Award-Winning Gefen Solution Distributes HDMI with USB, RS-232, IR and Audio over a Local Area Network with Option to Create Virtual Matrix Switching Solution

CHATSWORTH, CA – Digital connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced that its HD KVM over IP solution won the AV Technology Best of Show Award at InfoComm 2014.

Gefen’s HD KVM over IP sends 1080p high definition content over a LAN with the option to integrate various video formats and create a virtual, cross-point matrix. The sender/receiver system allows the remote control of computers from any workstation on the LAN when using a Gigabit Ethernet switch. Users access content using a keyboard, video display and mouse (KVM). Video resolutions in the HDMI format up to 1080p, four USB peripherals, bi-directional audio, RS-232 control signals and IR are transported on the LAN with optional extension up to 100 meters on both sender and receiver sides using a single CAT-5 cable. This extension system boasts latency of less than two frames.

One of the best features of this new solution is its ability to support additional sender and receiver units on the same LAN. Each sender and receiver can be automatically or manually configured to a unique IP address to support multiple units. Up to 256 sender and a theoretical limit of just over 65,000 units total can be routed through the LAN, creating a scalable, virtual cross-point matrix with no additional wiring. The HD KVM over IP can also be combined on the same LAN with Gefen’s DVI and VGA KVM over IP extenders. These integrated systems support both analog and digital video in a virtual matrix that sends data to any workstation regardless of the video format. Resolutions are supported up to 1920×1200 at 60 FPS.

Gefen’s HD KVM over IP helps facilities improve performance by increasing remote control options and streamlining equipment. Each system includes a web server interface for easy configuration and setup. Each receiver unit comes equipped with an Ethernet switch and two Ethernet ports for connecting additional computers at the remote location.

The Best of Show designation is awarded to those companies with outstanding products exhibited at InfoComm. Winners were selected by panels of professional users and editors, and on judges’ inspection at the convention.

Christie Donates Projectors and Installation Services to San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts

Christie®, a global leader in visual display solutions, is pleased to announce its donation of high-performance projection technology and installation services to the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in San Diego. Installed by Christie’s Professional Services team, the Christie Solaria® Series® DCI-compliance based system will deliver outstanding digital cinema images via the Solaria One projector, as well as alternative content powered by the Christie SKA-3D cinema processor. The solution replaces a first-generation Christie digital cinema projector. It will light up the 226-seat Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater at the Museum of Photographic Arts, a professional quality, nonprofit theater venue in San Diego. Beloved by the local community, MOPA is host to diverse film festivals and screenings reaching over 10,000 people annually.

Founded in 1983, MOPA has established an international reputation of excellence through its presentation of high quality exhibitions, lectures, publications and films. Its mission is to inspire, educate, and engage broad audiences through the presentation, collection, and preservation of photography, film, and video. MOPA is one of the only museum facilities in the United States dedicated exclusively to lens-based media, with holdings of over 8,000 photographs by 700 artists and a 20,000 volume research library, making it a one-of-a-kind destination for scholars, researchers, and photography and film enthusiasts of all ages.

Museum of Photographic Art - San Diego

Christie’s CEO Jack Kline was inspired by MOPA’s educational role in the community, especially its desire to expand visual literacy for people of all ages. Driven by Christie’s commitment to good corporate citizenship and support of worthy causes in the community, the company’s generous gift will benefit local film festivals, film directors and producers, and community groups, who partner with MOPA to bring important local and international independent films to San Diego’s audiences.

“Community giving has always been a high priority for Christie, especially when it comes to the advancement of education and the arts,” said Kline. “Our acclaimed projection technology will ensure that MOPA will not only continue to be a one-of-a-kind destination for photography, but also serve as a resource where future generations of students can enjoy and appreciate the cinematic arts as well.”

Deborah Klochko, Executive Director at MOPA, said, “When our theater opened in 2001, we selected the finest projection and sound equipment available, including a Christie projector system. After more than a decade of near-constant operation, the current system was still serving the museum, a testament to the outstanding quality of Christie products. When the time came to replace our projector to meet current industry standards, it was only natural that we turned to Christie once again for their remarkable technology and reliability.

“The digital projection capabilities provided by Christie, combined with our ability to project 16mm, 35mm and other specialized formats, make MOPA one of the premier nonprofit venues for cinema in Southern California,” added Klochko.

Christie’s donation was joined with a $20,000 grant from Las Patronas, a philanthropic organization that has donated over $17 million to San Diego organizations since 1946.

The complete projection system includes a state-of-the-art Christie® Solaria® One projector, recognized as the brightest-in-class solution and a Christie SKA-3D cinema processor. The system also includes Christie® Xenolite® lamps, a series of high-quality, long-life lamps to help lower operating costs. Christie’s Professional Services team supplied complete technical support for this project, expertly working with the MOPA team to properly install, integrate, and maintain the site. They skillfully compensated for many spatial challenges typical of larger venues to create the optimum visual experience for museum visitors.

“Installing the equipment for the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Theater involved the same technical and design challenges that many other multi-use facilities experience, where space is at a premium and the ability to project content from a wide variety of sources is paramount,” said Sean James, vice president, Global Professional Services. “The all-in-one nature of the Christie Solaria One projector, with built-in Christie® IMB™ Server, Touch Panel Controller and playlist software, helped meet the space requirements – while also providing a full-featured projection system.”

Shotoku Makes Gains With El Financiero ׀ Bloomberg TV

UNIQUE VR TRACKING SYSTEM DELIVERS AUGMENTED REALITY SOLUTION FOR FINANCIAL NEWS BROADCASTER IN MEXICO CITY

Mexico City – Shotoku Broadcast Systems, a leading international manufacturer of advanced camera support products, has announced the recent installation of its highly regarded Shotoku TK-53LVR Dolly Crane System for a Virtual Studio at El Financiero|Bloomberg TV, a station based in Mexico City that broadcasts, through an alliance with Bloomberg NY, both worldwide and local financial-based programming to Mexico and Central America. The sale was facilitated through long-time Shotoku dealer Comtelsat, based in Mexico City with offices in US, Brazil and Central America, to help the station deliver stunning graphics and visuals to viewers.

According to Ricardo Granada, IT & TV support manager, El Financiero|Bloomberg TV, the station is using the TK-53LVR system, alongside a Vizrt Virtual Studio solution, Grass Valley LDX camera dedicated to the Shotoku system, and a Kayak production switcher, as an augmented reality system, for the graphics and statistics, as well as logos of the station’s sponsors in some sections. It is used for augmented reality and virtual elements matched to the real studio.

“They don’t use a traditional lower third or a bumper to show some sponsored section of the news show,” explains Angélica Elizalde, sales executive and specialist in graphic solutions for Comtelsat. “Instead, they use the logo of the sponsor in augmented reality during the whole section — which is way more spectacular, since the anchor is interacting with the virtual element. Also, the anchors can present statistics and schemes that come out right from the floor of the studio — which is a simpler and more creative way to present the information to the audiences. And those graphics can get sponsored, too.”

“We knew the brand from other installations and knew it was a reliable and very stable system,” says Granada. “We were quite impressed because of the length of the crane and the possibilities it has for live production; and also by the fact that no other vendor has a product with the same quality, accuracy and level of service we are used to receive from Shotoku.”

The Shotoku TK-53LVR Dolly Crane System for Virtual Studio offers a unique set of VR features coupled with a sturdy twin arm structure that provides vibration-free, high performance with a single operator. The VR Dolly Crane System allows any studio to be easily transformed into a virtual environment without the need for targets on the ceiling, floors, or walls, or infrared sensors. Reliable, accurate and immediate VR data, including pan/tilt, zoom, focus and X/Y camera date is sent to the graphic computer via an RS422 cable. A Pan Bar control unit maximizes optimal pan & tilt operation. The TK-53LVR also features Shotoku’s unique SPi-Touch 2 point calibration system for quick set-up.

“We’ve been dealers for Shotoku for a number of years, and we have always preferred the system because of its reliability and accuracy in the mechanical tracking data –it’s just the best,” adds Elizalde. “They can have a 360-degree tracking of virtual elements; the arm of the crane is totally vibration free (no matter the length of it, which is quite large). They can make a very large range of movements without worrying about undesired bumping; plus they just need one operator to manage the whole system (nevertheless, they often use two people just to make sure, but most of the time is just one). Also, unlike some other systems, Shotoku guarantees that there won’t be any delay or loss on the receiving of the mechanical tracking data.”

Granada adds, “I have been a user for a few years, but I never worked with a crane system, so this was a challenge. Nevertheless, the system has proved to be as reliable as all other Shotoku products I know. Once you get to know it, it is fairly simple and straightforward to use. Overall, it’s easy to manage, it’s accurate and the final result is always impressive.”

Third New Hope Baptist Church Purchases HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression 2 Digital Console For New Campus

DETROIT, Michigan – Third New Hope Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan now featuring Sunday services at their three locations (Main, West and Northwest Campuses), recently purchased a HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Expression 2 console for its newest Northwest campus in Farmington Hills, which seats approximately 300 people. The church is known to offer a mixture of styles when it comes to its services, ranging from traditional hymns to contemporary Christian rock.

As the Lead Sound Engineer for the church, Derrick Holmes travels between all three campuses to manage the sound installations and train volunteers at each location. Having started his own live sound company for local bands called D&G Sound, he temporarily installed a Si Expression 3 console at the Farmington Hills campus. The church was so impressed with the console that it led to the purchase of its own Si Expression 2, which marks another step towards implementing the latest audiovisual technologies at the new campus.

“Based on my past experience as a live sound and studio engineer, I can confidently say that I’m impressed by the Si Expression Series,” said Holmes. “They’re user-friendly, and they hide well behind a screen. I can sit in the theater seat with an iPad and it feels great to control everything remotely. When I am on the board, the FaderGlowTM illumination makes the operation more intuitive than other boards, especially when using the console in dark theater environments.”

The Farmington Hills campus has a modern venue that is also used as a theater, so the Si Expression 2 was the perfect choice to highlight the acoustics of the venue, and to help volunteers transition out of their analog background.

“It’s easy to teach people with relatively little experience to use the board, because it’s so intuitively designed and it sounds great!” said Holmes. “Considering the price-point, you get high quality in sound and construction. The layout is very organized, so it wasn’t hard to transition people out of analog.”
