Los Angeles, CA – Westlake Pro, a leading retailer of professional audio, video, broadcast equipment, recording, and live sound equipment, technical services and musical instruments, recently hosted a Mixing Master Class with legendary audio engineer Andrew Scheps. The seminar, which took place at The Village Studios in Los Angeles, was filmed and edited into a video series, with the first of 13 now available for viewing on Westlake Pro’s YouTube channel.

Known for his distinctive mixing style and ability to bring the emotion out of songs, Scheps has engineered and mixed for some of the biggest rock bands in music: Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Audioslave, Linkin Park, Green Day and U2. He’s also worked with icons such as Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond and Iggy Pop, as well as many independent artists.

The Mixing Master Class video series is divided into 13 videos of five to eight minutes in length and cover a wide variety of mixing topics as well as a Q&A session with the audience of around 150 people, most of which are working audio professionals. LIPA Graduate James Mellor Receives The 2014 MPG Prize

This year’s Music Producers Guild Prize has been awarded to James Mellor, confirming him as the most promising student to graduate from The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) Sound Technology degree programme.

Launched in 2010, the MPG Prize gives winning students from LIPA an opportunity to work alongside some of the UK’s top recording professionals. Prominent MPG Awards winners continue to be very supportive of the initiative, which also brings sponsorship opportunities from companies such as Avid and a bursary to help with expenses from PPL.

MPG Chairman Steve Levine and MPG Education Representative Tony Platt presented James Mellor with his prize during LIPA’s annual graduation ceremony, which took place on July 31st, 2014. Also present was LIPA lead patron Sir Paul McCartney.

The aim of the Music Producers Guild Prize is to recognise the student who, in the opinion of his or her tutors, has shown the most exceptional talent, initiative, commitment and consideration to the art of music recording and production.

Jon Thornton, who heads LIPA’s three year BA (Hons) Sound Technology programme, says: “Throughout his time studying with us, but most especially during his final year, James has proven to have that ‘special sauce’ of attributes – technical skill, creative thinking, attention to detail, and an interest in pushing the boundaries of what is achievable. I’m sure that he will make the very most of the opportunities that this award will open up for him.”

James Mellor’s early interest in music led to him experimenting with many different instruments before he finally settled for the guitar and started playing in bands with friends. Studio experiences with these bands gave him a taste for technology and a desire to know how to operate the equipment he found there. He applied to study at LIPA and has since worked with many local bands including Go Fiasco, with whom he has engineered and produced an entire album, Meet My Mystery. This project took eight months to complete and involved recording, producing and mixing 10 tracks in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound.

Mellor has also been helping out at Liverpool-based studio The Motor Museum and was recently appointed house assistant/engineer.

“Over the next few months I hope to develop my skill set further and am honoured to have the opportunity do so by learning directly from industry professionals whom I greatly admire,” he says. “I am extremely grateful to both MPG and LIPA for everything they’ve done to help me grow as a professional and look forward to the next year with great anticipation.”

Commenting on the Prize, Tony Platt says: “Supporting, nurturing and encouraging young engineers and producers is a vital part of what MPG does and very important alongside the work we do under the auspices of JAMES. Gaining qualifications is only a small step on their journey and our aim is to enable standout students to be able to put their accomplishments to work as soon as possible so they can fully engage with the significant contribution that the UK makes to the global music industry.”

Winning the MPG Prize will give James Mellor the chance to develop and explore the recording techniques he has learned at LIPA and make valuable contacts within the professional sound industry. In addition to a one year associate membership to the MPG, Mellor will also have the opportunity to shadow this year’s MPG Producer of the Year winners Alan Moulder & Flood at Assault & Battery Studios. Mellor will also attend an orchestral recording session with Award-winning engineer Haydn Bendall and a mastering session with John Dent, winner of the MPG Mastering Engineer Award 2014. Added to this will be opportunities to shadow Guy Massey, MPG Engineer of the Year 2014, and Dan Cox, MPG Breakthrough Engineer of the Year 2014. Studio experience will be provided by RAK Studios, winner of the MPG Best Studio Award 2014, while Mellor’s technical expertise will be enhanced by a day at Avid’s UK headquarters where he will receive in-depth tuition on Avid’s flagship controller, the ProTools S6.

PPL has offered to contribute towards the cost of Mellor’s travel and accommodation expenses while he is taking up these opportunities, and throughout the year he will be mentored by various MPG members including Steve Levine, Nicky Graham, Tony Platt and Mick Glossop.

Yamaha YCATS Training Moves Toward Future In Networking

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Training Sessions (YCATS) is moving in a new direction with their console training programs. This year, YCATS has created two new console classes in order to eliminate the repetition between the CL, QL, M7CL and LS9 seminars as these consoles share many of the same software features. The new classes will initially be held at HB Live during the first week of August, HB Live is sponsoring a CL/QL Series Essentials Class in North Haven, CT and ATR/Treehouse is sponsoring the same class in Warwick, RI.

HB Live, a division of HB Communications will host new sessions Tuesday, August 5th between 8:30 – 5:00 pm at 60 Dodge Avenue, North Haven, CT. For more information, call 800-331-1804. Registration details below.

ATR/Treehouse sessions will be held Thursday, August 7th between 8:30 am – 5:00 pm at the Ocean State Theater, 1245 Jefferson Blvd, Warwick, RI. Complementary breakfast and lunch will be served. For more info, contact ATR/Treehouse at 401-751-3121. Registration details below.

“The new YCATS training direction will be much for efficient and streamlined for our customers,” states Marc Lopez, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. “We are improving the YCATS programs for networking and acknowledge that our end user customers operate different Yamaha digital consoles from time to time with many common paradigms between the various models that enables us to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our training programs.”

Console Operation – Level 1 is for those with little or no familiarity with Yamaha live sound consoles. Console Operation – Level 2, is more of an intermediate to advanced class designed for those familiar with the basic functions of Yamaha digital consoles. This new training format will allow YCATS more efficiency in terms of customer time. It will also reinforce that the software of Yamaha digital consoles is the same, and a user familiar with one should have no problem operating another. Right now, the largest demand is for training on CL, QL, M7CL and LS9; all sharing similar software.

In addition to the new Console Operation Levels, YCATS is adding “Digital Sound Reinforcement – Dante” and “CL/QL Series Essentials”. “DSR – Dante” is a one-day class covering design and use of Dante networks with Yamaha products as well as several third party products (i.e. Shure ULX-D and Aviom D800). “CL/QL Series Essentials” is a class for those who have been trained on the M7CL and LS9 and covers all new features with the CL and QL consoles and the set up of Dante networks.

For an end user looking for more in depth information on a particular console, YCATS has produced an online video series that can be used as a reference. New videos and webinars are on the docket for later this year.

Prism Sound Assists With Gavin Harrison’s Drum Masterclass

Internationally acclaimed drummer Gavin Harrison who has worked with a wide range of artists including Iggy Pop, Sam Brown and King Crimson, recently held a drum workshop at Ananda Studios in Cambridge, during which he revealed the secrets of creating a great drum take.

Hailed as a unique and inspiring event by those who attended, the workshop focused on the demands of being a session player and how to deliver a great performance, even when under pressure.

After starting the session with some basic coordination exercises, Harrison, explained the drum part in a specific song and described the techniques he would employ to deliver and capture the sound. Afterward, those taking part were given the opportunity to play the drum part on his kit and have it recorded in Logic by Ananda Studio’s engineer Neil Cowlan so that they could review their performance with Harrison.

“The opportunity to play along with Gavin and then have him critique my performance was great,” said drummer Russ Tarly, one of the 24 people who attended. “This is the first time I’ve come across such a hands-on event and it worked really well. I knew I wanted to do it because it was so specialized. I’d love to see more events like this because I’m sure there are plenty of other drummers who would enjoy going through this experience.”

To ensure the highest possible audio quality throughout the recording chain, Ananda’s Neil Cowlan deployed two recently acquired Prism Sound Atlas audio interfaces, which were used to track 9 microphones from the drum kit into Logic.

As the latest addition to Prism Sound’s professional USB interface family, Atlas is aimed squarely at multitrack recording applications. Atlas benefits from Prism Sound’s 27 year history in digital audio processing and interface design and incorporates the company’s latest award-winning CleverClox dual hybrid clocking technology as well as eight of the company’s acclaimed microphone preamplifiers as standard. The Prism sound mic preamps are based on the very successful Orpheus preamps, but are upgraded with 20dB pads now available for all inputs. Atlas offers recording professionals ultimate quality analogue and digital I/O for Mac or Windows PC at sample rates up to 192kHz. In addition to the USB host interface, Atlas also features Prism Sound’s new MDIO interface expansion slot, which was first incorporated into Titan and announced at AES New York in October 2013. Using this miniature expansion slot users can, for example, directly connect to Pro Tools|HDX systems and can also run with Apple and Windows native applications over USB. Other expansion cards are slated for future expansion of computer interface options.

For Gavin Harrison’s workshop, Prism Sound also loaned Ananda Studios a Lyra audio interface for additional monitoring. The microphones used for this project included a Shure SM91 and AKG D12VR for the kick drum; a Shure SM57 (top) and a Beta 57 (bottom) on the snare, an AKG C451 on rack toms and a Shure SM57 on floor toms.

Cowlan says: “The Prism Sound Atlas interfaces performed flawlessly, both during the Gavin Harrison workshop and at a private seven hour session that took place the day before. They are truly amazing AD converters and mic-pre’s that sound fantastic. It is no surprise that Prism Sound units are found in some of the finest recording studios in the world and the fact that we can now offer them, too, gives people another great reason for coming to record here.”

Located in the Cambridgeshire village of Littlington, Ananda Studios is a purpose built facility housed in the old Neve factory. Originally designed by Andy Munro, the studio was once used for R&D purposes and to demonstrate Neve consoles. Today, it is popular with a variety of artists who appreciate the combination of tranquil surroundings, great room acoustics and an extensive equipment list.

“The live room is a fully acoustically designed space that sounds wonderful for anything you can imagine recording. Drums, string quartets, guitars, vocals, percussion – it all sounds great,” Neil Cowlan says. “We also have a large range of microphones, pre-amps, EQ’s and other equipment to cater for almost any project, along with a huge collection of guitar and bass amplifiers including Marshall, Fender, PRS, Orange and Matamp.”

Following on from the success of the drum workshop, Cowlan plans to host similar events at the studio and will be announcing these very soon.

Prism Sound’s sales director Graham Boswell, who attended the workshop with Bernhard Nocker from the company’s sales and marketing team, adds: “We were delighted to be able to support this event by loaning the studio equipment and look forward to working with Neil again in the future.”
