Community Completes New Loudspeaker Test Facility

Hadi Sumoro at Community's New Loudspeaker Test Facility RoomIn keeping with its commitment to accurate and complete loudspeaker technical data, Community has opened a new, state-of-the-art indoor test facility at its factory in Chester, Pennsylvania USA. Designed by Charlie Hughes of Excelsior Audio and operated by Senior Measurement Technician, Hadi Sumoro, the new test facility enables loudspeaker measurements with unprecedented accuracy and precision.

With its indoor location, the new facility makes it possible to control temperature and humidity. It eliminates wind problems and minimizes interference from outside noise sources. This allows Community engineers to accurately measure complex loudspeaker data and to gather polar data in precise 1-degree resolution. Measurements are automated with an ELF robotic rotator system controlled by EASERA™ software.

The new test facility follows in the footsteps of a long tradition of loudspeaker measurements at Community. Community’s first test facility was a 32-foot-high tower built in 1975 on a southeast Pennsylvania hilltop which provided measurements that closely corresponded to

anechoic chamber standards and established Community as an early leader in providing accurate loudspeaker specifications. In 1981, Community built a semi-anechoic room in its factory to manually collect spherical propagation data of loudspeakers using Time Delay Spectrometry (TDS) technology developed by Richard Heyser and Gerald Stanley. In 1994, Community built a new outdoor test facility extending from the third floor of its factory building in Chester. At 40 feet above the ground and with a microphone to loudspeaker distance of 39 feet, this system is still utilized today and uses TDS software to collect far-field and free-space data and to minimize outdoor noise and reflections. The outdoor test system provides the ability to measure low-frequency loudspeakers in near-free-space conditions.

Regarding the new test facility, Community’s Director of Technical Services, Dave Howden said, “Community’s outdoor measurement systems were an important resource for our TAG (Technical Applications Group) group as we worked with systems designers and end users. Now, this new indoor facility provides phase data and other new information for systems designers and will help Community’s engineering team design the next generation of great loudspeakers.”

DiGiCo Announces 2014 Masters Series Tour Dates

Digital console maker publicizes first five locations of this year’s hands-on training sessions

ATLANTA, Georgia — Having been the digital mixing console choice for many of the world’s top tours and festivals, DiGiCo is certainly no stranger to life on the road. Now, however, the manufacturer is once again poised to take the spotlight on a trek of its very own — the DiGiCo Masters Series Training Tour.

Presented in conjunction with Group One Limited, DiGiCo’s US distributor, the single-day course is designed to provide attendees with plenty of hands-on console time — including multi-track playback to the desk and the ability to mix down to headphones — allowing them to put into practice what they’ve learned throughout the day.

“The idea behind these one-day trainings is to not only give those that attend a great introduction into the DiGiCo mixing environment but also make sure they understand the ins and outs of system configuration and operation,” says Ryan Shelton, sales and support specialist and instructor for Group One. “This is a great opportunity for those interested in what DiGiCo has to offer as a mixing platform as well as those who are familiar with DiGiCo but may simply want to brush up on what’s new.”

DiGiCo’s first two training tour dates of 2014 will take place in Atlanta on March 19 and 20, followed over the next couple of months with stops in St. Louis (April 22, 23), Chicago (April 29, 30), Phoenix (May 13, 14) and Denver (May 20, 21). Additional cities and dates will be announced soon.

Although there is no cost to attend the DiGiCo Masters Series training sessions, reservations are limited to ensure that all attendees are able to spend sufficient time on the desks. Complimentary lunch will also be provided. For more information and to reserve a seat for one of the upcoming dates, please visit DiGiCo’s Masters Series Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/digicomastersseries

Christie 3D Visualization Solutions Chosen for Virtual Construction Simulation at Toronto’s George Brown College BIM Lab

One of Canada’s largest and most diverse colleges, Toronto’s George Brown College, chose Christie’s visualization solutions for its Building Information Modeling (BIM) Lab in the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies (CCET), at the Casa Loma campus. Students, industry professionals and business partners can use the BIM Lab to create digital 3D models and view them on a custom Christie-designed display solution, powered by three 120Hz stereoscopic 3D DLP® Christie Mirage WU7K-M projectors. The new immersive simulation space supports the College’s mission for continued innovation, enhanced practical and theoretical teaching and learning, as well as staying ahead of trends and technology in the construction industry.

BIM is a global term referring to a technology process where collaboration and knowledge sharing takes place, but when the creation of a simulated virtual reality exists, stakeholders can visualize facilities, operational issues, designs and construction. George Brown College understands that using the latest technology can facilitate learning and prepare their students for the future. Clint Kissoon, chair of CCET’s School of Architectural Studies and the Angelo Del Zotto Construction Management, said, “After detailed benchmarking, several meetings and seeing firsthand the Christie CAVE™ installed at Pennsylvania State University, we knew that a BIM lab was the way of the future, and that the Christie solution was the direction we wanted to take to create a fully immersive environment. The lab will advance skills today and in the future and fill a skills gap in the construction industry.”

Kissoon added: “Christie’s proposal came in within scope, budget and procedural requirements to enable us to conform to the Federal Economic Development Agency’s procurement processes and receive the grant for the project. The help we got from Christie really put us in the position to get what we wanted.”

Christie’s advanced stereoscopic Mirage WU7K-M projector, with WUXGA resolution at 6,300 ANSI lumens from dual lamps delivers crisp images, vibrant colors, uniform brightness, and with Christie Twist™, the user can control warping and blending so that the image fits any dimension or shape.

“The Christie Mirage M series projectors are compact, highly efficient, and provide a low cost of ownership,” said Zoran Veselic, vice president of Visual Environments, at Christie. “They are the ideal solution for immersive simulation displays like George Brown College’s BIM Lab and other post-secondary institutions that are considering an enhanced learning and training environment through 3D visualization.”

Thought to be a first of its kind at a community college or university in Canada, the state-of-the-art facility provides learning opportunities that will cover all aspects of virtual design and construction — from project procurement to building processes and facility management. According to Pietro Ferrari, professor and coordinator, School of Architectural Studies at George Brown College, “What we’ve done with this screen in the BIM Lab is to position GBC to offer a program of BIM-related courses, including a post-graduate BIM Certificate program, that’s extremely deep and much more extensive than what other institutions are offering across Canada.”

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Housed in the renovated, historic Fenway Theater in Boston, the Berklee Performance Center is the Berklee College of Music’s flagship performance space seating more then 1,200 and counted among Boston’s most prestigious concert halls. Parsons Audio (Wellesley, MA) recently added two new Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Consoles in the performance center for use by student and faculty productions as well as national entertainment.

Berklee has had a long relationship with Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems consoles dating back to 1976 beginning with the Yamaha PM1000, 3K, PM4K, PM1D, PM5D, DM2K, and now the CL Series. A CL5 is positioned at front of house with a second based in Studio BPC located in an area above the theater.

“The BPC looked upon the new CL as the PM1D successor, states Rick Scott, Sales Director, Parsons Audio LLC. Among features that were appealing to the technical team were the networking capabilities of this generation of Yamaha consoles along with its Rupert Neve plug-ins within the Premium Rack and integration with Nuendo Live.” Parsons Audio has provided customer support of the school’s Yamaha consoles since the very beginning.

“We had the Yamaha PM1D for eight years, and wanted to make sure we could stay up-to-date with current, commercially available (and currently supported) technology, states Ed Libeartore, A1 at BPC. We also really wanted to have something with remote iPad control, so we could mix monitors on stage from the FOH console.”

Liberatore said he immediately loved the sound of the preamps and the processing, and quickly became accustomed to having the controls accessible from the touch screen. “Handing an iPad off to a student assistant has been working amazingly well. It lets me concentrate on the house mix and seems to make the performers more comfortable knowing that there is somebody who can listen to the same monitor speaker with them and build a custom mix right on the spot with exactly what they need without ever having to shout to me, standing 50 feet away.”

Studio BPC, which regularly multitrack records many of the performance center concerts, is a teaching lab for live performance location recording classes. The studio is fed from a separate split off the on-stage mic snake box, but also receives a feed from the house Dante network for additional options. “I am really happy with our decision on going with the CL5 console for our live recording studio, states Alejandro Rodriguez, Associate Professor, Music Production and Engineering, Berklee College of Music. The Dante Network is key in the success of our new BPC Studio, and we use Nuendo Live linked to the CL5 as one of our two multi-track systems capable of recording up to 64 channels, receiving independently the outputs of our 64 Grace mic preamps.”
