John Meyer’s Been Busy

During my visit to the Meyer Sound booth (5961), it quickly became apparant to me that Meyer’s legendary co-founder and chief, John Meyer, remains as busy as ever creating “his babies,” as marketing chief Kasi Miller described new speakers to me. Those babies in question include new line array speaker products and cinema speaker products that basically are coming to life simply because Meyer retains his passion for his industry and for inventing them.

A couple of them are so new, more…

JBL’s Pattern Control

afe85ab9-b4cc-4ff3-a0b0-88009e15781d.jpgI’m always fascinated to hear about the unique development histories of various products, I learned the decade-long background today of JBL’s new CBT Series Line Array Columns. Chatting with Rick Kamlet, Senior Director of Commercial Installed Sound for JBL, I found out the new series, personified by the CBT 50LA (50cm high compact column relying on a line of eight 2-in. drivers), CBT 100LA (100cm high with 16 2-in. drivers), and CBT 70J speakers (two-way coaxial line array with 16 soft dome tweeters and four 5-in. woofers that is 70cm high) on display at the JBL booth was 10 years in the making. The technology is based on the research of former JBL and longtime audio engineer Don Keele, an inventor of constant directivity loudspeaker horns, who started publishing papers on the concept back in 2000, when he was still with JBL. more…

Wireless Focus at Sennheiser

Lots going on, as usual, from Sennheiser at InfoComm this week. Although the company’s introduction of K-array lightweight speaker technology was a new venture in the speaker category, and upgrades of two wireless mic systems and the introduction of a third (making the company a major player in both the RF and infrared categories) were among its biggest newsmakers today, I was most taken with the company’s ongoing education and service focus. more…

InfoComm Day 2

Day Two at InfoComm 09 and the emerging theme is becoming clear: telepresense. Depending upon whom you talk to, telepresence is either the logical extension of video conferencing or a completely unique proposition unto itself. What sets it apart is the sense of immersiveness that its purveyors—a growing chunk of companies huddled mainly in the 3000 series of alleyways in the convention center—achieve by use of HD, multichannel audio, and staging the rooms in which telepresence conversations take place in such a way as to give the impression that the participants are in the same room with each other. The main players include Glowpoint, Tandberg, Polycom, LifeSize Communications, Teliris, and Cisco, the IT giant that is promoting its own proprietary approach to the telepresence. more…

Anniversary

dscn1759.JPGWireworks is having a 35th birthday. So is Ashly Audio. Birthday sounds good for 35. But what if you’re 75? Atlas Sound is going with anniversary. Actually they’re not going with anything, Andy Dixon just mentioned it on the booth, just as he mentioned that the booth next door (IED) was also now an Atlas sibling in the MiTek family.

More to the point, when you have a 75-year track record, you have to keep moving and changing. For Atlas Sound that lately means focusing the Atlas brand beyond sound. For example, while the core Atlas products including speaker and amps continue apace, if you had never been to an Atlas booth in past 75 years, you might not think you were at a speaker company. You would notice the new power products: conditioners, sequencers, supressors, etc. more…
