Martin Audio MLA Takes the Stage At KROQ Christmas Show

KROQ’S 25th Annual Almost Acoustic Christmas show settled in at the recently remodeled L.A. Forum this year after leaving its main home at the Gibson Amphitheater, torn down in September of 2013, and briefly occupying the Shrine Auditorium last year.

According to Meegan Holmes, Executive Account and Project Manager at Delicate Productions who has done the show for 17 years, the newly upgraded Forum turned out to be “an awesome experience. The remodel included acoustic treatments that made for a tight dead space. That was already an amazing step in the right direction for any audio vendor,” Meegan added, “because the treatment practically eliminated the cavernous sound of your average sports arena.”

Featuring an eclectic lineup including No Doubt, Smashing Pumpkins, Imagine Dragons, Weezer, Tears for Fears, Modest Mouse, System of A Down, Bush and Incubus among others, Delicate took advantage of the improved acoustics in the Forum with a Martin Audio MLA loudspeaker system.

The actual setup included 14 Martin Audio MLA with 2 MLD (downfill) cabinets a side as the main hangs; 16 MLA Compact per side for side hangs; 9 MLX ground-stacked subs per side, and 6 W8LM cabinets for front fill.

Two identical FOH setups each included an Avid Profile 48-channel console and a DigiCo SD11 console, while the two identical Monitor setups employed an Avid Profile 48 channel console with 10 Martin Audio LE700 monitor wedges (stage) and 2 LE700’s (cue) along with a Martin Audio WS218X drum sub cabinet.

Evaluating the show, Meegan concluded, “Since we moved to an arena, KROQ wanted to create a different concert experience for their fans from years past. There was a thrust on the stage that led out to a 16′ by 16′ deck in the middle of the floor, so we used the DSP in the system to steer the energy of the MLA mains away from the thrust, making the engineers’ work less stressful when their artists walked downstage.

“Everyone remarked on the quality of sound, particularly the subs, that we provided at FOH. We received compliments from our competitors that attended the show as well.”

Czech Republic’s Production 1 Makes the Move to HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi3000 Digital Console

Scraft_Production1PRAGUE, Czech Republic — Production 1 is one of the Czech Republic’s busiest live sound companies, providing audio, video, lighting and staging for high-profile events like the Old Punx Tour 2014 at the Masters of Rock Café in Zlín, the Pilsner Fest 2014 in Pizen, The Faktor Fest 2014 concert on Sokol Island and many more. Recently, Production 1 added a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi3000 digital live sound console to its growing live sound inventory.

“We provide sound for a wide range of music festivals, corporate events and everything in between, and needed to upgrade to a console that would have the flexibility to accommodate any live sound rental situation,” said Stanislav Benes, co-owner and sound engineer at Production 1. “We already had two Soundcraft Vi1 consoles, which we purchased because their sound was superior to what we had owned previously, and our positive experience with the Vi1 made the acquisition of the Vi3000 a logical step up.” Benes was also drawn to the Vi1’s space-saving form factor and attractive pricing. Production 1 purchased the Vi3000 from Czech HARMAN Professional distributor Audio Master.

The Soundcraft Vi3000 offers a host of high-end features including a new ergonomic design, 96 channels to mix, new internal SpiderCore 40-bit floating point DSP, Dante compatibility and much more. The Soundcraft Vi3000 features a control surface with four Vistonics II™ touchscreen interfaces, making it the only console in its class that can be used by two engineers at the same time. The Vi3000 provides extensive connectivity and routing options and offers a host of built-in Lexicon reverb/delays, dbx compression and effects.
Once Production 1 started putting the Vi3000 through its paces, Production 1 realized it was exceeding expectations. “For us, sound quality is paramount and the Vi3000 is absolutely superlative in this regard,” Benes noted. “The mic preamps are exceptionally clean and have a great deal of headroom.”

Not only has the Vi3000 expanded the services Production 1 can offer to its clients, it’s now one of the most-wanted pieces of gear in the company’s rental stable. “This console has become a favorite not just to me, but also to many of the sound engineers of the bands we work with and other rental companies that love to rent it,” Benes noted. He notes that although it has extremely sophisticated capabilities it’s easy to operate, especially for experienced pros like him and the Production 1 staff. “As soon as you put your hands on it you can tell this is a board that was designed by people who know what live sound engineers want and need.”

Production 1 looks forward to continued growth in 2015, thanks in no small part to its new Soundcraft Vi3000 console. “In fact, we already know what our next equipment purchase is going to be,” Benes said. “Another Vi3000!”

Tightrope Media Systems Bolsters Sales and Service Team with New Appointments

Company strengthens customer-first approach across broadcast, cable and digital signage

ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, January 7, 2014
Tightrope Media Systems’ unique identity as a leading solutions provider across the broadcast/cable and digital signage industries has propelled year-on-year business growth since its formation as a standalone company in 2001. Looking to further bolster the company’s sales and service team to support future growth across both businesses, Tightrope recently promoted five-year company veteran Kelli Smith to Director of Broadcast Sales, and hired Richard Turner as Digital Signage Regional Sales Manager.

KelliSmith Tightrope

Kelli, based in Raleigh, NC, now manages sales for ZEPLAY, Tightrope’s industry-leading choice for cost-efficient, multichannel instant replay servers; and the company’s Cablecast portfolio of server and automation products. Kelli will leverage her experience and relationships from her previous roles as Southeast U.S. sales manager and Carousel digital signage portfolio sales manager (east coast) to drive new business across emerging vertical markets, notably universities and hospitality businesses, including hotels and cruise ships.

“Tightrope is very well known in the digital signage space and in the local PEG broadcast community, and it’s my goal to build that same recognition across a new group of customers in verticals that traditionally haven’t used Tightrope broadcast solutions,” said Smith. “For example, although Tightrope has thousands of servers operating in the field today, ZEPLAY is the only one focused on live production. We’re working to make sure that prospective customers think of ZEPLAY first when it comes to slow motion instant replay servers.”

As Tightrope Media Systems is privately held, Kelli stresses the importance of responding to customer and market needs directly. “I’m looking forward to growing the existing relationships I’ve built, and developing new ones through our customer-first approach,” she added.

Richard Turner, based in Maryland, has more than 30 years in the professional AV, broadcast and IT markets working as an end user, consultant, engineer and content producer. Most recently, he worked in the government sector. This rich and varied experience allows Richard to further elevate the already sterling customer service at Tightrope.

Richard is looking forward to learning the Southeast territory and meeting Tightrope’s strong customer base across the region. “It’s always great to learn how our end users use digital signage to tell their stories,” said Turner. But, he also realizes that it’s a challenge or customers to sort out the differences among the many products on the market.

“My greatest goal is education and ensuring our customers get the most from our resources and products,” adds Turner. “It’s not just about technology; it’s about understanding the stories the customers want and need to tell, and about a team, like Tightrope, that stands behind their products and encourages innovation and creativity.”

About Tightrope Media Systems

Three Byte Intermedia Supports James Turrell Retrospective at National Gallery of Australia with Advanced Lighting Control Systems

2014-12-03 16.19.56American artist James Turrell’s new retrospective at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra includes projections, holograms, drawings, prints and photographs as well as 10 light installations, two featuring advanced lighting control systems created by Three Bye Intermedia, Inc, a studio focusing on interactive AV solutions.

“James Turrell: A Retrospective,” which runs from December 13-June 8, 2015, follows three retrospectives in Houston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Guggenheim in New York. Acclaimed as a leader in global contemporary light art, Turrell has told visitors to his shows, “I put you in a situation where you feel the physicality of light.”

That’s certainly true of the installations, “Bindu Shards,” part of Turrell’s Perceptual Cells series, and “Virtuality Squared,” from his Ganzfeld series. “Bindu Shards” has been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, along with five other major Turrell works.

“Bindu Shards” is designed to induce the drifting off state of mind that occurs in the early stages of meditation. A one-person sensory experience, it requires the viewer to ride a roller bed into a sphere-shaped structure, 12 feet in diameter, reminiscent of an MRI machine. The viewer wears headphones and looks up into a white hemisphere. The sphere is then illuminated with color- changing, pulsating LED lights.

“Three Byte software executes a program of binaural audio streams that induce beating between the left and right sides of the stereo headphones,” says Olaaf Rossi, Three Byte’s project manager. “It is absolutely critical that the lights and sound be generated from the same timing source – a feature that no existing system could support. We spent months developing the software to ensure that the lights are precisely timed to strobe synchronously with the audio beats, which are extremely important to the intensity of the perceived experience.”

Different programs, lasting between 11 and 37 minutes, alternate frequencies that emulate the neural oscillations occurring during different periods of the human sleep cycle. Although the experience is unique to each viewer and can be unsettling to some, most report it as being meditative allowing them to lose their sense of time and space.

“Virtuality Squared” replicates a whiteout phenomenon in which viewers experience a complete loss of depth perception. It features an inclined floor, precisely-constructed apertures and LED lights. What appears at first to be a flat projection is, in fact, a big room that engulfs viewers in a seemingly unending expanse of color. As the color shifts, perception compensates and static light is suddenly not static at all.

“Three Byte’s special-purpose lighting control software was developed specifically for James to allow him and his studio to easily experiment with new effects and experiences in every installation, each of which is unique to the location,” explains Rossi. “Our software supports timeline-based, 16-bit DMX control for up to 8 universes with particular attention to insert/edit capability along with increased low-light level precision controls and a custom tactile lighting control board.”
