Shure Sets the Stage at Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza 2008 hosted the long-awaited Chicago return of rap/rock pioneers Rage Against the Machine. Aside from a gig at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI last summer, Rage hasn’t been seen or heard in the metro area proper since a 1999 headlining show at the Allstate Arena. Marked by ripping musical exercises in polemics such as “Testify? and “Guerrilla Radio?, the band’s headlining fury was led by frontman Zack de la Rocha, who relied on a Shure hardwired SM58 to take his message to the streets.Choosing Lollapalooza 2008 to play its first North American gig on the second leg of its summer tour, Radiohead plowed its own path through a sell-out crowd of 75,000 to close out the first night, soothing those in attendance with a mixture of pastoral ambience, slashing guitars, and a mystical light show that seemed to keep threatening storms at bay. Thom Yorke’s vocals and guitar helped guide the two-hour set, with the frontman singing into a Beta 87C from Shure. As in the past, music fans jammed Chicago’s Grant Park for this year’s Lollapalooza, drawing sell-out crowds August 1-3. Seen and heard onstage throughout the event, Shure microphones played a big role at the festival. The photos and captions tell some of the story…
