LEVA Offers Courtroom Testimony Seminar for Forensic Video Analysts at Annual Conference

(MIDLOTHIAN, TEX.) – Someone who is skilled at forensic video analysis is not automatically a good expert witness. To help prepare analysts for the witness stand, the Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association (LEVA) will offer a comprehensive seminar during the 2013 LEVA Digital Multimedia Evidence Training Symposium, which runs Sept. 9-13 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Asheville, N.C. With a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and moot courts, “Courtroom Testimony for Forensic Video Analysts” will cover topics that are essential to understanding the role of an expert witness.

Designed to teach experts how to give effective testimony, both in direct and in cross, the three-day seminar will define the role and limits of the expert witness, present keys to effective communication with juries, and offer best practices for delivering testimony. Jonathan W. Hak, Q.C., Crown Prosecutor for Alberta Justice in Alberta, Canada, will teach the course. A major crimes prosecutor, he has been leading and challenging expert testimony for more than 25 years, and has been teaching a variety of courses for police officers and forensic specialists since 1989.

“The courtroom can be a very intimidating place,” Hak explained. “The skills required to be an expert in forensic science are completely different from the skills required to be an expert witness. Understanding the dynamics of courtroom testimony will help an expert to be more comfortable in the witness stand, give better evidence, anticipate lines of questioning, know how to handle difficult cross examination, and stay within proper limits.”

“Courtroom Testimony for Forensic Video Analysts” runs Sept. 9-11 and is open to anyone who testifies in an expert capacity, not just forensic video analysts. The seminar also fulfills the 24-hour Courtroom Training requirement for the LEVA Forensic Video Analyst Certification Program, but enrollment is limited.

LEVA’s 24th annual conference offers a mix of hands-on workshops, case studies, and interactive seminars focused on forensic video and audio technologies, as well as video production and editing tools. Many sessions throughout the five-day conference have limited availability, and pre-registration is required. ‘DiGiCo Master Series: From Power On to Expert’ Seminar Provides Comprehensive Educational Resources To Pro Audio Community

DiGiCo has long been committed to providing comprehensive educational resources and support to the professional audio community. Working in conjunction with its US distributor Group One Limited, it recently launched a series of educational training seminars—DiGiCo’s Master Series: From Power On to Expert—focused on showcasing DiGiCo’s current line of SD Series systems.

Full Sail Live, an award-winning School for Entertainment Media located in Orlando, Florida, hosted the inaugural seminar on April 23-24, 2013, facilitated by DiGiCo/Group One’s top audio trainers, National Sales Manager Matt Larson and Technical Sales & Support Ryan Shelton.

Over 90+ people were in attendance—comprising a diverse group of systems integrators, audio consultants, production companies, houses of worship and performing arts center operators, as well as Full Sail students and faculty. Over the course of two days, they were given in-depth tutorials with the opportunity to get hands-on with virtually all of DiGiCo’s SD Series consoles (SD5, SD Ten, SD11, 3xSD9s, and an SD8). The training covered the gamut from basic system setup and cabling to features and operation, as well as a hardware and software review. DiGiCo’s, new to be launched at Infocomm13, SD software (V621) was showcased on several of the consoles (adding 96KHz capacity for the SD9 and SD11 on Cat5E as well as a offering a new MADI Router for all SD consoles).

Industry veterans Howie Lindeman and Mark Frink were also in attendance to answer questions and to share their real-world, hands-on experience and road stories. Lindeman, who is currently on tour with The Elvis Presley Concert Tour, has mixed in many iconic studios from the Record Plant to the Hit Factory and on tour with Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole and many others. Frink is the former Technical Editor of MIX Magazine and is currently mixing monitors on a DiGiCo SD10 for Grammy awarded artists, the Zac Brown Band.

“Our goal with the new Master Series is to take people wherever they need to go,” explains Shelton, “whether they’re already owners of our consoles or just thinking about investing in one. These hands-on training opportunities will take the intermediate to advanced production engineer deeper into our systems, provide a tool kit to sharpen their mixing skills, offer helpful tips, tricks and shortcuts for using our consoles and impart information as to what sets DiGiCo apart from the competition.”

LEVA Offers Free ‘Video Essentials’ Class for First Responders During Annual Conference

(MIDLOTHIAN, TEX.) – The Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association (LEVA) will provide a free course,“Video Essentials for First Responders,” for attendees of its 2013 LEVA Digital Multimedia Evidence Training Symposium, which runs Sept. 9-13 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Asheville, N.C. The 24th annual conference will also offer a mix of hands-on workshops, case studies, and interactive seminars focused on forensic video and audio technologies, as well as video production and editing tools.

Designed as an introduction to video evidence for law enforcement officials, “Video Essentials for First Responders,” is a daylong session on Sept. 10. The one-day $195 conference fee is waived for guest attendees of the class. “Video Essentials for First Responders” is limited to 90 students, and attendees do not have to be LEVA members to attend either the conference or the free course. Lunch is available for a small fee and will be served in the exhibit hall, where attendees will have free access to the exhibits and be eligible to win door prizes at the end of the day.

“This is a great opportunity for new and returning attendees to receive valuable LEVA training for free,” explained LEVA president Det. Blaine Davison, Norman Oklahoma Police Department. “Law enforcement budgets are tight, and some agencies can’t afford to send their people to get training. We’re hoping that by offering this class for free, it will allow those agencies to send officers or investigators to learn how to deal with surveillance video images, which are the most prolific type of evidence in law enforcement.”

Hands-on workshops will include “Forensic Image and Video Analysis,” a two-day course featuring Amped Software’s Amped Five forensic video enhancement software. Other interactive seminars include “Courtroom Testimony for Forensic Video Analysis” and “Forensic Photography for IAI Forensic Certification.” All conference program sessions can also be used toward LEVA certification.

Experts from Ocean Systems and Digital Audio Corp. will provide training on their video and audio forensic software, respectively, while Adobe will showcase its expansive video production product line. Plus, Future Media Concepts, a leader in digital media training, will offer a number of video production workshops. Other sessions will focus on apps for forensic video analysis, DVR recovery, and the Victoria Stafford abduction.

Draper Offers Projection Screen Material Course at InfoComm

Ambient light. Room size. Projector specs. Content. All of these variables can have an impact on the projected image, and on the selection of the appropriate projection screen material. During InfoComm 2013, Draper Inc. will offer a training course to help.

Draper National AV Consultant Steve Cook will present a basic course on which projection screen materials work best for applications with various lighting conditions, screen sizes and content.

The class will be offered Wednesday, June 12 from 8:30 – 10:00 AM. The session ID for this intermediate level course is MT60, and is worth 1.5 RUs.

Steve Cook has over 30 years in the AV industry with product and applications engineering experience from a variety of manufacturers in the projection industry starting with Kloss Video in 1981. Steve is National AV Consultant Manager at Draper.
