HPA Tech Retreat Celebrates 20 Years of Inquiry and Illumination

Industry Thought Leaders and Technology Mavens Head Back to Palm Springs for Thoughtful Exploration of an Industry in Transition

On Monday, February 17th, the event opens for early registration and a pre-Retreat course titled Physics, Psychophysics, and Vision for Advanced Motion Imaging from Charles Poynton and John Watkinson. Tuesday launches the HPA Tech Retreat, with the HPA Supersession: The New Normal is Anything But, focusing on the impact of new distribution platforms in production and post. Wednesday through Friday mornings feature breakfast roundtables where any industry relevant topic goes. The HPA Demo Room opens on Tuesday with demos and cocktails and is a hotbed of new products and technologies that feature curated and expert-demos which illustrate the latest developments. Wednesday focuses on the consumer experience and impact, and Thursday production and post. The Tech Retreat concludes Friday morning, with highlights and an emphasis on engineering. The entire event features many opportunities for one-on-one discussion with industry innovators, technology experts, business executives and other top professionals.

Mark Schubin, Multiple-Emmy-award-winning SMPTE Fellow has been working in television since 1967, writing about it since 1972, and chairing the HPA Tech Retreat program since 1997, commented on the engaging presentations set for next month. “We are dealing with fundamental changes in the very nature of our industry, from changing methodologies – broadcast, cable, DVD, DVR, for example- to the previously unthinkable, such as giving fans in a stadium access to their own instant replays, letting social media shape programming, and all of those things that lay beyond. This is a challenging but expansive time. For example, at the Tech Retreat, we’ll feature a presentation that may appear to be purely tech-focused and narrow (i.e., new display connections) but it will show how the consumer technology is powerfully driving the professional world. New Videos Detail Proper Way to Remove and Mount a FUJINON Digital Servo Drive and Unique Features of New PL 14-35MM Zoom

Wayne, N.J. – Two new videos from the Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM North America Corporation – one describing the proper way to remove and mount a digital servo drive and the other on the benefits and features of the company’s new Premier PL 14-35mm Cabrio wide-angle zoom [ZK2.5x14] – are now available on Fujifilm’s YouTube Channel.

The FUJINON PL lenses feature an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, making them suitable for use as a standard Cine Style PL lens or as an ENG-Style lens. The digital servo featured on the PL 19-90, the PL 85-300, and the new PL 14-35mm has 16-bit encoding, so operators are assured of accurate lens data output. Removing a servo drive and mounting it are not difficult, but if done incorrectly, the user will not have access to the full range of the servo’s zoom or focus capabilities. The metadata output can also be compromised, if the servo is not installed properly.

The Premier PL 14-35mm zoom is lightweight and comfortable to use with today’s smaller 4K cameras, and has an expanded focal length range to 14-35mm at T2.9, with 200-degree focus rotation. It’s ideal for shooters looking for a lightweight zoom that can be used as a handheld to capture wide angles in tight spaces.

Designed using the latest proprietary optical simulation software, the PL 14-35mm lens offers exceptional optical performance in the center of the image and in the corners of the frame. The digital servo’s 16-bit encoding assures operators that all lens data output—including the position of the zoom, iris, and focus—is extremely accurate. Christie MicroTiles Showing the Dupont Story at Johnston Dupont Innovation Center

Christie® and AVI Systems have created a striking 10-unit wide by 5-units tall Christie® MicroTiles® digital display wall in Johnston, Iowa that impressed those attending the Center’s grand opening June 25. Also known as the Collaboratory, and the twelfth center DuPont has opened globally, the Johnston DuPont Innovation Center provides a unique environment for collaboration among more than 10,000 DuPont scientists and engineers with customers, government officials, academics, and business partners around the world.

The 3,500 square foot space and adjoining collaboration room showcases the latest company technology, applications and products that are designed to meet the world’s biggest challenges, including food security, energy and protection.

AVI Systems and DuPont Choose Christie MicroTiles
The initial idea was to install flat panels but Les Hofland, System Sales Specialist, CTS, AVI Systems, had Christie MicroTiles in mind from the start.

“We showed the 5-high by 1-wide Christie MicroTiles tower we have to some people at the Center about two months before they brought us into this meeting,” said Hofland. “I brought in the DuPont people and one thing they really liked was that on each MicroTiles unit they could pull out the light engine and put a new one in within 15 minutes. They didn’t have to worry about replacing the entire wall.”

Christie and AVI Systems Meet Strict Deadline; Christie MicroTiles Overcome Substantial Ambient Light
Working with McCullough Creative, who produced the corporate videos and other content shown on the Christie MicroTiles, the installation team had a June 22 cutoff date for the opening three days later.

“The room was still under construction so we couldn’t get in there until the last week in May. They wanted the wall up and running a couple weeks ahead of the deadline to give the software designers some play time with the equipment,” said Hofland. “We met the deadline and I was very happy with the information we received for designing the wall. Everything showed up just days after we put the order in; things happened quickly and we were surprised about the fast delivery time. Christie really stepped up to the plate.”

Since they are located against one wall in a large, south facing room with glass windows running almost ceiling to floor, bright sunlight often bathes the Christie MicroTiles.

“Bright, ambient light is a factor but it doesn’t impact the MicroTiles at all,” said Hofland. “The display always looks nice and full without any problems seeing it. Everyone loves the MicroTiles and think it’s the best thing they have ever seen.”

With a much wider color palette than conventional LCD displays, Christie MicroTiles show pure, saturated, accurate colors. The modular display technology can be configured into nearly any shape and size to create a gorgeous digital canvas.

Christie Awarded Aero Simulation Contract to Deliver High Brightness, High Resolution Christie Matrix Simulation Projection Systems to U.S. Marine Corps’ AH-1W Weapons Systems Trainer

Christie® today announced that Aero Simulation Inc. (ASI) awarded Christie the contract to supply the U.S. Marine Corps with projection systems consisting of 12 Christie Matrix StIM™ WQ 1-chip DLP® solid state LED projectors for AH-1W Weapons Systems Trainer (WST) Device 2F136A upgrades. Six display system projectors will be installed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., and six at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS), New River, N.C. in 2015.

The U.S. Marine Corps’ project includes the modification and technical refresh of two existing AH-1W WST systems with the replacement of visual display projectors, image generators and visual databases. With the goal of upgrading the system displays and supportability, while reducing lifecycle costs, the modified trainers will help teach pilot and co-pilot cockpit familiarization, engine operation, tactical navigation, and emergency procedures. The trainer supports standalone tactical training, as well as integrated virtual training with other devices. These features let the students practice essential aircraft operations and tactics skills in an environment closely resembling real world scenarios.

The 2F136A WST device comprises several functional systems producing a simulated environment and emulating real world scenarios for AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter aircrews with each trainer consisting of two visual display domes. The training device’s computer systems control two separate training platforms, one housing a Pilot position and the other a Co-pilot/Gunner position. The system provides Pilot and Co-Pilot/Gunner transition weapon systems, integrated crew, and flight proficiency training.

Christie Digital Projectors Power Immersive MoMA Exhibition

Christie® projectors have been selected by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for their presentation of the exhibition Isaac Julien: Ten Thousand Waves, a moving image installation by the renowned artist and filmmaker on view in the Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium from November 25, 2013 through February 17, 2014. Working with MoMA, Christie partner Michael Andrews Audio Visual Services (MAAVS) selected eight Christie WU14K-M WUXGA DLP® projectors and one Christie HD14K-M 1080 HD DLP® projector to meet the needs of the exhibition and realize the ambitious vision of the artist.

Ten Thousand Waves premiered at the 2010 Sydney Biennial, and has been exhibited internationally to wide acclaim. The original inspiration for the 50-minute presentation was the Morecambe Bay tragedy of 2004, in which 23 Chinese cockle pickers drowned on a flooded sandbank off the coast of northwest England. The Christie projectors will display the installation’s beautifully crafted visuals, which incorporate images of archival footage recorded by a police helicopter the night of the tragedy, accompanied by audio recordings of distress calls from the scene. With this tragedy at the center of the work, Julien poetically interweaves images of contemporary Chinese culture with its ancient myths.

Christie Delivers for MoMA and the Artist
The technology used to present Ten Thousand Waves is essential to its exhibition at MoMA. A total of nine Christie projectors will display the work onto nine doubled-sided screens ranging in sizes from 16 feet wide up to 23 feet wide, all hung at multiple levels and locations throughout the atrium. The exhibition is intended to be viewed not only from ground level, but also from the upper floors, which themselves are at various heights and angles to the display and look down on the space. These multiple perspectives encourage audiences to move through, and interact with, the sights and sounds of the installation from their personal points of view.

Eight Christie WU14K-M projectors light up eight screens of various sizes, while one Christie HD14K-M projector lights up the ninth, and largest, screen. The intricacy of these arrangements required the use of cutting-edge audio-visual display technology to deliver powerful and bright images, as well as crisp and clear sound, to create a large-scale immersive experience. The projectors also had to be exceptionally bright to overcome the challenges of the high ambient light environment.

According to Michael Wright, President of Michael Andrews Audio Visual Services, it was paramount that the state-of-the-art display technology chosen run smoothly and bring all aspects of the installation together to achieve its full visual impact. The Marron Atrium is an expansive, high ceilinged, public space where the museum has less control of ambient light and sound, requiring a technological solution that could overcome these challenges.

“We choose Christie high performance projectors because they offer the most reliability and flexibility, and always deliver the excellence our customers demand in their visual displays,” said Wright. “The installation required full design flexibility, so that they could be arranged to fit the artist’s needs within the atrium space. Since the moving images are projected from challenging angles, the projectors also needed to match the images and colors flawlessly, making the Christie M Series a perfect fit for this project. Working on such a large scale and with so many projectors, the museum used the new Christie InControl™ App to individually control and calibrate every aspect of each projector wirelessly.”

A stunning and captivating projection mapping presentation is the showpiece of the Christie® LDI trade show booth in Las Vegas Nov. 22-24. The colorful and exciting booth features two interactive projection mapping displays including a 6-foot wide by 3-feet tall interactive preview of an upcoming Christie book featuring the most innovative projection mapping projects from around the world.

Producing both engaging projection mapping exhibits is Chile-based Proyección de Ideas (P.I.). The multi-faceted audio visual company has produced over 1,400 events and is renowned for creating gorgeous projection mapping performances throughout both North and South America and, as a Christie partner, will be on hand to discuss how to turn projection mapping dreams into reality. P.I. joined Christie at both LDI 2012 and InfoComm 2013, developing content that played on P.I. servers.

The exhibit uses two Christie HD14K-M 3-chip DLP® projectors controlled by the P.I. Mambo Player media server system. Proyección de Ideas’ Mambo Player will also be controlling another multi-touch screen with images provided by two Christie Roadster HD20K-J 3-chip DLP® projectors. All content is high resolution and attendees can engage with the multi-touch interface.

A second Mambo Player will be controlling the Christie MicroTiles video walls and both the both the Christie YK50 and Christie YK100 projector yokes.

Based on Midra™, the QuickVu (Ref.QVU150) offers a large variety of connectivity, through 8 seamless inputs and 14 source plugs: 4 x Universal Analog, 4 x DVI-D, 4 x HDMI and 2 x 3G-SDI plugs. Thanks to the CleanCut effect, the QuickVu can operate fast and seamlessly switch between any of its 14 input plugs without fade through black or loss of sync. EDID management is now standard for inputs 1 through 6 for computer sources.
To fit any display resolution, including non-standard formats like LED walls and rear-projection cubes, QuickVu offers custom output format management, with a main layer fully resizable and that can be positioned anywhere.
QuickVu provides the ability to modify the Program in real time without using the Preview.

Thanks to the new “Quick Frame” function, a foreground frame, among 8 available, can quickly hide all other layers when necessary. A simple button push allows return to the previous display. For immediate results, the “Quick Frame” is displayed directly on the Program output, without using the Preview. In addition, QuickVu offers 8 presets from the front panel.
The “Keying/Titling” function will be available through the upcoming RK-350 (Ref.RK-350) Keypad.
The QuickVu can easily embed or de-embed digital audio on HDMI and DVI-D connectors on inputs and outputs, ensuring better processing and quality of the video and audio mix.

QuickVu can be controlled through the RCS², a user-friendly graphic interface designed for the Midra™ platform. As an AIR application, the RCS² is compatible with Windows, Mac OS and Linux. It offers 3 main sections to setup and control the QuickVu: Setup, Edit and Live.
QuickVu can also be controlled by the RK-350 Keypad (end of 2013) and the Orchestra Remote Console (1st semester 2014).

It’s a first: TDC wraps Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylons in projection for Australian Naval Spectacular

Achieving the very first projection onto both sides of the epic proportions of Australia’s iconic Sydney Opera House as well as onto the pylons of Sydney Harbour Bridge was by no means a small challenge for any technology company.

Australia was celebrating the first entry of the national Australian fleet into Sydney Harbour one hundred years ago and re-telling the story for The Royal Australian Navy’s International Fleet Review. Imagination Australia was the Creative team and Producer of the event, who engaged Technical Direction Company (TDC) as their video technology partner.

An evening spectacular involved video projection that was combined with stunning fireworks launched from seven warships. There was lighting from 28 land and ship locations plus live action on board ships culminating in an aerial fly past from the Royal Australian Air Force that was enjoyed by the millions lining the foreshore.

“The spectacular was created in seven acts, from introducing Australia’s original fleet, through 100 proud years of service to Australia, current capabilities, a moment of reflection for the fallen and a finale to rival Sydney’s New Year’s Eve,” said Heath Campanaro, Project Director at Imagination Australia. “The show was a once in a lifetime project and will go down in history as one of the most inspiring, moving pieces of creativity at this kind of scale.”

We make it happen

Digital video projection onto both sides of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons was a first. To create such a visual spectacular, TDC worked for months of planning and testing with Imagination Australia to design and realise the brightest projection ever delivered.

TDC deployed a total of 56 Barco projectors including models FLM-HD20, HDF-W26 and HDQ-2K40 that were positioned at great distances and angles, including projection towers located up to 700 metres away from across Sydney Harbour. It was vital to that the projection was visible from all sides of the Harbour – which had not been done before.

TDC ensured that the content created by Imagination Australia was managed using Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image and display software and 26 computer servers. The entire proceedings were synchronised by timecode and transmitted across Sydney Harbour using Reidel MediorNet fibre optic media signal distribution and processing.

“The project took months of planning and days of painstaking projector alignment and positioning to get every pixel lined up and just right across various projectors,” enthused Olin Winton, Technical Manager at TDC.

“Rarely does a project of this epic scale take place in Australia. Our team of projection experts did a great job and we’re very proud of what we’ve delivered,” said Michael Hassett, MD at TDC.
