L-ACOUSTICS Sonically Unites Woodstream Church

Woodstream Church's new ARCS WIFO and SB18m arrays flown in an LCR configuration

RCI Systems utilizes SOUNDVISION to create a powerful and uniform system based on ARCS “WIFO” and XT Series enclosures

BOWIE, Maryland — With its high-energy praise team backed by a full band and choir, Woodstream Church’s musical ministry is a blessing for those in its sanctuary every Sunday – especially now that a full L-ACOUSTICS amplifier and loudspeaker system has been installed.

Prior to the recent system retrofit, the Independent Fundamental Baptist house of worship in Bowie, Maryland suffered from uneven coverage with sound getting lost at the edges of the room and under the balcony.

To breathe new life into the sanctuary, the church called upon Beltsville-based AV systems integrator RCI Systems, which turned to L-ACOUSTICS’ acoustical simulation software, SOUNDVISION, to create a solution. According to RCI designer Bob Capotosto (CTS), the ideal remedy predicted was achieved with a combination of the manufacturer’s ARCS “WIFO” – WIDE and FOCUS – and coaxial XT product ranges. “SOUNDVISION gives us an extremely accurate picture of what we’ll need in terms of components to get a complex project like this successfully completed, and WIFO and XT were right for the job,” he says.

Coaxial 8XTi and 5XT enclosures serve as underbalcony fills for the acoustically shadowed areas

Today, the sanctuary’s main system utilizes an LCR arrangement of three arrays each comprised of two SB18m subs, two ARCS WIDE and two ARCS FOCUS enclosures. Ten compact 8XTi individually spread out just under the lip of the balcony deliver blanketed audio coverage to the rear sanctuary seats, while a single ultra-compact 5XT at each far edge of the underbalcony ensures optimum coverage to even the furthest corner seating areas. The entire loudspeaker system is powered and processed by a total of five LA8 amplified controllers.

Capotosto notes that the L-ACOUSTICS WIFO system, in particular, was ideal in that it is remarkably lightweight for its power, which minimized the amount of additional steel bracing required for the new hang points in the sanctuary’s ceiling. He also cites the tight directivity patterns and full range performance of the arrays as instrumental in being the right choice for the tall, fan-shaped space.

“Plus, the sound is amazing,” adds Capotosto, who points out that RCI has long had the ARCS WIFO solution in its rental inventory. “All of the coverage and intelligibility issues that the church had been experiencing are now gone. And the WIFO solution was affordable for the church, giving them all the power they need and with a substantial amount of headroom left to go. Also, the underbalcony area, which had been the hardest problem in the past to solve, is now completely addressed with coherent sound from the stage’s backline to the last row of the house. The church’s FOH engineer came to us and said we’ve made his job so much easier. That’s the best compliment you can get.”

Woodstream Church’s home on the web is found at www.woodstreamchurch.org, while RCI Systems can likewise be visited online at www.rcisound.com.

L-ACOUSTICS is a leading innovator and manufacturer of high-performance loudspeakers, amplifiers and signal processing devices for touring and installed sound markets. Known around the globe for pioneering and championing the modern line array loudspeaker concept with V-DOSC, the company has received numerous accolades for its K1, K2, KUDO, KARA, KIVA, ARCS, XT coaxial loudspeaker systems and SB line of subwoofer enclosures, all powered and processed with the LA4 and LA8 amplified controllers in fulfillment of a “total system approach.” Product distribution and customer service for North America is handled by L-ACOUSTICS’ subsidiary in Oxnard, California.

Digigram to Feature New MADI Option on LX-IP RAVENNA PCIe(R) Sound Card at IBC2014

Optical MADI Interface Facilitates and Accelerates Studios’ Shift From Synchronous Audio Toward More Flexible, Less Costly IP Audio

MONTBONNOT, France — Aug. 26, 2014 – At IBC2014, Digigram will highlight a new optical Multichannel Audio Digital Interface (MADI) option for the company’s LX-IP RAVENNA PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) sound card. With the MADI option on its LX-IP dual-port RAVENNA/AES67 sound card, Digigram provides connectivity that helps to ease the industry’s migration from synchronous audio (MADI) to IP audio (RAVENNA/AES67) in the studio environment.

“The industry’s move from costly proprietary equipment and standards toward commercial off-the-shelf, IT-based systems running common media-oriented IT protocols is not just inevitable, but well underway,” said Pascal Malgouyard, head of product marketing at Digigram. “While IP audio has revolutionized connections between the studio and other locations, it has not yet taken hold within the studio. However, the RAVENNA technology and new AES67 standard address key audio-over-IP (AoIP) interoperability issues, thus opening the door to IP audio in the studio environment. By adding an AES10 MADI option to our LX-IP RAVENNA sound card, we make it easy for users to accelerate their own transition from legacy synchronous digital audio to IP audio and, in turn, begin taking advantage of its many uses and cost benefits.”

The new MADI option facilitates a seamless shift to IP audio by supporting use of the LX-IP RAVENNA sound card in a synchronous audio environment to connect up to 64/64 I/O MADI channels from/to the host PC and from/to RAVENNA/AES67 AoIP equipment. Because the Digigram sound card includes an embedded routing matrix, users can make a direct connection — with no latency — between RAVENNA/AES67 streams and MADI channels, whether for monitoring purposes, redundancy, or simply creating a bridge between the MADI and IP audio realms.

Users realize the card’s valuable dual interface capabilities without any change to the familiar application used to manage the card. Control of the Digigram card is straightforward, thanks to its full compatibility with the industry-standard EMBER+ protocol.

The new Digigram card will be shipping by the end of 2014. In the meantime, it will be available for demonstrations on the Digigram IBC2014 stand (8.C51).

DPA Helps Ivan Rutherford Bring Broadway to Hong Kong

Internationally acclaimed artist Ivan Rutherford turned to DPA’s d:facto™ Vocal Microphone to help him give a truly emotional performance during a recent one-off show in Hong Kong.

The actor and singer, who has performed the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables over 2,000 times on Broadway, was looking for a microphone that could deliver exceptional sound quality and clarity through a large venue sound system. He also wanted a hand held microphone so that he could move freely on stage while he sang a series of Broadway hits dating from the 1930s to the present day. DPA’s d:facto Vocal Microphone fitted the bill perfectly. Rutherford used the microphone in a wireless configuration with a Sennheiser Wireless System, which made movement possible and allowed him to deliver a vocal performance that was memorable for the audience.

“I had never used a DPA microphone before and I was very pleased with the experience,” Rutherford says. “I was impressed with the intensity of the sound and the mobility it allowed onstage, which gave me great freedom to make unobstructed connections with my audience. I also enjoyed the feel and weight of the microphone in my hand, and found that it helped give me the necessary confidence for a one man performance. I would very much enjoy working with a DPA mic again.”

Rutherford’s show, entitled A Taste of Broadway, took place at the Academic Community Hall in Hong Kong. Mr. Clarence Chang, from Jazz World Live Series that organized the concert, says: “The only instrument on stage was a grand piano, which was also miked with DPA – a matched pair of d:dicate™ 4011A Cardiod Microphones in A-B configuration to capture the main piano signal and d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones in a stereo piano kit configuration to provide additional percussive effect from the hammers. This proved to be a very successful formula because the piano sounded fantastic – really crisp and lively, yet with all the body and warmth one would expect from a top of the range instrument.”

Ken Kimura, DPA’s General Manager for the APAC region, and Ricky Wan, from DPA’s Hong Kong distributor Digital Media Technology, were on hand to ensure the optimal microphone set up.

“The d:facto Vocal Microphone in a wireless configuration was a perfect match for Ivan Rutherford as it enabled him to move freely, while capturing every nuance of his voice,” Kimura says. “When you have a two hour show that only consists of a singer and grand piano, you really need that artist to be super talented and to have a great voice. Ivan Rutherford had both of these attributes in abundance and gave a fantastic performance.”

RCF Upgrades the Sound of the Sage Gateshead

The Sage Gateshead — an iconic multi-arts building in the north-east of England, which originally cost £70-million ($120-million) to construct — this year celebrates its tenth year.
To celebrate its landmark birthday the venue has upgraded the sound system in its 1700-capacity main Hall One with the installation of an RCF HDL 20-A line array by local British contractor Nitelites.
The move follows a period of careful evaluation by the facility’s Head of Technical Operations, Chris Durant and his team, during the many occasions the HDL20-A has been flown on a temporary basis to support the house system.
Home to Royal Northern Sinfonia, and host to a vast concert agenda that includes jazz, folk, country and rock the original beam steering system had rarely kept pace with the Sage’s promotional ambitions and so Nitelites found themselves increasingly hiring in their RCF TT+ and HDL rigs.
Eventually Nitelites’ MD, Jamie Moore proposed that a flown HDL 20-A be installed on a permanent basis — both to save the Sage Gateshead hire costs and to enable the system to be purpose tuned via a series of preset scenes accessed via a custom panel.
Said Nitelites co-director Andy Magee, “With HDL we were confident we could get even coverage around the building, whether for speech or classical. The system is so easy to deploy, quick to rig and fast to wire.”
The PA is designed to cover the ground floor, two balcony tiers and is split into 12 zones. Nitelites detailed 12 HDL20-A enclosures for each flank, rigged on a flying frame which will take up to 16 elements.
The rest of the complement comprises three HDL 20-A a side as portable ground stack on custom dollies, atop a SUB 8004. A separate stack features three SUB 8006s in a reverse cardioid pattern (one rear facing), with an HDL 10-A on top. Two HDL 10-As are also used for under-balcony infill and four as front lip fills. On the sides of the main hang for outfills are four discreet RCF TT08s.
Chris Durant believes that Nitelites’ attention to detail in tuning the system has enabled them to get an additional 30% from the system. “We’ve had pretty much every big system in here and our new in-house RCF house rigs sounds better because temporary systems have to be set up so quickly; this been tuned to within an inch of its life.”
He presented Nitelites with a matrix containing different performance scenarios for which gain structure presets were created. Via the DSP, Sage Gateshead can turn zones on and off in the PA at will. “It’s far more efficient than changing the angles of the boxes every time we needed a new configuration,” Durant says.
He notes, “The great thing about the HDL 20-A is that it goes down to 55Hz so for jazz and classical there are no subs at all. In fact the first time I heard it I thought our subs had been switched in by mistake.”
At the same time he highlights other advantages of HDL 20-A. “It’s also easy to groundstack and the position of the fly frame is mirrored on the subs so it’s easy to interlock; it’s convection cooled so there is no buzzing — which is vital in a critical room where a low noise floor is required. It’s also very efficient energy wise, and we don’t need to run extra power in.”
All of which should future-proof performance requirements for the foreseeable future. Summing up the Sage Gateshead installation, Chris Durant says, “We are now making engineers aware that they can leave their kit on the truck.”
RCF’s Northern sales manager Mick Butler adds that the system’s exposure to visiting sound engineers will be invaluable. “It really brings into focus the power of RCF’s pro touring range,” he says.
