With special features like a power amplifier and plenty of virtual effects on the FX version, the CLS-2 Series is ideal for such applications as point-of-sale digital displays or multi-media shows. In addition Klein + Hummel is also debuting the CLS-3 Series column loudspeakers for wall-mounting in locations where high ceilings or the architectural or visual design limits speaker placement for distributed public address or background music applications. ARCHIVE: Adtec’s Approach

mediaHub-HDAs the show madness started easing up, I had time for a nice chat with the always cheery Ron Johnson, director of sales and marketing for Adtec Digital (N6825) this afternoon. After regaling me for a while with tales from the early days of digital signage (“we called our product 13 years ago a multimedia player device, but it was digital signage back before most people knew that term,” Ron said), he spoke with pride about a cool little device from Adtec called mediaHUB HD–a 1080i and 720p encoder that made its InfoComm debut this week.

Ron was particularly pleased that the mediaHUB, checking in at a price point around $12,000, is more than a real-time encoder. It also has a hard drive and can play the role of a scheduling and management server, among other chores. more…

ARCHIVE: A New Cable Standard on the Horizon

The Luxtera (C1744) booth was a mob scene. Back in January, at CES, the company annouced its DisplayPort optical active interconnect long-reach cable for home and digital signage applications. At the core of the cable is Silicon CMOS Photonic technology—a chip the size of postage stamp. The company had a very compelling presentation, comparing the one Display Port cable to the large piles of the VGA, DVI, and HDMI cables. Size (smaller in this case) really does matter. more…

ARCHIVE: LG’s Prototypes

Lots going on at LG‘s booth (N5941), but I liked the prototypes best. Cool, sort of out-of-the-box LCD displays that may, or may not, have useful applications in the world of digital signage are on display at the booth. Among them:

*LG’s “Stretch Screen” Flatiron display for an ultra-wide-screen look. It has a fancy model number, but company officials insist “Stretch” is name enough. Check it out, and you’ll see what they mean. more…

ARCHIVE: Planar Plasma Alternative

Planar Clarity x100HDPlanar Systems (formerly Clarity) booth (N6332) is showing its rear-projection alternatives to those 103in. plasma giants. The Clarity x100HD is a 100in. HD DLP flush-mount rear-projection display is a unit designed with conference rooms in mind. You really wouldn’t know it was a rear-projection system with the flush-mount design, which could be a little more problematic of a build for older rooms. Like other rear-projection system in the Planar line, the display is serviceable from the front. The x100 HD will be shipping in Q4. more…

Rise Vision Achieving the Content Goal

Over at the Rise Vision booth (N7341), fellow Contributing Editor Bennett Liles and I talked digital signage shop with VP Ryan Cahoy. The digital signage area in the North Hall is staggering—and more than a little confusing to some.

Cahoy says what it comes down to is achieving the content goal. That is, content is in an age where it is expected to be continually be updated. Cahoy says that often times users and integrators get hung up on the display systems, when really they should be focusing on content development and deployment. When you buy a computer, that system is already almost obsolete; the same is true of displays. Although users are always going to want display their content at the best quality possible, Cahoy says it’s a moot point if the content is stale. Which is why he points to Rise Vision’s Display Network web-based monitoring system. more…

World’s Biggest Mounts

Premier Mounts TWM 103The other day, I wrote about the start of the proliferation of Panasonic‘s giant 103-in. Plasma displays. Today, I learned how they mount those suckers. It’s hard to miss, actually, if you visit the Premier Mounts booth (C2411). They have a huge suspended ceiling mount (the SCM-103 model) hanging over the booth from the Convention Center’s rafters, and they have a huge wall mount (the TWM-103 model) on the side of the booth labeled, to no one’s surprise, “the world’s largest tilt wall mount.”

Both are used to hang Panasonic jumbos, including the mall space examples in New Jersey and New York that I mentioned the other day. Considering those giant mounts are a niche application usable currently with only one kind of giant screen, though, I was curious how and why the product might be profitable for a company like Premier. more…

X2O Media has a Different Angle on Digital Signage

x20xpresenter.jpgX2O Media gave me a great demo of their Xpresenter Player and server system for digital signage. The content creation is PowerPoint based but you certainly wouldn’t know that by just looking at it. In fact, there is an even simpler mode that uses templates to create some pretty CNN-like signage displays. Touch screens can be designed too and I was show one that has a lot of different possible applications. They sure could use a system like the one X2O Media showed me just to get people from one place to another here in the exhibit halls. Maybe we’ll see something like that next year. A system that actually worked from any entrance to get people quickly to the booth they want would be the greatest sales trick ever.

Pantel in the Shower

Pantel water-proof displayDespite having a lousy position in North Hall (N7453), Pantel is still stopping passersby. The company’s weather-proof panels are only a year in production, so Pantel is a little less well-known. But that’s about to change.

It’s all about the water when you’re in the company’s miniscule booth (well, water and the live music funneling over from stage just yonder; it makes the water seem even flashier). The water that’s being sprayed on the company’s displays is a slick graphic, hence the stopping. And the water being sprayed on the mirror-like unit? That’s a water-proof display unit that’s going into Hard Rock Hotel showers. more…

ChyTV keeps advancing

ChyTV HD 150Chyron, known best as the broadcast industry’s standard for on-screen graphics, has developed over the last five years a strong foothold in the digital signage space. The ChyTV products are designed for basic applications that often involve only a single screen — think of a deli with a busy lunch line, entertaining its customers with a live television feed while trying to promote specials (via graphics around the border).

The focus of the ChyTV line has not changed much, except that it’s participated in the industry’s general move toward HD. The new ChyTV HD 150, for instance, accepts an SD video feed on the input and incorporates digital signage graphics on the output and upscales the aggregate signal to 720p or 1080i/p. It also plays clips via its 160GB hard drive. more…
