Legendary Producer/Engineer Alan Parsons to Give Opening Keynote at AES137 in Los Angeles

AlanParsons

New York, NY, September 29, 2014 — On Thursday, October 9, 2014, the 137th Audio Engineering Society Convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles will feature the Opening Keynote address from Alan Parsons, the acclaimed engineer, musician, and record producer. The address will be part of the convention’s opening ceremonies, Thursday, October 9, 1:00pm – 2:00 pm (Room 403 AB). In his Keynote address, Mr. Parsons will provide his unique insights on the current and future direction of the music and recording industry from his singular perspective of success and experience throughout the history of popular music.

Parsons has been involved in the production of several legendary albums throughout his career. He was fortunate enough to work as assistant engineer on the final two albums by The Beatles, and after he qualified as a fully-fledged recording engineer, he went on to work with Paul McCartney, The Hollies and many others. But it was his contribution as engineer on Pink Floyd’s classic Dark Side of the Moon that really got him worldwide attention and earned him his first of many GRAMMY® nominations. That soon led to striking successes as a producer – notably with Pilot’s “Magic,” John Miles’ “Highfly” and Steve Harley’s “Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)”. He also produced the hugely successful Year of the Cat album with Al Stewart and two albums with American progressive rock band Ambrosia. With Eric Woolfson, Parsons co-founded The Alan Parsons Project, famous for its revolving group of studio musicians and vocalists and its platinum albums and singles, including “Games People Play” and “Eye in the Sky.”

Additionally, he developed The Art and Science of Sound Recording, a definitive collection of training videos presented by Parsons, which gives viewers his exclusive insider access to legendary musicians, producers and engineers and their award-winning recording techniques. A companion book (published by Hal Leonard) based on this acclaimed video series is being formally launched at AES137.

Alan has come full circle and is back in his role as producer and engineer, both at his own Santa Barbara studio and other studios internationally. In 2012, Alan produced an album called Grand Ukulele with virtuoso ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro. A collaboration with Steven Wilson as engineer and associate producer resulted in the album The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) in 2013, hailed as a major success and reaching Top 5 on the album charts in Germany.

AES Executive Director Bob Moses stated, “Alan Parsons has a massive influence on modern record production, audio engineering, mixing and other disciplines. We are honored to welcome him as our keynote speaker during our opening ceremonies.”

For information on how you can get your FREE Exhibits-Plus badge (pre-registration required), as well as further Registration, and Technical Program information, visit the AES137 webpage at http://www.aes.org/events/137/.

A New Kind of Record Label: Blend.io

Blend announces record label and distribution deal, giving musicians and fans more control over their music

NYC – Blend (http://blend.io), the premier music collaboration platform, has partnered with the distribution powerhouse The Orchard to offer its community of producers and musicians a digital distribution outlet via the official Blend.io label (https://blend.io/label)

Blend sees the addition of a record label as a natural progression of the expanding platform by providing everything a music producer needs in one place: inspiration, collaboration, record deals, and distribution. By partnering with The Orchard, a music distributor that amplifies reach and revenue across hundreds of digital, physical and mobile outlets around the world, the Blend label is able to deliver music through a proven infrastructure to every digital music outlet.

blend-logo-final

Blend has managed to democratize the music publishing process and puts more control in the hands of its artists. It’s easy to see which songs and remixes gain the most notoriety in the vibrant Blend community as Blend members vote for their favorite pieces and engage with the music of their preferred producers. When a song or remix reaches a certain level of votes, it has a good chance of being included in the label’s line-up. This way, the decision of which pieces makes it to publication is not up to one executive but is made by a vote of peers – a revolutionary new model for music distribution.

“We don’t want to be arbiters of taste,” said Kolundzija in a recent interview with Billboard Magazine. “We want to see what’s happening with the platform and if there’s activity around certain projects we want to give those projects a bigger stage and the label and distribution deal allows us to do that.”

The label (https://blend.io/label) will develop up and coming talent as well established artists who are interested in new and innovative ways to connect, engage and create with their fans. Apart from the instant audience on Blend, the label will support marketing and help the artists to monetize their work through distribution.

“We built the label arm to further inspire and empower our users and artists. We continue to see how our platform encourages personal connection as well as workflow and creativity, and with our new capabilities we’ll be able to further foster these relationships and give even more back to the community,” adds Guy Licata, Blend Label Manager.

Blackmagic Design Announces ATEM Switcher Update 6.1

Fremont, CA – October 2, 2014 - Blackmagic Design today announced the release of ATEM Switcher Update 6.1 software which includes new features for Camera Control such as copying of color settings across cameras, white balance display and synchronized fading of audio and video using Fade to Black. ATEM Switcher Update 6.1 is available now for download free of charge for all existing ATEM Switcher customers from the Blackmagic Design support page on the website.

Blackmagic Designs award winning ATEM range of live production switchers include full camera control when used with the new Blackmagic Studio Camera or Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K models. These cameras are fully controlled via the SDI or optical fiber output connection that links the output of the ATEM switcher to the camera. Normally this connection allows camera operators to see program video from the switcher, but with the ATEM open standard SDI protocol, full camera control, tally and talkback is also included all in the same link.

Customers have been extremely happy with this camera control feature, and have used the lens control and built in color correction to make live video production dramatically easier as well as more creative. However customers have also been feeding back to Blackmagic Design some great ideas for improvements to the camera control and these updates have been included in this ATEM Switcher Update 6.1.The new ATEM Switcher Update 6.1 software includes an exciting new copy and paste function which allows color correction settings to be copied across camera controllers, either individually or to all cameras without affecting iris, focus, coarse and pedestal settings. Now camera color correction settings can be quickly and easily copied for a consistent and unified color look which is critical in a fast paced live production environment.

An adjustable display of white balance temperature has also been added to Camera Control, giving greater control over the color temperature of the camera and making it easy to ensure they are all matched for consistent program output. This new feature is conveniently located for ease of use adjacent to the shutter and gain control. Customers can also now fade audio and video together using audio follow video (AFV) and selecting Fade to Black button, making it easy for a single user to switch from a program, to end a recording or move to a commercial break.

“The response to Camera Control in the ATEM switcher software panel has been amazing, people have really been able to take advantage of directly controlling camera color using the ATEM switcher software”, said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Customers have given us some great suggestions so we have prioritised these and are continuously releasing updates with these exciting new features. Copy and paste for camera control set up as well as white balance temperature adjustment make it incredibly quick and easy for our customers to set up multiple cameras for live production and achieve amazing image consistency.”

DVIGear Launches DisplayPort Cables Supporting 4K / 60Hz

Expands Line of High Performance Copper Cables

Marietta, Georgia    October 2, 2014  –  DVIGear, a leading manufacturer of digital connectivity products, has announced the introduction and immediate availability of High Resolution™ DisplayPort Copper Cables.  These cables are designed to transport DisplayPort signals with bit rates up to 21.6 Gbps. over cable lengths of up to 15 meters (~ 50 ft.).  These cables support uncompressed DisplayPort resolutions up to 4096×2160 / 60 Hz.
DVIGear HR™ DisplayPort Copper CablesEngineered to Support Ultra High Resolutions at Long Distances

Long distance transport of high resolution DisplayPort signals over copper cables must overcome several challenges, such as insertion loss, differential skew and jitter.  Insertion loss is caused by cable capacitance, which acts as a low-pass filter, blocking higher frequency signal components from passing.  Skew occurs when the differential DisplayPort signals get delayed and become out of phase as they pass over a long cable.  Both factors contribute to increased digital jitter, which degrades the performance of the cable.  This jitter becomes more severe with higher resolutions, higher bit rates and longer cable distances.  Conventional cables that support lower resolutions at short distances are often unable to support the data rates required by higher resolutions at longer distances.  The resulting video can be disrupted by visual artifacts or may not be visible at all.

To overcome these challenges, DVIGear’s HR™ Series DisplayPort Cables are constructed using heavy gauge 24AWG copper wires that provide superior ruggedness and durability.  The heavier wire gauge has increased cross-sectional cable area, as well as decreased capacitance and lower differential skew, which allows high speed signals to pass with minimal jitter.  These features enable cable lengths of up to 15 meters (~ 50 ft.) with full compliance with DisplayPort 1.2 signal parameters.

Comprehensive Line of HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort Copper Cables

For many years, system integrators, designers and consultants across the globe have trusted DVIGear’s line of copper cables thanks to their unsurpassed performance and reliability.  This comprehensive line supports high resolution HDMI, Single-Link DVI, Dual-Link DVI, and DisplayPort signals over long distances.  When coupled with DVIGear’s Active Cable Extender (ACE™) unit, the Super High Resolution (SHR™) Series HDMI, DVI, and DVI-DL cables support cable lengths up to 60 meters (~ 200 ft.).  All these cables are available in a wide range of lengths for immediate delivery.

Compass Bible Church Praises DPA Microphones

Company’s d:vote™ 4099 Instrument and d:fine™ Headset Microphones minimize EQ efforts during worship and provide clear audio for online congregation

DPA Microphones_Compass BibleALISO VIEJO, CA, OCTOBER 2, 2014Compass Bible Church serves its active congregation of 3,000 people almost every day of the week with bible study groups, Sunday school and several mid-week and weekend services. In order to accommodate this busy schedule, the church’s audio staff needs reliable audio equipment, such as the DPA Microphones’ d:vote™ 4099 Instrument and d:fine™ Headset Microphones. With this arrangement, the team can ensure that each sermon is delivered clearly to both the congregation and the extended community, which includes a live online stream through Live Stream as well as listeners to one of the hundreds of Focal Point Radio stations.

Supplied by CCI Solution, a HOW integrator based in Washington, the d:vote 4099s provide the perfect mount to properly close-mic the violin and drum kit used during worship, while the d:fine is the ideal audio solution for the lead and associate pastors. Selected by Jon Lillie, Audio/Visual/Lighting Director at Compass Bible Church, on recommendation by fellow church engineers, the mics have become a staple at the church. The d:votes are especially favored as their unique, lightweight body and mounting options, which are available for almost all acoustic and woodwind instruments, continuously fit the needs of the Compass Bible worship band.

DPA Microphones_Compass Bible 2“With the mounting system, it’s so easy to use the d:vote 4099 for the violin as the mic always ends up right where I want it,” says Jon. “I also use the d:vote 4099 to mic the drum kit because it is very responsive. It works really well with the toms and doesn’t pick up too much of the overheads. What it does pick up really accents the sound nicely and the EQ response is perfect for the violin.”

Jon’s fondness for the d:vote 4099s led to the church’s purchase of a d:fine Headset Mic for Lead Pastor Mike Fabarez. The reputation of the quality and comfort of the d:fines soon spread and it wasn’t long before every pastor at Compass Bible was using the mics. This was also ideal for Jon who enjoys ease-of-setup and flat response of the mics compared to his previous solutions.

DPA Microphones_Compass Bible 3“The mics are high-quality and don’t require a lot of gain, so their feedback resistance is great,” adds Jon. “When I listen to the individual on the microphone, I find that the EQ response is a lot flatter, which makes it sound as though the pastors are speaking face-to-face to each member of the congregation. I also like that the d:fine is so light and comfortable; people forget they are wearing them.”

In the future, Jon hopes to continue to add to the church’s inventory of DPA products, with the company’s podium microphone next on his wish list.

Compass Bible Church, a non-denominational organization, was established in 2006 with a contemporary worship style led by Senior Pastor Mike Fabarez. The church offers a variety of programs from traditional missions and Sunday school offered to adolescents and adults, in addition to modern worship groups such as Navigating Motherhood and Compass Singles 40+ Ministries.

Cobalt Digital’s Quint-Split Video Processor for openGear Takes Home ‘Best of Show Award’ at IBC 2014

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS — The 9970-QS Quint-Split Video Processor for openGear® manufactured by Cobalt Digital, is the recipient of one of the industry’s most prestigious technology honours, NewBay Media’s Best of Show Award, presented at the 2014 IBC Show in Amsterdam by TV Technology Europe magazine.

NewBay Media’s Best of Show Awards recognise outstanding new products exhibited at the IBC2014. Entries were evaluated by panels of professional users and editors and selected based on innovation, feature set, cost efficiency and performance in serving the industry. Only a handful of products were chosen from among dozens of entries. Cobalt’s 9970-QS Quint-5plit card was singled out because it provides a much-needed monitoring solution in the openGear platform that allows a customer to view multiple video feeds on a single monitor. With both SDI and HDMI outputs a user has the ability to feed the monitoring output into a plant router, or go directly into a consumer monitor. By accepting both composite and digital inputs, the 9970 has a versatility for both analogue and digital environments. Each video feed is represented by a “PiP” (Picture in Picture) that can be customised for size and position on the monitor. Other elements of the signal like audio levels, timecode, video format, and video source based on router integration, can be displayed for each individual source being monitored. Each PiP also has three GPI associated with it that can be used to control two tallies and one border for visual cues to operators. Presets can be used to recall layout changes making setting-up before shows quick and easy. The 9970-QS was developed with the end-user in mind, providing ease of set-up, with intuitive controls via custom GUI.

“We are enormously proud of our Best of Show recipients,” says TV Technology Europe Publisher Steve Connolly. “Recognition with an award at the IBC Show from NewBay Media’s Broadcast & Video Group is a strong vote of confidence and admiration from our leading industry publications.”

“Bringing practical products to market that help our customers become more efficient and productive is quite satisfying on its own merit, but being recognised by industry experts for innovation is a bonus indeed,” commented Chris Shaw, Cobalt’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “We are delighted to accept another award and will continue our legacy of developing solutions that result from customer feedback. It’s a win-win formula for success all-around!”
