loudspeakers for a long time, and I believe Tom Danley’s designs really are amazing. He’s not chasing the same old woofer/tweeter or line array concept.”

Roswell_HS_Scoreboard_SpeakersGiven that the existing light poles are all behind the seating, it didn’t make sense to use a distributed system. Instead, Darby suggested an end-fired system that would split the field down the middle and provide equal coverage to the home and visitor seating. A Xilica XP-2040 2×4 processor handles modest input conditioning and system EQ, and feeds two Danley DSLA 3.3k and two Danley DSLA 6.5k amplifiers. Those amplifiers in turn power two Danley Genesis GH-60 horns and two Danley DBH-218 subwoofers mounted above and behind the scoreboard. The Genesis Horns use Danley’s patent-pending Paraline acoustical technology to gradually attenuate output at lower angles so as to deliver even SPLs to all the seats, near and far.

The install proved to be the largest hurdle to overcome. “With the original site being built in 1968, and seeing numinous additions and upgrades, we had our hands full,” said McClain. Trenching was tedious in order to avoid underground utilities and unknown paths, so we were forced to dig slowly and carefully. When it was all said and done we had over 700 feet of trench at four feet deep. In order to avoid the necessity of repeating the arduous process at a later date a second “spare” conduit was installed. Dealing with the harsh desert heat cooling the equipment was also an issue. To avoid building a structure to hold the equipment, we used a self-contained climate controlled rack to house the amps and processors. Using the assistance of a local fabricator the forty-foot tall structure holding the loudspeakers was built. “After all the sweat and heavy lifting the system worked as designed and as promised.”

Deward Timothy of Utah’s Poll Sound came in for the final tuning, which, by all accounts, didn’t take very long given the natural sound of the GH-60s and the fact that they are true point-source devices. “The school district is amazed at how much output they’re getting,” said McClain. “The coaches are ecstatic! This is a huge leap up for them, and the system will serve them well for a long, long time to come.”

ABOUT DANLEY SOUND LABS Danley Sound Labs is the exclusive home of Tom Danley, one of the most innovative loudspeaker designers in the industry today and recognized worldwide as a pioneer for “outside the box” thinking in professional audio technology.

FSR’s New LITE-IT Enclosed Box Light Named Winner In rAVe’s 2014 Annual Best of InfoComm Awards

Woodland Park, NJ – FSR is proud to announce that its LITE-IT Enclosure Box Light, introduced at this year’s InfoComm 2014 show in Las Vegas, has been named a winner by rAVe [Publications] in its 2014 Annual Best of InfoComm Awards in the category of “Best New AV Accessory.” Winners were revealed following the show, which reports a record high of 37,000-plus attendees from more than 114 countries. After scouring more than 490,000 net square feet of space and visiting with the 947 exhibitors showing new products and technologies, the rAVe team carefully chose the products that they thought were the best and most innovative.

FSR’s new LITE-IT easily provides lighting in floor, wall and ceiling boxes, or anywhere a work light is needed. This little light securely fastens to any ferrous metal surface via a “rare earth” magnetic mounting. A timed circuit automatically turns LITE-IT off after 75 seconds, and its anti-retrigger circuit prevents it from staying on even if the switch is held continuously.

“FSR is proud that our new LITE-IT Enclosure Box Light has not only received a very warm reception from show attendees at this year’s InfoComm show, but that it also gained the attention of the staff from rAVe and won its 2014 Annual Best of InfoComm Award,” said Jan Sandri, FSR president. “While looking to address the needs of our many users in markets ranging from education and houses of worship to corporate and medical, FSR wanted to design a unit that would deliver the same level of outstanding performance for which we are known.”

LITE-IT’s warm 3000K LED color for eye comfort provides over 12 Lumens of light output (20 percent more than a standard PR-2 flashlight bulb), and its super-efficient wide angle dual LED’s furnish a lighting pattern with uniform brightness to very end of battery life. High-quality alkaline batteries are included and pre-installed and provide 4+ years of typical usage from a single pair of batteries (Based on 2 operations per day, 5 days per week, 52 weeks per year).

rAVe [Publications], founded in 1998 by Gary Kayye, is a news organization that provides coverage of the commercial (ProAV) and residential (HomeAV) audiovisual trade industries via e-newsletters, blogs, video, social media, and a variety of other mediums.

Florida Baptist Church Converts (A/D) with Symetrix

OCALA, FLORIDA – AUGUST 2014: The sound system at Trinity Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida is quite sophisticated for a sanctuary that seats approximately 800 congregants. It delivers left-center-right imaging to nearly every seat from multiple loudspeaker positions, including six time-delayed left-center-right zones that cover the areas farthest from the pulpit. This system was installed by Pro Sound & Video in 2004 and although the loudspeakers and amplifiers have held up well, the original DSP processing system that performed the complex routing and filtering did not. Florida-based Pro Sound & Video, Inc. replaced the original processing system with two Symetrix Radius 12×8 Dante™ network audio DSPs and augmented their sixteen combined outputs with two SymNet xOut 12 audio output expansion boxes. All of the units network seamlessly via Dante and replace all of the old analog processing, with plenty of processing power to spare for improvements.

“The system at Trinity Baptist is really nice with almost every seat getting a left-center-right experience,” said Michael Frazee, project manager with Pro Sound & Video. “However, the old processing system was based on a system of five digital processors that were cross wired with analog and AES patches to share various signals between the processors. This worked well for a long time, but one of the main processors went bad, and since the original components are out of production, it became clear that a new system would be required. To say the least, the Symetrix new generation of open architecture, Dante networking processors would afford us a considerable amount of signal handling flexibility to handle the complex processing tasks required for the multi-zone LCR system.”

The required processing includes equalization, distribution, and crossovers for the various speaker zones, which are comprised of the main house system, distributed LCR systems, stage monitors, and additional recording and general distribution mixes. Two Radius 12×8 DSP and two xOut 12 audio output expansion units form one integrated processing network via Dante with 24 inputs and 40 outputs. Programming the system, despite its complexity, was straightforward using Symetrix’ Composer software. “Circumstances in this case necessitated my involvement at the programming level. The Composer software was very predictable, but when I ran into a few snags, I contacted the tech staff at Symetrix, and they were very helpful in resolving programming issues.”

ABOUT SYMETRIX Symetrix is dedicated to making life sound better. As a world leader in the development and manufacturing of digital audio signal processing (DSP) systems and accessories, Symetrix provides best in class audio management solutions to businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations.

Media Group International Helps Sharjah TV Prepare For An HD Future

Leading systems integrator Media Group International has completed a major infrastructure project for Sharjah TV by upgrading the broadcaster’s Avid storage system and redesigning its network infrastructure to enhance day to day operations.

Based in the United Arab Emirates, Sharjah TV celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and has marked this milestone with a switch to High Definition broadcasting. Over coming months the broadcaster will be enhancing its audiences’ viewing experience by offering HD coverage of a wide range of cultural events, all of which tie in with Sharjah’s current status as Islamic Cultural Capital of the Arab region for 2014.

At the heart of Sharjah TV’s HD switch was the Avid upgrade, which was needed to provide additional storage for current production work and to ensure that Sharjah TV was ready for the new format.

His Excellency Dr. Khalid Al Medfa, Director General of Sharjah Media Corporation, commented: “Sharjah TV is committed to technological developments and professionalism. This commitment enhances performance and maintains an approach that is consistent with the ambition of Sharjah in its quest to achieve leadership in various fields. There is no doubt that the transition to High Definition TV broadcast is an important step for Sharjah TV in providing modern and cutting edge coverage. The move sheds light on our unlimited support that will lead to advancements in the media sector and highlights our leadership in this field.”

MGI’s expertise with Avid systems and its ability to provide Avid-trained in-house engineers was a key reason why Sharjah TV chose the company for this task.

Aisha Alzareef, Head of Broadcast IT at Sharjah Media Corporation, says: “MGI worked closely with us to ensure that this complex series of upgrades happened in a smooth and cohesive manner. We had to implement these changes in a very tight timeframe and were impressed that MGI managed the whole process so effortlessly, without any interruptions to our broadcast schedule. We were also grateful to MGI for ensuring that third party software from companies like Vizrt, FlipFactory and DivaArchive was upgraded in line with these changes.”

Commenting on this project, Mohamad Othman, Business Development Manager of MGI, says: “There were a number of challenges to overcome, not least the need to keep Sharjah TV on air throughout. The task was tackled in two phases to ensure that there was no downtime and that we stayed within the specified timeframe and budget.”

The project, which began at the start of 2014, involved upgrading Sharjah TV’s Avid Interplay Central® system and increasing the broadcaster’s storage capacity from 48TB to 768TB. MGI and Avid also redefined and engineered the broadcast workflow to ensure a smooth transition to HD and to provide Sharjah TV with a fully tapeless operation.

Founded by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Sharjah TV comes under the umbrella of the Sharjah Media Corporation (SMC), which also includes the Sharjah Sports Channel, the youth and cultural channel Sharjah TV 2, Sharjah Radio Station and the Sharjah Media Training Centre. Renowned for its ground-breaking approach to technology, it was among the first broadcasters in the region to move from terrestrial to satellite transmission in 1996, and was credited with the title of the Arab Cultural Channel the year after.
