Visual Unity Confirms its Worldwide Ambitions at IBC 2014

Leading OTT solutions provider Visual Unity will use the IBC 2014 platform (14.F34) to unveil the latest versions of its Award-winning vuMedia™ multiscreen platform and vuEasy™ Online Video Platform.

One of the most important changes will be the introduction of a raft of new languages to vuEasy™’s administrator user interface, including Chinese, Arabic, Spanish and Russian. This significant upgrade broadens vuEasy™’s international appeal and reinforces Visual Unity’s plans to expand sales into new geographic territories.

“Having recently secured an investment of 7.2 million US$ (5.2 million Euros) from 3TS Capital Partners, we are now able to support the growth of an international customer base for both vuMedia™ and vuEasy™,” says Visual Unity’s CEO Tomas Petru. “Our goal is to be the leading provider of OTT and multiscreen solutions and 3TS’s investment is already helping us to achieve this ambition by enabling us focus on product development and reach previously untapped markets.”

Introduced in 2011 and the winner of the 2012 ConnectedWorld.TV Award for the Best Use of Online Video by a Non-Broadcaster, Visual Unity’s flagship vuMedia™ is an end-to-end OTT platform that allows broadcasters and content owners to control how their brand and assets are managed, delivered and monetized in the multiscreen environment. Highly scalable and flexible, vuMedia™ delivers a cutting-edge live viewing experience on the web or any mobile or connected device. vuMedia™ also enables comprehensive Video on Demand services, social network integration and secures the distribution of content – all of which can be deployed into existing workflows and business processes.

In recent months, Visual Unity has upgraded vuMedia™ so that it now features an improved modular architecture and enhanced API integration for faster OTT integration into existing infrastructures. There is also support for Live Time-Shifting so that subscribers can rewind while watching live broadcasts. This user experience is enhanced with the inclusion of a Timeline Thumbnail Preview (vuMedia™ TTP), which makes it faster and easier for consumers to navigate within streamed content.

vuMedia™ is now fully integrated with Visual Unity’s vuEasy™Cloud-based service that allows Enterprise and Media companies to manage and monetize their audio, video and image libraries. vuEasy™ supports live streaming of up to 4K video and allows graphics and other audio and visual material to be associated with video or audio files, for brand promotion or to generate advertising revenue. Quick and easy to use, vuEasy™ alleviates the need for businesses to build an expensive, in-house and resource-intensive media library, by allowing them to publish their content online.

At IBC 2014, Visual Unity will show a new, white label version of vuEasy™ that gives partners the opportunity to sell the product under their own brand by changing the colours and logos on the user interface. Also new is Multi-level account administration, which allows Visual Unity customers to collaborate on OTT projects, share resources or limit access to specific parts of vuEasy™ to dedicated groups. It also allows vuEasy™ to support different re-seller and seller models and relationships.

Alongside support of live streams that can easily be added into an OTT trough, vuEasy™ also allows customers to record their own live events, include them in their content management systems and automatically published them on VoD portals.

Since first launching its vuMedia platform, Visual Unity has supported video delivery to iOS and Android devices. At IBC 2014, the comany will show a new, native application for iOS devices that enables delivery of VoDs that are DRM protected. This upgrade, which supports Widevine DRM in iOS applications, will give end users and even better experience.

Getting crowds closer to the action of ‘Le Tour de France’

Calibre LEDView scalers power big screens for Yorkshire’s fabulous ‘Grand Depart’

While more than 5 million fans lined the roads of Yorkshire for the opening weekend of the 2014 Tour de France, relatively few got close to the action itself. For those who could not, help was at hand in the form of large LED screens powered by LEDView image-scaling technology from Calibre UK.

The key screens were supplied by two companies – Lightmedia and Big TV – both of which specified Calibre’s LEDView530 as their large-display image scaler of choice for the Grand Depart.

Lightmedia supplied 19 LED screens along the route of the two opening stages from Leeds to Harrogate and from York to Sheffield, with many of them acting as the visual centrepiece for official Tour de France fan parks.

Eddie Elliot-Smith, Managing Director at Lightmedia, comments: “We use the Calibre LEDView530s as a key part of our rental-and-staging operation, to scale live broadcast content from TV cameras around the course for display on each and every one of the LED screens we supplied.

“We use Calibre because, quite simply, they are the most reliable solution in the world. Not only have we used them for this year’s Grand Depart, we also relied on them for other high-profile international events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the wedding of Charles and Camilla, the launch of Xbox ONE and, indeed, Calibre’s previous generation of product at the Tour de France the last time it came to Britain in 2007.”

Big TV head technician Simon Woodcock says: “We went down to Yorkshire fresh from Edinburgh Festival and provided LED screens to various areas on the opening weekend, including Skipton, York and Leeds. The new ‘SkyFly’ mobile LED screen wowed crowds and we also provided screens for a number of private events and parties in Yorkshire as well.

“Calibre quality is central to our LED fleet for managing live feeds. The LEDView530 can take anything you throw at it!”

A high-quality LED-optimised scaler-switcher and universal interface for LED screens, the LEDView530 provides best-in-class professional image processing in a compact, affordable 1U format. It features a jog-wheel and LCD display on its for front panel for fast and easy set-up in the field, and boasts a plethora of useful features including colour adjustment of all source types, powerful picture resizing with simple pixel-accurate edge drag-and-drop, and superior scaling, de-interlacing and noise reduction to reduce image flicker and artefacts.

For mixed rental fleet use the scaler also has a Projection mode in which it supports warp mapping and edge blending, as well as geometry correction and general projection scaling functionality as well as a Scaler-Switcher mode for general purpose scaling and scan conversion making it a truly universal device. The LEDView530 also boasts genlock and I/O lock, making it suitable for on-stage or in-camera use at live events.

Pauline Brooksbank, MD at Calibre UK

Pauline Brooksbank, Managing Director, Calibre UK, comments: “As a Yorkshire company ourselves, we were delighted and extremely proud to have supplied LEDView530 units to power so many LED screens along the route of our county’s “Grand Depart”. This unforgettable weekend was not just a celebration of cycling but a unique opportunity for local people to experience a sporting event they had never come so close to before.

“The crowds who lined the route were 20-deep in places but, thanks to Calibre’s Yorkshire-manufactured technology’s ability to take live broadcast feeds and process them for large-screen display simply, reliably and with absolutely no sacrifice in quality, everybody felt that they were part of the action.”

Red TX Joins The Remote Recording Network

Broadcast audio specialist Red TX has joined Europe’s leading live recording initiative Remote Recording Network. Whilst contributing to managing and engineering music and broadcast assignments on a global and cost-effective basis, RRN offers bespoke solutions that cater for all kinds of transmission, recording, mixing, mastering, duplication and publishing.

Remote Recording Network GmbH had last year joined forces with Dutch mobile recording company Eurosound bv and had integrated the German ‘RemoteTaxi’ enterprise to establish the initial ‘Network’.

Peter Brandt, head of Remote Recording Network and a man with over 30 years’ experience of recording and mixing international rock, pop, jazz, and classical artists, says: “Bringing Red TX into RRN will benefit our European customers by giving them access to a fully digital truck based in Europe that can handle high-end surround sound projects, particularly for broadcast.”

Tim Summerhayes, CEO of Red TX, adds: “I have known Peter Brandt for many years and we have worked together on numerous projects in the past. I am very excited by this collaboration because it allows us to utilize our combined technical resources in a very effective way. There is a huge requirement for mobile digital recording facilities in Europe and by joining forces with the Remote Recording Network we can now provide the necessary human and technical resources to meet this demand.”

Red TX has two state of the art recording units, RED 1 and RED 2. Both are equipped with Studer Vista 8 Digital Mixers, PMC 5.1 surround sound monitoring and Pyramix, Pro Tools and Reaper recording systems. They also have extensive racks of outboard equipment and digital effects, and are internally designed to very high acoustic specifications. RED 2, which is the larger of the two units, will be located as required, between the RRN HQ in Germany and Eurosound bv’s base in The Netherlands, while RED 1 will remain at Red TX’s premises in the UK.

“Our model of using international partners to combine resources and equipment is very valid, especially in a world where businesses need to reduce their carbon footprint as much as they can,” Peter Brandt adds: “By tapping into facilities that are already stationed on different continents, we don’t need to transport huge trucks around the globe. Instead we can ‘travel lite’, frequently only needing to transport an engineer, which minimizes travel costs and keeps our carbon footprint to a healthy low. It also means that we can keep our rates very competitive, too.”

Red TX’s RED 2 unit will make its Remote Recording Network debut in June at the Tuckerville Festival in Enschede, The Netherlands. From there it has a busy summer ahead, working at live events and festivals in various countries.

wysiwyg makes light of Macao’s ‘Rhythm of Life’ celebration

The ability of CAST Software’s wysiwyg pre-visualization solution to enable unique creative event ideas – while saving time and money – has been perfectly showcased by The Rhythm Of Life, a majestically colourful multimedia show held in Macao’s ancient city centre.

Commissioned by the Macao Cultural Institute and under the artistic direction of Lebigre & Roger, ‘The Rhythm of Life’ celebrated the Latin heritage of Macao – today a separately administered part of China, but until 1999 a colony of Portugal. Featuring dozens of performers wearing traditional painted faces, the parade was inspired by the great carnival of Viareggio in Tuscany.

“In total this was a three-hour show with around 2,500 cues, all of them controlled by SMPTE, and 1,300 lighting fixtures,” says Alessio de Simone, Lighting and Show Designer at Italy’s Trussdesign.it, which was contracted by Lebigre & Roger to produce the lighting and staging concept for ‘The Rhythm of Life’.

“We used wysiwyg in all phases of the project,” continues de Simone. “We began with the CAD function for our own internal brain-storming, then used the Design function to develop renderings that could be presented to our customers.

“Once the main structure had been approved, we created a Lighting Plot, and finally, once we had received the soundtrack of the show and the choreography, we literally locked ourselves in the blue room in our office where, for about six weeks, we pre-programmed the whole event scene-by-scene.”

De Simone says that wysiwyg’s ability to create moving ‘points of view’ from virtual cameras was invaluable in assessing the detail of light-fixture positioning and programming, as well as the effectiveness of the design as a whole. The final setup, complete with four spectacular automated ‘marionettes’ dancing and soaring up to 9m into the air, was realised in remarkably short order once the Trussdesign.it team had arrived in Macao.

“We placed all the projectors as called-for in our wysiwyg documentation, turned on all the moving heads – and every scene position was exactly as it had been in our pre-visualization. With small adjustments for pan and tilt, gobos and beams were perfect – just like they had appeared in our designs, 10,000km away.”

‘The Rhythm of Life’ was performed in front of 20,000 people and shown on three different Chinese TV channels, to ecstatic ratings and reviews. Yet without wysiwyg, the show might not have gone ahead at all, as monsoon rain swept through Macao in the days prior to the production, effectively halting all on-site programming.

“The rain stopped the job completely,” recalls de Simone. “As every lighting designer knows, when you have outside fixtures you can’t program during the day – only at night. And the rain just didn’t stop. Fortunately, thanks to our pre-visualization with wysiwyg, we had already fixed everything in our control panel.

“On the night of the performance, the sound manager pressed ‘Play’ on his Mac, we watched the SMPTE on our Hogs, sat back, relaxed…and enjoyed the show!”

Bruce Freeman, Chairman, CAST Group, concludes: “wysiwyg users are independent professionals. Whether you design for live theatre, special events, TV/film or Macao, you compete and you must deliver globally. Previz that does not cheat is vital – you must have confidence. This story is a great example of how pros used wysiwyg and the significance of previz as well as the rich graphics that make renderings really virtually real. Another reason wysiwyg’s previz often plays such a big role in special events is that it is “green” – it can save up to 60% of electricity costs because you don’t need to take over the space and run the lighting for the design phase.”

Cinemagic to Digitize National Chain with Christie Cinema Solutions

Cinemagic, a cinema chain focused on building cinemas in towns between 50 and 70 thousand inhabitants of Mexico, and Christie®, the dominant brand in the global digital cinema projection market, today announced the joint digitization of 70 screens currently operated by Cinemagic in Mexico.

Christie will supply an assortment of Christie Solaria® One+ and Christie CP2220 projectors to the Cinemagic complexes, facilitated by Scrabble Entertainment, an international deployment entity whose financing of DCI-compliant digital cinema projector conversions helps all manner of cinemas make the move to digital technology.

“With Christie supplying the highest quality of digital cinema equipment and technical support, Cinemagic will be able to offer to our audience the best quality in cinema projection in each of the cities we serve,” said Roberto Quintero, CEO, Cinemagic.

“Cinemagic is to be commended on its mission to bring cinema to the small communities without entertainment options in Mexico,” said Ernesto Armus, general manager for Christie Mexico. “We are honored to be part of its mission and are committed to supplying Cinemagic with the world’s leading digital projection hardware, software and services.”

Roberto Quintero said, “We are confident that with dedication, effort and together with our strategic partners, we will ensure the growth and consolidation of our project to successfully bring cinema to the small communities of our country.”

Christie to Demo Breakthrough 3D Cinema Technology For Premium Cinema Experiences with Latest ‘6-Primary’ 4K Laser Projector

Christie® today announced upcoming demonstrations of the world’s most advanced laser projection architecture and Dolby® 3D, to be held in the Christie Innovation Theaters throughout CinemaCon 2014 (Caesars Palace, March 24-27) and the National Association of Broadcasters NAB Show® (Las Vegas Convention Center, April 5-10). Christie DLP Cinema® laser projectors using 6-Primary (6P) color laser modules, earmarked for mass production in early 2015, will show how 3D light levels, image uniformity, viewing comfort, and a sense of immersion can be vastly improved, especially when combined with advanced separation technology like Dolby 3D, versus conventional 3D systems found in cinemas around the world today.

“Recent declines in domestic 3D movie attendance are a sign that the novelty is wearing off, with audiences less willing to pay a premium for what is all too often a mediocre experience. The lackluster quality of this experience results from a number of technical limitations with current 3D system architectures, the most serious one being restricted light levels that amount to only 10-30 percent of those levels achieved for 2D presentations,” said Don Shaw, senior director, Product Management, Christie Entertainment Solutions. “Simply put, the movies are too dark, leaving audiences struggling to discern critical details that make up the image in front of them.”

“Christie’s latest laser projection technology, using 6 specific primary colors rather than filtered or polarized broad-spectrum white light, brings dramatically improved 3D efficiency to projection systems, regardless of the size of screen in premium movie theaters,” added Shaw. “We believe that this is the future of 3D cinema projection, that it is right around the corner, and that it will be a key element in boosting 3D box office revenues around the world. Our CinemaCon and NAB Show demonstrations will be the first 6P laser events available to the broad cinema community, from filmmakers to exhibitors, and reaffirms Christie’s 80-year commitment to cinema innovation, rather than ‘moving beyond digital cinema’ as some other industry players have promised.”

At least twice as efficient as today’s best 3D systems, Christie’s 6P laser projectors generate a proprietary mix of photoptically-optimized light wavelengths for each eye directly from the source, in effect eliminating the need for a highly inefficient stage of filtering or polarizing the light as it leaves the projector. The Christie demos will use Dolby® 3D glasses specifically engineered to exactly match the 6 primary laser light wavelengths to yield nearly 90 percent light efficiency. “Their color separation based technique for 3D is well regarded as the gold standard among industry professionals, especially for its true color reproduction, compatibility with low-gain white screens, and superior crosstalk performance – only now it can be part of a system that is tremendously more light efficient,” said Shaw.

“Dolby 3D’s advanced color separation technology is ideally suited for next generation laser projectors,” said Doug Darrow, Senior Vice President, Cinema, Dolby Laboratories. “With extremely high light efficiency, nearly no crosstalk and crisp images with vibrant colors, we believe Dolby 3D combined with laser projection produces the best possible 3D viewing experience for audiences.”

“Having had the opportunity to witness an early 6P laser demo at Christie’s worldwide center for engineering, research and development in Canada, I can confidently state that this is an exciting and important innovation in 3D cinema,“ said Matt Cowan, Co-founder & Senior Technical Advisor at Entertainment Technology Consultants. “I look forward to further refinement of this technology and upcoming installation in premiere theaters around the world.”

Consistent with efforts so far in developing 3-Primary (3P) laser projectors, which Christie sees filling important needs in several, non-cinema industries, Christie laser projectors will provide industry-leading brightness (up to 72,000 Lumens per projector head), wider color gamut capabilities, higher contrast, and dramatically reduced maintenance requirements, resulting in a better experience for all applications. As part of its largest research and development program ever, Christie will continue to develop superior 6P and 3P laser projection solutions for all of its global customers.

Specific to the development of cinema laser projectors, Christie leads the industry in this area, having announced last year that it would supply and install the world’s first commercial laser projection solution for the Seattle Cinerama Theatre, and that it was the first to receive a US FDA approval of variance allowing the sale and installation of laser projectors in movie theaters and other high performance projection venues.
