Christie Interactivity Kit and Christie MicroTiles Let Visitors Curate Their Own Tour at Cleveland Museum of Art

Visitors to the celebrated Cleveland Museum of Art and its Gallery One are engaging with displays and curating their own tours thanks to Christie® MicroTiles® and Christie Interactivity Kit. Blending art and technology as part of an elegant $100 million renovation, Gallery One’s Collection Wall is a 40-foot wide multi-touch screen comprising two 15-units wide by 5-units tall Christie MicroTiles video walls using Christie Interactivity Kit. The 4-unit wide by 3-unit tall “Line and Shape” MicroTiles video wall with another Interactivity Kit is located in Studio Play, Gallery One’s early (childhood) learning zone.

Inspiring visitors and motivating the younger, tech-savvy demographic to explore the museum’s thousands of works including Pablo Picasso masterpieces, the Collection Wall allows up to 16 people to interact simultaneously with the wall using RFID tags on iPad stations. The results they create also suggest further topics of interest. Visitors can personalize and build his or her collection, curating their own tour on the iPad using the museum’s ArtLens app.

The “Line and Shape” wall lets up to three children simultaneously draw lines or shapes. The content management software then finds and displays similar shaped artwork from the museum’s collection, encouraging participants to see shapes in everyday life.

Zenith Systems Finds the Answer with Christie MicroTiles
When Christie MicroTiles debuted, Doug Fortney of Zenith Systems, project integrator, learned how the museum could eliminate the need to replace projector lamps and not worry about color matching even for a display that runs all day. He was particularly interested in their maintenance since he wanted to install a video wall directly into the architecture.

“When I learned from Bob Christopher (Central Regional Manager, Business Products Fixed Install, Christie) you could repair each tile just by removing its screen – that got really interesting because, as an integrator, we’re always thinking about not only building something, but maintaining it. It was very important to come up with a sustainable design. Part of what is so attractive about MicroTiles and Interactivity Kit is the components are modular, not very big, and everything can be repaired quickly. We don’t really have access to the back – so we needed to be able to fix anything from the front,” said Fortney.

“The big things that appealed to us are no lamps to replace, the 65,000-hour half-life of the LEDs, the technology in the MicroTiles that helps them maintain a uniform color across all the tiles, and the great black levels. Trying to make this art look really spectacular requires fantastic black levels and the MicroTiles give us the blacks we want. The art really ‘pops’ on it and adds to that ‘wow’ effect because the black levels are so good.”

Christie Interactivity Kit Completes the Visual Solution
“The other piece that became very important was learning about Christie Interactivity Kit at another trade show – because this wall was going to be interactive. Until that point, we were looking at another product for the touch interface because we needed a very high accuracy performance where you touch a small piece of art and manipulate it,” noted Fortney.

Adding to the experience, Fortney and his team also wrote software that generates a dead zone around the initial touch, preventing accidental touches such as a piece of loose clothing from creating an unintentional result.

Powered by Baanto™ ShadowSense™, the Christie Interactivity Kit adds multi-touch interactivity to any large-format, rectangular digital display. It lets multiple users interact simultaneously with a video wall with the resolution and speed needed to support finger-based gestures such as flicking, pinching, rotating and scrolling. Scalable, and designed in pieces, Christie Interactivity Kit attaches to a video wall perimeter and is configurable into 84 different sizes with no drivers or manual calibration of sensors or cameras required.

Fortney said the displays are becoming the iconic symbol of the gallery, calling them a unique application of technology and a beautiful thing to see. He is not alone. The Cleveland Museum of Art and its Christie MicroTiles/Christie Interactivity Kit digital displays are earning enthusiastic reviews from staff, visitors and media.

“From everybody it has been an ‘Oh wow! This is beautiful.’ No one has seen anything like it,” Fortney concluded. “From a distance, the wall has a real ‘wow factor’ and then a completely different ‘oh wow’ experience when you go up and interact with it because now it is right in your face. Rather than simply a traditional static museum, you have interactivity that helps people see, appreciate, and understand the art that is at the museum. The technology draws this new crowd here and they want to experience it.”

Spahr joins RTW from Sennheiser, where he served as that company’s market development manager. Prior to this, he held sales positions at various companies, including Richard S. In addition, he has spent time as a recording engineer, providing audio engineering and production services to a roster of top-tier record companies and artists, including a Grammy-winning Latin jazz CD with Arturo Sandoval. Spahr holds a Recording Arts Specialized Associate’s Degree from Full Sail University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Barry University.

Having Spahr in place to head up the U.S. sales force will be a key factor in the company’s continued success and future international expansion. With the experience he has gained in different segments of the pro audio market in the U.S. over the past 20 years, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this position. Laser Projection Demonstration Lights Up G.I. Joe: Retaliation at AMC Theatres®’ Burbank 16, Using Christie Technology

Christie®, a global leader in cinema projection, is pleased to present Paramount Pictures’ highly anticipated G.I. JOE: RETALIATION on March 28 at AMC Theatres’ (AMC) Burbank 16’s ETX theatre. Christie is joining forces with AMC using laser projection technology to project the 3D movie at brightness levels of 14 foot lamberts (ft-L) – a “first” in the world of commercial cinema projection – on a 65-foot wide screen. This technology test will last for a two-week period and will be the first time that the average moviegoer will be able to enjoy compelling, immersive 3D images delivered at 2D light levels.

Paramount, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) and Skydance Productions, in association with Hasbro®, will release G.I. JOE: RETALIATION in digital 3D theaters across the U.S. and Canada beginning March 28.

Audiences who attend the AMC Burbank 16 during the laser demonstration will see a 50 percent increase in the typical contrast ratio for 3D on a crystal-clear 4K projector and we’re confident that the average moviegoer will relish this new level of immersive experience.”

Christie Laser-Projection Juggernaut Gaining Speed, Building on Previous Successes
Commenting on the laser projector test, Dr. Shaw said, “This is not the first time that Christie has employed laser technology to stretch the boundaries of digital cinema projection. Last year, Christie also showed select exhibitors in Asia how 72,000 Lumens could be achieved, in a demonstration of our prototype laser projector in Beijing.

“And at IBC 2012 Amsterdam this past September, I was pleased to preface the showing of Hugo 3D – the first CPG (Cameron Pace Group) certified movie – along with noted stereographers, Demetri Portelli and Corey Turner (‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’), which was then projected using Christie’s laser-light projector prototype.”

Christie hosted its first laser projector demo for cinema industry luminaries including Douglas Trumbull, Gordon E. Sawyer Academy Award winner, at its High Frame Rate Summit held in its manufacturing and engineering headquarters in Kitchener, Ontario in April 2012.

Christie Donates Digital Cinema Projector to Gianopulos Family Theater at Wilson-Hanks Family Cultural Center, Saint Sophia Cathedral, California

Christie® has donated a top-of-the-line Christie digital cinema projector to help entertain the local community in the new Gianopulos Family Theater at the Wilson-Hanks Family Cultural Center, Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, California. The theater is the latest addition to the Huffington Center, located in the Byzantine-Latino Quarter of Los Angeles. Christie’s Managed Services team worked with audio-visual innovator BLACKSTAR Engineering to install the Christie Solaria® Series projector and other theater equipment, transforming a basketball court by day into a fully professional movie theater by night.

A Christie CP2230 Digital Cinema Projector Was Donated to Gianopulos Family Theater

A gala dedication ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 17, to unveil the new theater to the community and parishioners of St. Sophia, and to celebrate all of the benefactors involved in the development of this new venue. Christie will also be presented with a plaque that will be affixed to the theater in honor of its contribution to the center.

“Christie is pleased to provide a truly meaningful gift that will assist the church in serving the community,” said Jack Kline, president and COO, Christie. “Movies offer a great medium for telling stories, for sharing education, culture and history, and of course for entertaining. The Christie projector at the Wilson-Hanks Family Cultural Center is an integral part of the church, and we feel it serves an important function because movies are also a great way to bring a community together under one roof to share in a magical experience.”

Movies Bring People Together
A respected community institution, Saint Sophia is a Greek Orthodox Cathedral committed to serving the needs of the people of Los Angeles. Its non-profit entity, the Saint Sophia Foundation, developed the Huffington Center as a dedicated place where community members can gather for celebrations, meetings, performances and special events. Completed in February 2012, the new 53,000 square foot facility brings Los Angeles together in its banquet halls, cultural center, library, museum, basketball court, and more.

But there was one thing missing to fully complete the center as an all encompassing entertainment and events complex – a movie theater that could be used to host community events, pre-release screenings, and various third-party bookings.

BLACKSTAR and Christie’s Managed Services Team install a “Slam Dunk”
BLACKSTAR Engineering worked with Christie’s Managed Services team to install the equipment for a new convertible movie theater for the Center. The installation included a Christie CP2230 digital cinema projector, a Stewart Filmscreen projection screen, and a new sound system – all of which were designed and integrated to fit flawlessly into the architecture of the Huffington Center’s gymnasium.

“The idea to convert the gymnasium into a permanent, fully-functional theater came later, so the end goal was to allow for the gymnasium to host sports activities during the day and screen movies and other digital content in the evening, and to make the transformation with a minimal need for any special technical assistance,” explained Sean James, vice president, Managed Services, Christie. “We had to do more than transform a basketball court, complete with retractable baskets and bleachers, into a dynamic and multipurpose venue. We also had to ensure that the room could be converted with as little effort as possible, and that the theater would entertain an audience with the same degree of quality and comfort as a permanent theater.”

According to Andrew G. Setos, CEO of BLACKSTAR Engineering and the lead designer who worked on the project, BLACKSTAR and Christie had to come up with solutions to overcome a number of technical and design challenges. This included adjusting the location of the retractable basketball supports to allow for enough room for the screen case and designing a projector pedestal that would keep the light path above the audience.

“The transformation of the venue required acoustic, electrical, sound system, projection, and other design disciplines to be brought to bear so that, in the final result, it would not sound and look like ‘a movie screen in a gym’,” said Setos. “Christie Managed Services took my team’s design for the sound and picture aspects of the theater and realized it with top level professionalism. It has been a complete pleasure working with them to achieve this ambitious vision.”

The installation was completed in January 2013 and the Christie DLP® digital cinema projector is now lighting up a 36-foot-wide by 15-foot-high screen in brilliant color and high definition. To convert the theater for screenings and events, the bleachers are retracted, theater flooring is placed over the hardwood court, theater seating is installed, the screen is lowered, and the digital cinema equipment is powered on and ready to go.

“Everyone at the center is extremely happy with the final result and thoroughly impressed with the quality of the exhibition,” said Setos. “With all of the new upgrades, we have developed a truly state-of-the-art facility. This is a no-compromise 3D digital cinema and, when the lights go down, the experience of sound and picture is unsurpassed. This is owed in large part to the exceptional brightness afforded by the Christie projector, which has been a central element to the systems’ performance.”

Time for a Celebration
At the dedication ceremonies on March 17, a screening of the Oscar winning picture, “Life of Pi,” will be shown in 3D to showcase the new abilities of the theater.

New Iconic Digital Signage Lobby Display at Christie Wins Silver DSE Apex Award

Christie® leaves Digital Signage Expo® (DSE) on a high note, with a Silver Apex award under Business, Industry and Government category for its digital signage display of Christie® MicroTiles® in the company’s new West Wing building expansion. The iconic display in its Kitchener, Ontario corporate office intersects technology, architecture and artistic design. Working with Arsenal Media, SRM Architects and rp Visual Solutions, it features sophisticated architectural integration and a unique technology solution to drive the 70Mpx creative canvas created for the company’s Artist-In-Residence Programme and other content development partners.

“Each year, DSE award winners reveal what’s current and evolving in digital signage and mobile media development, deployment and content creation,” stated Sean James, vice president of Managed Services, at Christie. He adds, “To create custom digital signage installations and content that engage consumers and visitors means working collaboratively with experts in various fields who use today’s advanced technology. At the DSE awards ceremonies on February 27, several Christie products were featured in partners’ winning entries. Including Christie’s Silver Apex award for the company’s lobby digital signage, partners collectively took home 10 awards in four categories which included Christie visual display products. GOLD APEX AWARDS – Arts, Entertainment and Recreation
Westfield San Francisco Centre for its “Under the Dome” architectural projection mapping experience created by Obscura Digital, using Christie Roadster S+20K DLP® projectors.

San Francisco Public Utility Commission, for the “Digital Arts Panorama” designed by Obscura Digital, using a Christie® MicroTiles® video wall that stretches 58 feet long and sits atop a superstructure pedestal custom fabricated by rp Visual Solutions. Nathan Houchin, technical director at Obscura Digital commented, “We chose Christie MicroTiles because we didn’t want to sacrifice resolution or be concerned about off-axis viewing and serviceability.”

GOLD APEX AWARDS – Education and Healthcare
University of Waterloo Stratford Campus and its massive three-storey (6.5 feet wide by 30 feet high) Christie MicroTiles’ installation, the tallest in the world, was a collaboration amongst Christie’s Research and Innovation team, Westbury National Show Systems Ltd., and rp Visual Solutions. Christie’s visual technology displays are playing a role in the University’s mission to intersect technology, business and art.

Arsenal Media received a Bronze Apex award for its Fountain of Content, a custom-built structure featuring Christie MicroTiles, LCD, LED, Christie projectors (3D projection mapping) and accessories to control the show and an interactive sensor camera for creating visual effects. And, under the Retail category, Rose & Thistle Media received a Bronze Apex award for its unique holographic window display coined “Inverse Parallax.” As technical supplier, Christie worked with Rose & Thistle Media, Westbury National Show Systems and Dynamix Professional Video Systems to realize Holt Renfrew’s 175th anniversary celebration in Toronto, which featured 700 Christie MicroTiles, Christie HD10K-M projectors and Christie Roadster HD20K-J projectors.

Content Creation Award Winners
The Content Awards, which honor innovative and compelling content created for digital signage in the DOOH networks, were presented to winners in 10 different categories from a field of 70 entrants. Christie’s partner Arsenal Media received a Bronze content award for Christie’s West Wing MicroTiles display, a gold for the Fountain of Content, a silver for Wilfrid Laurier’s 100th anniversary MicroTiles display and a Bronze award for The Discovery Wall, developed with Christie for the American Association of Museums (AAM) showcasing Christie MicroTiles as a digital platform and featuring flash-based content that actively enables users to engage in a multi-zone experience. Obscura Digital won silver for the content on the San Francisco Public Utility Commission’s Digital Arts Panorama display and Rose & Thistle Media won a Gold Content award for the Holt Renfrew 175th anniversary event.

Laemmle Royal Theatre Goes Digital With Christie Projectors

Christie® is providing best-in-class digital projection to the newly-renovated Laemmle Royal Theatre in Santa Monica, bringing 21st century projection to guests and the first boothless cinema within Los Angeles. The conversion to digital was part of an upgrade made throughout the Laemmle chain.

“Being 100 percent digital made the renovation easier as we were able to carve out multiple auditoriums without having to allocate additional space for a projection booth,” said Greg Laemmle, president of the company. “We got back space in the old projection booth which has now been put to other uses. And we also avoided the cost of building new booth space. It’s great to have all the equipment, including our Library Management Server (LMS), as part of the box office. That way, staff can input movie files and set playlists while still being available to customers.”

In addition to digital projection, the newly-restored theater has stadium seating and three screens instead of one, which will allow it to expand its programming and offer more choices to its guests. Prior to the renovation, The Royal was one of the last ‘one screeners’ in the city.

With eight locations and 41 screens throughout Los Angeles, the independent Laemmle chain was started by Laemmle’s grandfather and great-uncle in 1938, and has highlighted the work of independent filmmakers. It also carries mainstream titles such as “Hitchcock” and “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” The Royal re-opened in late December, 2012 with LA’s exclusive engagement of “Amour.” With the conversion of The Royal, a traditional cinema built in the 1920s, the chain is now 100 percent digital.

“We have a long history of working with Christie. We had our share of hiccups during the conversion process, but the Christie team has been very responsive. We truly feel they’ve been our partners in getting the art house scene switched over to digital. They took the time to understand how our world is a little different from the world of major studio exhibitors, and were willing to adjust to come up with a better program,” said Laemmle.

Christie integration partner Southern California Cinetech managed the conversion to digital throughout the chain. Cinetech installed Christie CP2210 and CP2220 projectors from the Christie Solaria® Series digital projectors, and orchestrated the Christie Virtual Print Fee (VPF) financing plan, with Christie’s Managed Services team providing monitoring and maintenance services.

The Christie Solaria Series meets both exhibition and post production studios’ demands for 2D and 3D presentations for feature film and alternative content. With more than 36,000 installations around the world, Christie’s knowledge and experience with digital projection is unmatched in the industry.

Christie Projection Mapping Display Transforms Canada’s Parliament Hill Centre Block into Virtual Storybook

For the fourth consecutive summer Christie® 3-chip DLP® projectors will be lighting up Ottawa’s famed Parliament Hill with a rich and engaging display that attracts more than 250,000 visitors annually . The gripping narrative of Canadian history via the National Capital Commission’s sound and light show, “Mosaika – Canada Through the Eyes of Its People” begins July 10 and ends September 7 this year.

Accompanied by lights, a 5.1 surround system, and audio track produced by Groupe Phaneauf, the four Christie Roadster S+20K and five Christie Roadster HD18K projectors paint a video canvas onto the 472-feet long by 246-feet tall, six story high Parliament Building Centre Block including the iconic Peace Tower in the middle. One portion features a dramatic 3D segment where the entire structure appears to move in and out in 3D space.

A Journey in Three Acts
Act One explores Canadian landscapes and our founding peoples. The journey begins at Canada’s beautiful west coast, then soars eastward, over the Rocky Mountains, through the foothills and prairies, across the Great Lakes, down the St. Lawrence River, into the Atlantic Ocean, and then northeast to modern-day Newfoundland and Labrador. From here, the audience is taken north, passing ice floes and polar bears, into Canada’s Arctic region, where the aurora borealis dances in the velvety night sky. Along the way, the audience discovers the gorgeous mosaic of natural landscapes, flora and fauna that make up Canada’s diverse natural world.

Canada’s founding peoples are also introduced in Act One, and the storyline carries the audience beyond Canada’s Confederation in 1867. ‘Mosaika’ presents how multitudes of people, ideas and voices have combined in a great discussion to create this country.

Act Two presents Canadian achievements. It begins with the railroad — the great iron link that tied the country together and encouraged westward expansion and settlement. Other achievements are explored, in war and in peace, social achievements that helped to create Canada’s rights and freedoms, as well as Canadian achievements in the arts and culture. Great Canadians are encountered, including Agnes Macphail, Tommy Douglas, Terry Fox and many others.

Act Three is a discussion of Canadian values. In the third act of ‘Mosaika,’ Canadians from across the country are seen and heard, discussing what is important to them, what it means to be Canadian, and their hopes for the future. Their encouraging and inspirational words drive ‘Mosaika’ toward its emotional climax.

From History to Projection Mapping Reality with Christie Reliability
Jean-Marc Beauvalet, manager, technical services, National Capital Commission (NCC), said the NCC used two Christie projectors for the predecessor of the current show; however, ‘Mosaika’ was one of its first forays into multi-projector use and projection mapping.

“Because of our experience with them, we were fully confident using the Christie projectors for ‘Mosaika,’” said Beauvalet. “Christie has played an important role in helping us achieve our goals with this presentation – to reflect what Canada and its history are all about.”

“We had used Christie projectors before and were fully confident of their performance – and, as the projectors play such a crucial role, that made everything else easier to deal with. After Moment Factory – the show designer – did a full pixel mapping of the buildings, our biggest challenge was how to repeat the placement of these projectors to ensure a perfect performance every night. The solution they came up with for the projectors that stayed on the hill was to have the projectors on hydraulic lifts with repeatable heights; they have a sensor that stops them at 120 inches so every performance is exact.”

Not only the production itself but also the public and media reaction impresses the NCC.

“The projection mapping creates something magical that people aren’t expecting – they don’t expect to see their Parliament Building transformed into such beautiful colors and delightful imagery. People say, ‘this is incredible. Parisian haute couture came to life in brilliant colors while multiple configurations of 425 Christie® MicroTiles® lit up the windows of the Barneys New York flagship store during the 2012 holiday season. A partnership between The Walt Disney Company, Barneys New York and Christie, the story of this unique collaboration is told in an eight-minute video presented on a 6 by 4 Christie MicroTiles wall. The video features interviews with spokespeople from Disney and Barneys New York, as well as Christie’s Vice President of Managed Services, Sean James. Engaging Speakers on the tradeshow floor
Richard Heslett, senior product manager, Christie, will speak on the topic, “Engaging Your Audience with Large Interactive Media Walls,” on February 28, 12:30 p.m. – 1 p.m., at the DSE 2013 Interactive Technology Theater (end of aisles 400 & 500). The workshop introduces the concept of large interactive media walls and their application in digital signage. It outlines the technology options for creating a large interactive media wall and their pros and cons – all illustrated with real-world case studies on how to engage audiences.

David Guthrie, director, business development, Managed Services, at Christie, will offer a workshop on, “Designing, Deploying and Sustaining a Digital Signage Network,” on February 28, 2 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., in the Digital Signage Workshop Theater (near front aisle 100). At ISE 2013, Analog Way introduced a brand new generation of high-end AV Processors. Based on the new LiveCore platform, the NeXtage 16 and SmartMatriX Ultra include a new optimized User Interface for improved creativity and control. Being web-based, the new Remote Control Software (Web RCS) can be run virtually anywhere on any computing system connected to the Internet: PC, Mac or tablet.

The Web RCS offers a user-friendly graphic interface consisting of 3 independent sections: Setup, Edition and Live.
A Wizard mode leads operators in the setup of the device and the preparation of the show.
With updating snapshots of the connected sources available in the interface, the intuitive dashboard allows operators to fully prepare their shows, and control them live during their events. An innovative Sequences mode in the Live menu allows easy organization of presets through drag and drop. To save time and increase creativity, up to 5 operators per device can connect on the Web RCS and work from different computing systems on different tasks simultaneously. Any operation is seen in real time by all the Web RCS users, thus ensuring effective preparation and monitoring.
