BUENA PARK, Calif.—Housed in the renovated, historic Fenway Theater in Boston, the Berklee Performance Center is the Berklee College of Music’s flagship performance space seating more then 1,200 and counted among Boston’s most prestigious concert halls. Parsons Audio (Wellesley, MA) recently added two new Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Consoles in the performance center for use by student and faculty productions as well as national entertainment.

Berklee has had a long relationship with Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems consoles dating back to 1976 beginning with the Yamaha PM1000, 3K, PM4K, PM1D, PM5D, DM2K, and now the CL Series. A CL5 is positioned at front of house with a second based in Studio BPC located in an area above the theater.

“The BPC looked upon the new CL as the PM1D successor, states Rick Scott, Sales Director, Parsons Audio LLC. Among features that were appealing to the technical team were the networking capabilities of this generation of Yamaha consoles along with its Rupert Neve plug-ins within the Premium Rack and integration with Nuendo Live.” Parsons Audio has provided customer support of the school’s Yamaha consoles since the very beginning.

“We had the Yamaha PM1D for eight years, and wanted to make sure we could stay up-to-date with current, commercially available (and currently supported) technology, states Ed Libeartore, A1 at BPC. We also really wanted to have something with remote iPad control, so we could mix monitors on stage from the FOH console.”

Liberatore said he immediately loved the sound of the preamps and the processing, and quickly became accustomed to having the controls accessible from the touch screen. “Handing an iPad off to a student assistant has been working amazingly well. It lets me concentrate on the house mix and seems to make the performers more comfortable knowing that there is somebody who can listen to the same monitor speaker with them and build a custom mix right on the spot with exactly what they need without ever having to shout to me, standing 50 feet away.”

Studio BPC, which regularly multitrack records many of the performance center concerts, is a teaching lab for live performance location recording classes. The studio is fed from a separate split off the on-stage mic snake box, but also receives a feed from the house Dante network for additional options. “I am really happy with our decision on going with the CL5 console for our live recording studio, states Alejandro Rodriguez, Associate Professor, Music Production and Engineering, Berklee College of Music. The Dante Network is key in the success of our new BPC Studio, and we use Nuendo Live linked to the CL5 as one of our two multi-track systems capable of recording up to 64 channels, receiving independently the outputs of our 64 Grace mic preamps.”

Nine Discounted Sessions of InfoComm’s Networked AV Systems Class to be offered

InfoComm International is collaborating with AMX Europe to provide networked audiovisual systems training to AV professionals. At least 75 students will be able to take InfoComm’s highly regarded Networked AV Systems class at a discounted rate in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom, dramatically raising the number of trained professionals in the region.

The three-day classes will be offered nine times in AMX Training Centres, and will cost €400/£350+VAT for members, €800/£650+VAT, for non-members.

Christie Awarded Aero Simulation Contract to Deliver High Brightness, High Resolution Christie Matrix Simulation Projection Systems to U.S. Marine Corps’ AH-1W Weapons Systems Trainer

Christie® today announced that Aero Simulation Inc. (ASI) awarded Christie the contract to supply the U.S. Marine Corps with projection systems consisting of 12 Christie Matrix StIM™ WQ 1-chip DLP® solid state LED projectors for AH-1W Weapons Systems Trainer (WST) Device 2F136A upgrades. Six display system projectors will be installed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., and six at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS), New River, N.C. in 2015.

Christie Matrix StIM WQ Projector

The U.S. Marine Corps’ project includes the modification and technical refresh of two existing AH-1W WST systems with the replacement of visual display projectors, image generators and visual databases. With the goal of upgrading the system displays and supportability, while reducing lifecycle costs, the modified trainers will help teach pilot and co-pilot cockpit familiarization, engine operation, tactical navigation, and emergency procedures. The trainer supports standalone tactical training, as well as integrated virtual training with other devices. These features let the students practice essential aircraft operations and tactics skills in an environment closely resembling real world scenarios.

The 2F136A WST device comprises several functional systems producing a simulated environment and emulating real world scenarios for AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter aircrews with each trainer consisting of two visual display domes. The training device’s computer systems control two separate training platforms, one housing a Pilot position and the other a Co-pilot/Gunner position. The system provides Pilot and Co-Pilot/Gunner transition weapon systems, integrated crew, and flight proficiency training.

Christie Brio is straight forward and easy to use, no more passing cables and adapters across meeting room tables, installing additional software, rebooting laptops, and apologizing for delayed or bungled presentations during critical debriefs. Christie Brio is a new meeting presentation and collaboration tool enabling meeting participants to share up to five audio and video presentations from their own devices. Brio uses wired or wireless connections to automatically share multiple presentations simultaneously on either one or two meeting room screens. Whether participants use Macs or PCs, iPads or Android tablets, or a Smartphone, presentations can be added to a meeting as needed, with their information showing on that meeting room display in seconds. Digital Projection Appoints Erica Strickland as Training Manager, Americas

Advanced Systems Group Explores 4K Production, Workflow Challenges at Free Annual Workshop

EMERYVILLE, CALIF. – Advanced Systems Group (ASG), a leading West Coast video and film integration firm, will navigate through the growing 4K landscape at its annual workshop, 4K Workflow 2013, on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the New People Cinema at the New People building in San Francisco. The free workshop begins at 10 a.m. and includes lunch.

“4K and other large raster acquisition formats are becoming the new norm for motion picture, episodic television, and high-end commercial production,” said Dave Van Hoy, ASG president. “While these formats are being embraced by content creators, there are multiple ‘flavors’ of 4K from multiple manufacturers, which is creating challenges throughout the production process. 4K Workflow 2013 will help attendees explore their options and manage their 4K file-based workflows.”

The workshop will begin with an overview of 4K cameras, led by veteran director of photography and industry consultant Suny Behar. “The landscape has changed dramatically and so has the approach,” he said. “Every vendor has approached 4K from a different perspective. The big controversy right now is the whole idea of 4K compressed versus 4K uncompressed, and at what point are you actually acquiring less information in 4K than you were back in 2K.”

Jordan Livingston, an independent filmmaker and digital imaging technician serving the Hollywood and Bay Area markets through his company, DIGILOID, will present “DIT: Data Management and On-Set Color Workflows.” His presentation will define the differences between DIT and “media manager” roles, and describe popular on-set color, dailies, and transcoding workflows. He will also examine the subtleties of different file-based workflows for leading camera systems from RED, ARRI, Sony, and Canon.

There are high expectations for 4K to be the next big thing in broadcast, but what will be required for 4K to migrate into a true broadcast HD replacement? Can Ultra HD services refresh the appeal of broadcast against the onslaught expected from on-demand services? Ian Trow, Harmonic senior director of emerging technology and strategy, will address High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and how it will impact the broadcast market. The workshop will also include sessions focused on color correction and post-production workflows.

White Mark Ltd Wins A Major Design Competition

Studio and design consultancy White Mark Ltd has won a major international concept design competition to reconstruct and modernise the recording studios and control rooms at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Poland.

Since 1963, this prestigious university has been headquartered in a five storey building in Warsaw. Originally designed to take into account the requirements of the Sound Engineering department, the building has studios in the basement as well as a concert hall and teaching facilities on the other floors. However, 50 years after its completion, the entire complex now needs significantly updating to bring its functionality in line with current technical and educational requirements.

To ensure that the best team was chosen for the project, the Fryderyk Chopin University held an international competition and encouraged entries from acoustic and architectural companies from around the world. The brief was complex as there were a large number of rooms to take into consideration including two recording studios, an orchestral studio, various editing suites, lecture theatres and a master control room linking all of these facilities together. There was also a requirement to design an Atmos mixing studio, the first of its kind in Poland.

Alan Cundell, Director of White Mark, says: “We approached the competition brief in the same way that we would approach any design brief – with a view to giving the client the best facility possible within the constraints of the budget and the available space. The main issues we faced were optimally configuring the large number of rooms that needed to be included in our submission and ensuring that our technical proposals were both appropriate to the University’s educational requirements and reflected current industry practice. The time frame was very short and we had to pull out all the stops to meet the deadline.”

White Mark’s main competition came from a design consortium consisting of team members from Canada, Poland and Germany. To ensure that the competition was entirely fair, all designs had to be submitted anonymously, identified only by reference numbers, so that no names were visible to the judges.

“The requirement for confidentiality was very stringent,” Alan Cundell adds. “We even had to make sure that everything we sent by FedEx only had reference numbers and no company name, just in case one of the judges saw it.”

Judging was carried out on a percentage basis, with marks allocated in three sections – compliance with guidelines, innovation and feasibility. White Mark’s overall rating was 92% –11% higher than the competition.

The Fryderyk Chopin University is now discussing the on-going project with White Mark as it hopes to start the design and building of its new Sound Engineering department at the beginning of next year.

“Winning the competition was a great achievement and one we are very proud of, but the bigger challenge will come when we start designing for construction,” Alan Cundell adds. “That’s when the hard work really starts!”
