Christie Awes Exhibitors in Beijing with World’s First 72,000 Lumen Laser Projection Demonstration

Christie®, a global leader in cinema projection, fascinated leading exhibitors from Asia Pacific with a demonstration of its prototype laser projector in Beijing today. Short movie clips of 3D content projected on a 20-meter wide by 12-meter high screen were screened at typical 3D brightness levels of 3-4 ft-L and then using the laser projector at 14 ft-L at the theater of Wanda Shi Jin Shan Cinema, leaving the audiences in awe.

“Today’s laser projection demo was fabulous! I’m impressed with the ultra brightness and life-like colors delivered onto the screen,” said Ning Ye, General Manager of Wanda Group.

Presenting at the laser demo event, Dr. Don Shaw, senior director, Product Management, Christie Entertainment Solutions, noted, “Audiences deserve to see the brightest 3D with 14 ft-L on cinema screens. Our demonstration today showed just how truly spectacular a movie maker’s vision can be realized when shown at the highest light levels, making the shared experience more immersive, and, ultimately, driving more cinema ticket sales.”

Dr. Shaw continued, “Some attendees leave 3D movies complaining of headaches, fatigue, and sore eyes. Just like reading a book in low light levels, low brightness on the movie screen is one of the reasons for these complaints. Delivering more lumens to the screen will help address these effects, as will the advent of ‘eye-easy’ high frame rate (HFR) movies.”

Commenting on the laser projector, Dr. Shaw said, “There’s half-a-dozen different ‘forks in the road’ decisions that have to be made when designing a laser-projection system and most manufacturers will take different paths.” He noted that Christie customers have come to expect the best in technology and service from the world’s largest supplier of DLP Cinema® projectors, operating for more than 80 years.

Dr. Shaw also shared with the exhibitors information on Christie® IMB, an integrated media block solution that seamlessly converts and delivers feature-film and alternative content within a secure environment to all of Christie’s 2K and 4K, DCI-compliant Solaria® Series 2 projectors. Following his presentation, the audiences were treated to a demo of Christie IMB showcasing MPEG2 contents.

Christie hosted its first laser projector demo for cinema industry luminaries such as Douglas Trumbull, recent Gordon E. Sawyer Academy Award winner, at its High Frame Rate Summit in April 2012.

At IBC 2012 in Amsterdam in September, Christie gained recognition for the world’s first laser projection of Hugo 3D, a feature-length 3D movie projected at 2D brightness levels. Hugo 3D is the first CPG (Cameron Pace Group) certified movie.

Live from Daryl’s House to Yours with StudioLive

New York State, October 2012…  It’s not easy scoring a hit in today’s busy media landscape. But that’s exactly what singer-songwriter Daryl Hall has done with Live from Daryl’s House, the Webcast-turned-syndicated-TV-show on the Palladia Channel. The show, which Hall started back in 2007, has drawn critical acclaim for its eclectic mix of musical guests and genres; its unscripted, real-life moments; and its powerful, raw musical performances.

Taped at Hall’s house in rural upstate New York, the show has become a favorite among musicians and fans. There’s plenty of shop talk, working out riffs, and even a dinner break as guests hang out in the converted barn that hosts the sessions.

As Hall’s long-time engineer Peter Moshay explains, the show’s authenticity is part of the appeal – there’s nothing contrived about it. “This is really Daryl’shome,” he explains. “We come in and build the set for every show and tear it down afterward.”

Moshay mixes the show live on a PreSonus StudioLive™ 24.4.2 digital console. “Most of what I’m doing during the taping is dealing with monitor mixes,” he says. “Since the StudioLive gives me ten monitor sends, everybody gets their own monitor mix.”

As Moshay observes, the space is pretty cozy. “The room looks a lot bigger on TV than it really is,” he says. “It’s actually pretty cramped. There’s nowhere to really sit down, and once the room is filled with musicians and production people, there’s barely room to walk.”

The StudioLive is set up in an adjacent room but Moshay spends most of his time away from the desk. “I use StudioLive Remote for iPad® to get in position to hear everyone’s wedges.” Each musician also uses QMix™, enabling them to control their own mix. “It took about five minutes for the guys to figure out how to use it, and then everyone was like, ‘don’t ever change this!’ Once we started using the wireless control, there was just no way to ever go back.”

The musicians’ ability to control their monitors is great for the creative flow as well, Moshay explains. “They’re usually working out the arrangements on the fly, and being able to hear each other and communicate is huge. There’s no more shouting across the room.”

Audio is recorded live to multitrack, taking the output of the StudioLive into Alesis HD24XR hard-disk recorders. “It’s old technology but it’s what we started with five years ago,” Moshay explains. “There wasn’t room to set up a computer, and there still isn’t, so I export the tracks to a computer for editing.”

With no acoustic treatment to speak of, and a peaked ceiling that ranges from 15 to 21 feet high, there’s very little in the way of separation. “Everything in the room is wide open, and there’s no way to really duck any of the mics, because it changes the sound,” he explains. “So when I go to mix the recordings, there’s plenty of leakage across the tracks.”

And that, says Moshay, is a big part of the show’s appeal. “It’s kind of a musician’s show. A lot of musicians are familiar with the show’s sound. It sounds real, like you’re live in the room, and that’s what people like. So I do everything I can to tame the levels, but I keep all that leakage in the mix. I want people to feel like they are there in the room with us.”

The StudioLive’s Class A XMAX™ preamps are a solid part of that sound. “Because we have such a wide range of guests, every show is different,” says Moshay. “Some shows they’ll come out rocking pretty hard, other shows we’ll have lower dynamics and more ballads. The StudioLive’s sound is clean and uncolored. It can go from one extreme to the other, and it sounds great no matter what we’re doing with it.”

When the management team at Jack Astor’s Bar and Grill was looking to make their new flagship Toronto location stand out completely from any other restaurant around, they did what they’ve done 15 times in the past, and turned to Advanced, Canada’s leading audio-visual presentation products and solutions specialist, and Jack Astor’s go-to provider for all things AV. Advanced equipped the restaurant with a completely original AV solution that enhances the customer experience and includes an impressive 5-display by 5-display video wall, the largest permanent video wall the company has ever installed inside a restaurant.

Advanced also implemented several strategically placed ‘video wall trees’ throughout the restaurant. These ‘trees’ consist of a metal pipe that goes from the ceiling down to the floor, with each holding two plasma screens, making it so that everybody in the restaurant is able to watch the game at all times.

Adaptive Video Walls and Displays Creates Flyable Video Wall for the Cube Lounge at the Rivers Chicago Casino

Flexible Video Walls Can Be Retracted According to Venue’s Specific Need

CHICAGO, SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 — Adaptive Video Walls and Displays, a division of Adaptive Technologies Group and the premier provider of innovative wall-mountable, floor-standing, interlocking and flyable video wall frames for multiple LCD, LED and plasma monitors, teamed up with SVT, a company that provides design, installation, management and service of turnkey technology solutions in a variety of venues, to create three interlocking video walls for the Cube Lounge at the Rivers Chicago Casino. Cube Lounge, a multimedia sports lounge by day and state-of-the-art nightclub/live-performance space by night, can raise and lower the Adaptive video frames from the ceiling, instantly transforming the space as needed.

When the lounge is being utilized as a sports venue, a two-sided 2X1 video wall, consisting of four 55-inch NEC flat-screen LCD displays, is positioned over the bar area. In the center of the lounge is a two-sided 6X1 video wall that also has 55-inch NEC LCD displays. During live performances, the front stage area houses a complete 4×4 video wall, which consists of sixteen 46-inch NEC ultra-thin bezel LCD displays. This video wall can be configured to exhibit one large image across all the displays or up to sixteen different images. When the venue is in nightclub mode, the entire video wall can then be lifted out of sight.

Adaptive’s precision-machined connecting bars and compression locks link multiple LCD frames together, horizontally and vertically, in both landscape and portrait orientations. Precisely dimensioned mounting frames and LCD monitors are assembled in tiers, and then the completed and locked assembly is flown utilizing a load-rated rigging beam and suspension components. Rigging beams secure to the top and bottom of the video wall for tilting displays, and cam-style compression locks provide seamless alignment between LCDs. Powder-coated alloy steel-welded frames and precision-machined connecting bars provide rugged overhead lifting for nearly any application.

The FS33 IR is already deployed in some of the world’s top training and simulation applications for critical night-time training as well as bright and full-daylight operations.

The 2nd generation solid-state ReaLED illumination engine used in the FS33 IR projector provides users with 50% more light than any other competing LED projector further enhancing eye-limiting resolution. Even in pitch black it’s possible to locate light points from various light sources in the image thanks to its 0-100% light adjustments on the visual RGB display device. The projector’s high quality optics further increases eye-limiting resolution.
