SoundLab Held At USITT With Yamaha Support

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Held at USITT every other year, SoundLab concentrates on free product demonstrations for students, and this year, the conference was devoted to live sound reinforcement. Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. made a key contribution by supplying its latest products set up for the event in the Arena at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

“The idea that Mike Hooker (Head of Sound Design at UC Irvine’s Department of Dramatic Arts) and myself who co-chaired the project together was to provide students with the opportunity to mix live music while being mentored by some of the top people in the field as well as mixing on premium systems, states Erik Alberg, Technical Director for Events and Conferences, Hope College, Holland, Michigan. The ideal system was to be much larger and possibly bigger than students would ever have a chance to mix on with in their own university settings. We came up with a model of having two consoles at FOH and switching the live console from one to the other while bands were performing on stage.”

Alberg said they contacted a lot of manufacturers to see if they were interested in participating. “We needed a console to drive the line array rigs and were thrilled when Yamaha stepped up and offered us not only equipment but the expertise of their staff. Kevin Kimmel, a systems application engineer at Yamaha Commercial Audio was a great help in developing the system layout for FOH and monitor system. We created a network of inputs and consoles that not only worked for the SoundLab mixing events, but also for the special events held at USITT such as the keynote speech and award presentations, along with system demonstrations.”

The console system included three Yamaha CL5 consoles, two at front of house that handled the mixing for the live bands, and one as a monitor console. There was also a CL1 at front of house that switched between the two CL5s and was used for running the special events requirements such as wireless microphones, video feeds, and playback. The whole system was connected via Dante and included Yamaha Rio boxes onstage for inputs and outputs to the mains.

The bands were mixed by students at USITT under the mentoring of Buford Jones and Jim Van Bergen, as well as Kimmel who stepped in for one session and provided invaluable services as monitor engineer for all but one of the bands. Over 70 students had the chance to mix during the event.

“The Yamaha consoles were intrinsic to the success of this year’s SoundLab, says Alberg. They worked well and we had no problems with connectivity or routing thanks to Dante and Yamaha. I was also very impressed with the consoles, their flexibility, and ease of use. Sonically they were great and provided our students with an amazing opportunity. The Yamaha staff was critical to the success of the project. Their patience, understanding, and support were great and a real gift.”

DANLEY SOUND LABS HOSTS TRAINING SESSIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTORS

GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA – APRIL 2014: Danley Sound Labs, manufacturer of innovative loudspeaker and subwoofer solutions for high SPL applications, hosted an ongoing series of training sessions for its growing team of international distributors. Key members of Finnish distributor LF Imports came to Danley’s Gainesville, Georgia headquarters in February, followed in March by members of Singapore distributor The Soundsmith and German distributor Carsten Eichstaedt-BLL-Veranstaltungstechnik. Amptec and DPA Host Microphone Workshop With Balthazar

Belgium rock band Balthazar recently threw open the doors to one of their sound checks so that 45 audio engineers and musicians in Brussels could see how DPA microphones are used during the band’s live shows.

This unique workshop, organised by DPA’s Belgium distributor Amptec, was supported by Balthazar’s Front of House engineer Filip Tanghe who took part in a question and answer session with the invited audience, during which he discussed microphone and mixing techniques.

Dany Meeuwissen, Pro Audio Sales Manager at Amptec, says: “The workshop took place at the Ancienne Belgique concert hall where the band were playing a gig later that evening. After a general introduction to DPA’s microphone technology, the audience was able to listen to the band soundchecking and hear solo examples of the various DPA microphones that they use on stage. These include four d:facto™ Vocal Microphones, two d:dicate™ 4011C Compact Recording Microphones, which are used for overheads, and three d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones, which are used on the snare and floor tom drums.”

Originally from Ghent and Kortrijk, Balthazar is a five-piece rock band that has been receiving fantastic reviews across Europe as the support act for Editors. The band is now touring in its own right and has made DPA microphones an integral part of its tour equipment.

“When it comes to vocal microphones, DPA’s d:facto is my first choice because it has such great resistance to feedback without sacrificing any detail,” says Filip Tanghe. “The sound it produces is very full and rounded, with no harshness at all. I find it incredibly musical.”

Tanghe engineers approximately 130 live gigs a year for Balthazar and now uses DPA microphones all the time. When Balthazar are not touring he works with Belgian singer songwriter Hannelore Bedert, who tours with an 11-piece band consisting of horns, strings, drums, guitars, keyboards and backing vocalists.

“I use DPA microphones for Hannelore’s live gigs as well and they certainly make those set-ups a lot easier,” Tanghe says.

The Music Producers Guild Introduces Mastering Engineers To Broadcast WAV

As the music industry prepares to adopt the Broadcast WAV file format as the best means of embedding ISRC data into future recordings, the Music Producers Guild is hosting an event to highlight the importance of this initiative and give recording professionals the information they need to make it a success.

The event, which is primarily aimed at Mastering engineers, will take place at the Hospital Club in London on the evening of April 9th, 2014. It is sponsored by digital audio workstation manufacturers Magix/Sequioa, Merging/Pyramix and Prism Sound/SADiE, all of whom have recently announced their support for the initiative by backing file exchange between their systems.

Headed by Alchemy Mastering’s Barry Grint, the MPG has led a strident campaign to get Broadcast WAV accepted by the music industry in place of ordinary WAV files, which don’t contain a method for embedding ISRC information. Their efforts have been successful as the boards of both the BPI and AIM have now recommended to their members that this new format be adopted.

“Our event on April 9th is the only opportunity Mastering engineers will have to understand and prepare for this format change,” Barry Grint explains. “Each of our DAW sponsors will demonstrate how the ISRC embedding process fits within their workflow, and how they are working together to ensure seamless exchange of the data between all of the workstations. This is a massive step forward for the industry and we really hope that Mastering engineers and other recording professionals who are interested in ISRC will take the opportunity to come along and learn more.”

Grint adds that the importance of ISRC cannot be understated. ISRC, which stands for International Standard Recording Code, is uniquely allocated to every song recorded. These codes are then registered with royalty payment agencies, thus ensuring that recording artists and copyright holders are properly remunerated for their work when it is played on radio or TV.

Broadcast WAV, the professional WAV format created by the European Broadcasting Union, can carry ISRC information and this is why MPG is so keen to see is adopted by as the de-facto standard for music interchange in the production process.

“The inclusion of ISRC information will remove the need for it to be re-entered and reduce the opportunity for error,” Grint says. “The new system is simple to implement and, once adopted, it will allow ISRC to flow through the whole production chain.”

The MPG’s aim is to establish ISRC as the cornerstone of every aspect of digital asset management, from tracking and reporting through to royalty reporting and song identification. This will give the entire music industry a robust and secure system for identifying tracks, and who had input into their creation, so that it can safeguard the incomes of all artists and copyright owners.

Ultimately, the adoption of BWF as standard will provide a cornerstone for the MPG’s Credit Where Credit is Due campaign, which aims to highlight the woeful lack of credit information within the digital domain.

“Our overall goal is to ensure that all music creators receive proper credit and proper payment for their work, and having an industry-standard technical solution that allows credit information to be included in the metadata is a major step forward in achieving this ambition,” Barry Grint says.

Community Completes New Loudspeaker Test Facility

Designed by Charlie Hughes of Excelsior Audio and operated by Senior Measurement Technician, Hadi Sumoro, the new test facility enables loudspeaker measurements with unprecedented accuracy and precision.

With its indoor location, the new facility makes it possible to control temperature and humidity. It eliminates wind problems and minimizes interference from outside noise sources. This allows Community engineers to accurately measure complex loudspeaker data and to gather polar data in precise 1-degree resolution. Measurements are automated with an ELF robotic rotator system controlled by EASERA™ software.

The new test facility follows in the footsteps of a long tradition of loudspeaker measurements at Community. Community’s first test facility was a 32-foot-high tower built in 1975 on a southeast Pennsylvania hilltop which provided measurements that closely corresponded to

anechoic chamber standards and established Community as an early leader in providing accurate loudspeaker specifications. In 1981, Community built a semi-anechoic room in its factory to manually collect spherical propagation data of loudspeakers using Time Delay Spectrometry (TDS) technology developed by Richard Heyser and Gerald Stanley. In 1994, Community built a new outdoor test facility extending from the third floor of its factory building in Chester. At 40 feet above the ground and with a microphone to loudspeaker distance of 39 feet, this system is still utilized today and uses TDS software to collect far-field and free-space data and to minimize outdoor noise and reflections. The outdoor test system provides the ability to measure low-frequency loudspeakers in near-free-space conditions.

Regarding the new test facility, Community’s Director of Technical Services, Dave Howden said, “Community’s outdoor measurement systems were an important resource for our TAG (Technical Applications Group) group as we worked with systems designers and end users. Now, this new indoor facility provides phase data and other new information for systems designers and will help Community’s engineering team design the next generation of great loudspeakers.”

Avolites Hosts Free Weekly Training Webinars

Manufacturer offers interactive sessions covering Titan Version 7 and Ai Media Server

LONDON — In an effort to provide the very best product support to its current clients and potential customers, Avolites announces its continuing series of free weekly online training sessions. Hosted from the manufacturer’s worldwide headquarters in London, several one-hour GoToMeeting webinars each Thursday cover various topics related to Avolites and Avolites Media products.

DiGiCo Announces 2014 Masters Series Tour Dates

Digital console maker publicizes first five locations of this year’s hands-on training sessions

ATLANTA, Georgia — Having been the digital mixing console choice for many of the world’s top tours and festivals, DiGiCo is certainly no stranger to life on the road. Now, however, the manufacturer is once again poised to take the spotlight on a trek of its very own — the DiGiCo Masters Series Training Tour.

Presented in conjunction with Group One Limited, DiGiCo’s US distributor, the single-day course is designed to provide attendees with plenty of hands-on console time — including multi-track playback to the desk and the ability to mix down to headphones — allowing them to put into practice what they’ve learned throughout the day.

“The idea behind these one-day trainings is to not only give those that attend a great introduction into the DiGiCo mixing environment but also make sure they understand the ins and outs of system configuration and operation,” says Ryan Shelton, sales and support specialist and instructor for Group One. “This is a great opportunity for those interested in what DiGiCo has to offer as a mixing platform as well as those who are familiar with DiGiCo but may simply want to brush up on what’s new.”

Prism Sound Brings Mic To Monitor Back To The USA
